Conflict in the Middle East

What are the people "Marching" in London every Saturday realistically hoping to achieve?

It won't change UK government policy. It won't result in a ceasefire in Gaza. It won't magically resolve the situation in Palestine.

Same as all the other big marches - War in Iraq etc. Changed nothing.

The mother of a Hamas terrorist interviewed on Sky news says she is proud of her son and most in Gaza support what Hamas are doing 🙄she said Hamas are heroes to them. She then went on about religion. Just been shown on Sky . Careful what you support

Maybe that's why the US aren't intervening.

The mother of a terrorist is hardly representative of a nation. Bit like expecting Nigel Farage to be the mouthpiece of Britain.

noblegiraffe · 09/11/2023 21:59

So on the one hand Israel's actions brought about Hamas and their continued actions in Palestine are creating new members of Hamas daily and yet on the other hand it should be entirely disbelieved that anyone in Gaza supports Hamas at all?

MableT · 09/11/2023 22:03

I've just been reading that some students, attending marches didn't even know Hamas massacre had occurred. The naivety and ignorance of youth. Reading this board, I not surprised where they get it from.

I totally agree

Xenia · 09/11/2023 22:10

It is why talking about it is important, even if the people to whom you talk completely disagree and think you are a liar. i am very glad MN is allowing comment on this topic from those of us who support Israel, neutral posters and pro Palestinian ones. It is always a good idea to hear and be open to other views.

You know, even though I (think I ... based on previous posts) diametrically disagree with you on substance: I fully agree with you on it being great that we can speak about the situation** on here!

** did you know that both Israelis and Palestinians, literally, just call it "the Situation"?

ketchup07070 · 09/11/2023 22:16

Well said @Xenia

Coffeepants · 09/11/2023 22:17

You have so well what I struggled to articulate! Could not agree more.

Parkingt111 · 09/11/2023 22:20

Well @Xenia I didn't think we would ever agree on anything but here is a start 😊

This article has views of different people who are planning on attending the march on Saturday and why. And no they are not hate marches

The majority are marching on Instagram/Vibe politics, it is full of people who think in black and white and think they are supporting an underdog because of bigotry of low expectations.

They have spent the last decade apparently seeing every hidden dog whistle of being reminiscence of 1930's Germany in some statement whilst making Stormfront blush, it is just Vibe politics

@HaveALaff then report them. I always find Mumsnet really helpful in that respect.
Perhaps rather than conspiracy theories it's just bedtime. I normally go around this time. Not a troll or a bot. Just tired :)

I am glad we can all chat too @Xenia. I don't agree with many things on here but I am happy to consider things and be educated. I don't profess to know it all. It's the frothers that get on my norks. I hoped we had moved on from that short sighted stance. We need to think.... what next? Especially in light of positive (tiny) steps towards a pause.

I really can't believe your thinking on this. Its an insult to the victims of 7 October. Just stop it now.

Of course it's not insulting the victims. I'm sorry you are wounded but there is a lot of truth in what Coffeepants said. Netanyahu has always been opposed to a Palestinian sovereignty and has played a dangerous game by enabling funding to Hamas in order to keep division in the Gaza Strip and West Bank. Now it's blown up in his face, but at the same time it's given him the perfect opportunity to fulfill his own end game of obliterating Palestine.

Source? This seems unlikely.

ScribblingPixie · 09/11/2023 23:26

It's the headline story - with video - on the Mail website.

DevonWindyWeather · 09/11/2023 23:50

Someone has posted video recordings of some of what happened to people at the festival and terrorist attacks on Israel. I stupidly watched it, the level of depravity is obscene. People have been denying the rapes of women and video shows women dragged around bleeding from behind its frankly disgusting that people deny it happened. Families talking about the last moments of their children at the music festival. How can people marching not know about 7th October

Oh I feel for you. I inadvertently watched the poor Thai farmer video. I didn't realise it was that one until I saw the implement appear. I felt physically sick for a few hours, not to mention the shock at the barbarity.

MableT · 09/11/2023 23:54

Should add, I cut off the video efore the heinous final act but it had been posted on Twitter and automatically started playing.

I saw some interviews with young British students who were on one of the pro Palestine marches.

When asked about they thought about the Hamas attacks on Israel on the 7th of October…they said there hadn’t been any.

Fuck wits. And useful idiots.

And don't forget that ordinary Palestinians were spitting on the bodies of the raped and murdered women in gaza

I totally agree

Do you think the two of them have learned anything since they appeared on TV yesterday?

( In the 1960s a student told me she belonged to Lewisham Anarchists. She went down in my estimation. Maybe I was horribly judgemental, and wrong.)

Reallifelurker · 10/11/2023 08:56

Not sure I’d take take anything written in The Daily Fail all that seriously.

"Source? This seems unlikely"

This is an interesting comment that clearly demonstrates how this topic is one of convictions or entrenched beliefs on both sides.

It is simply "I am right and you are wrong" and if those convictions are countered with facts and evidence then those facts / evidence are either dismissed as fake or simply ignored and countered with whataboutery.

There is no debate or rational discussion here on both sides which is why the majority see fault on both sides and take a neutral or disinterested stance. The only thing that would change this if the topic was forced into disrupting their daily lives such as Stop Oil are doing.

This underlines my point about convictions or entrenched beliefs that when countered with facts and evidence it is dismissed as fake.

Would it make any difference to your views or beliefs if the source was LBC rather than the Daily Mail - I doubt it.
