C'mon girls, this is the year. We will form a circle and concentrate hard on diffment.

Meanwhile, David and Jenson have popped the corks and are pouring out the Bellinis. Truckle of stilton anyone?

OP posts:

Excellent news Lyra. and POAS!

Ed I'm trying to get pregnant for a similar reason; we've been under threat of redundancy for about a year, but there is no way the fuckers would get rid of me with a big fat baby bump! They are a human rights organisation after all and that would not go down well in the ET me thinks...

Oh, 2WWOOFL = 2 week wait of obsessive fucking lunacy or sumink like that.

Eadwacer · 18/01/2010 14:54

Oh poos are always good signs. When the waste disposal unit is functioning correctly all else within must also be at its best. POAS I would. Clearly there's no room for the poo in there anymore!

twinkle - AHA! Way I see it, we've been judged on our WOMANHOOD for centuries. Might as well use it as a weapon when the chance arises.

Oh Lawks. The lunacy biz sounds very likely in my case. Already I'm googling how pregnant I might potentially look at various upcoming social events, and wondering whether a) to swathe self in that lovely vintage 80s dress I've got or b) wear my tight DVF wrap-dress knock-off and let everyone know.

Bear in mind people that I haven't actually shagged anyone during this cycle (but the poor man is going to get the shock of his life Wednesday morning) so it's all pure day-dreaming.

Bessie123 · 18/01/2010 14:55

Yessss, I've filed my tax return. Phew.

CurlyCasper · 18/01/2010 16:01

Cause that's just what you needed to be doing on such a momentous day bessie!

Oh, for the love of the wee man, we have another writer on the thread. And she's already outed herself as a pedant - get in! Where's scorps when you need her?

Bessie123 · 18/01/2010 16:10

I reckon this is Scorpette's month for an updiff. Yeah.

Caspar it's one more thing to celebrate - no more cold sweats in the middle of the night because I still haven't done it and the deadline's approaching...

Eadwacer · 18/01/2010 16:11

Plus, Bess, you need no longer fear opening the hall cupboard to retrieve the vaccuum cleaner, and finding Moira Stuart sitting there, all treacly vowels and ghastly silver Newsreader jewellery.

Confabs!

Bessie123 · 18/01/2010 16:24

yeah right, like I ever use the vaccuum cleaner. Heh.

CurlyCasper · 18/01/2010 16:27

My dog lives in the cupboard under the stairs, I'd like to see Moira try to get in there...

Bessie123 · 18/01/2010 16:34

We don't have a cupboard under our stairs but she is welcome to try to fit into the boiler cupboard, with its spider webs and no floor boards.

iggypiggy · 18/01/2010 16:37

eadie you sound like you've had moira in your cupboard before.. I hate it when that happens...

Ocarina · 18/01/2010 17:02

Glad the news is good Lyra, hope the next treatment's successful.

Ed I'm intrigued, how does one do a PhD in creative writing? Does it mean writing a novel, or can you write about creative writing? And if so how's that different to studying literature?

Personally I have no idea how anyone finds the motivation to do PhDs in things that are all books and ideas rather than things you put in test tubes. Trying to write essays was bad enough! Or maybe that's just cos I'm a scientist and so not designed to do artsy subjects.

iggypiggy · 18/01/2010 17:11

lyra also wanted to say - that is good news.

CD24... interesting

Ed does you do your PhD at a uni in lundun den?

Eadwacer · 18/01/2010 17:19

Ocarina you write a novel and then a thesis about your novel, and the processes by which you arrived at your particular narrative .... if you read to the end of that sentence without falling asleep then do please have a splish-splash of this excellent quality gin.

I wish I WERE doing something sciencey. at least there'd be a right or wrong as opposed to a discussion about whether or not my writing is entirely to people's tastes....

iggy um. If I answer that question I am frightened I will OUT MYSELF on Mumsnet and although I doubt any friends of mine are here, one never knows....

(Why is she asking, wonders Eadwacer fretfully, looking charmingly peturbed....)

iggypiggy · 18/01/2010 17:22

Ed actually I thought that after I posted... I only ask cos you might be where I am... Obv will not mention where I am for same reason as you...

Ocarina · 18/01/2010 17:25

You think there's right and wrong answers in science?! (although I see what you mean) Sounds like an interesting process - do you plan to publish the novel too? Or indeed have you already?

Eadwacer · 18/01/2010 17:25

Oooo iggy are you doing PhD creative writing???!!! Because if so we perhaps should out ourselves to each other, in a discreet manner. does this thread have a private room? A SNUG, if you will?!

Medee · 18/01/2010 17:25
CurlyCasper · 18/01/2010 17:27

ed you must find a way to answer iggy's question. When she and I found our paths crossed in the real world, we both got diffed within weeks. (But I'm not where you two are )

Eadwacer · 18/01/2010 17:28

Ocarina - oh god, that's just blind ignorance on my part: I like to think of science experiments going like this -

Lab Coat 1: If this happens, does it mean that is true?

Lab Coat 2: Yeah, pretty much. Wanna try?

Lab Coat 1: all right then. Oh look, this did happen.

Lab Coat 2: Ace. So that's true. Want a beer?

and so on. Please don't spoil it.

My novel is going to be published like I'm going to start wearing 7-for-all-Mankind skinny jeans in Kate Moss grey: WE CAN ALL HOPE.

iggypiggy · 18/01/2010 17:28

Ed nah... I iz sciencey innit but am not an academic either way...

as you mention it - we does have the other place tho

I know someone wot haz just finished a PhD in Eng Lit tho

Eadwacer · 18/01/2010 17:30

Curly - Lumme, really?! Is iggy magic? Is she omnipresent? I'm a bit scared. I'm also scared about my earnest posts on other threads being mocked. But not nearly as scared as being spotted by my sister, having complained about her at some length.

Oh dear this'll teach me to write posts in precisely the same way I speak and email!

gngngngn.

CurlyCasper · 18/01/2010 17:30

Oooh talk of reopening the door to the "other place" might almost keep me at my PC... But it's time to go home and eat lamb. Nom, nom

Eadwacer · 18/01/2010 17:32

Oh 'kay, less peturbed. Yes I am at a London uni - but since I never leave my study unless it's because my GP has pointed out that I am so sunlight deprived I have a vitamin D deficiency (this is true, by the way), I won't have met any other PhDers. Especially if they're actually doing a PROPER one as opposed to just sitting making shit up for 4 years...

Ocarina · 18/01/2010 17:37

The beer bit's true..... Sunlight deprivation = proper academic!

where is this other place of which you speak?

Scorpette · 18/01/2010 18:08

'Making shit up' - ah, my very reason for living (after my baybee-obsession)! Another writer 'n' pedant: excellent. Now someone will understand the tortured depths of my soul, the swirling maelstrom of emotion in... ooooh, a kitten on the telly!

Greetings Eadcase (see wot I did there?)! Now please stop fucking mentioning the C word. You can say cunt as much as you like, but not the jinx that rhymes with 'lamp'. I had to defer my PhD in Critical Theory until this Autumn - if you think it's hard putting up with twats thinking Creative Writing is non-subject, try explaining to others what Critical Theory is

Oh, I went there with the emoticons!

Thanks Bessie for your lovely updiffular recommendations - I manoeuvred myself to put my appalling ladygut near the laptop screen and then prodded vaguely in the direction of me womb and yelled 'See? Bessie says it's my month! Don't let her down!'. Unless the heinous throwing about of the evil C word hasn't already jinxed me

I am mad and fat today - don't look at me. Unclean! Unclean!
