TTC following an ectopic pregnancy

Hi, My DH and I have been TTC for the last 8 months and finally found out I was pregnant before christmas. Since then I have been in hospital and have been treated for an ectopic pregnancy. I was given a hefty dose of Methotrexate which has made me feel rotten and should induce a miscarriage soon. We can't start TTC for 3 months now which is really hard to take as it took us a while the first time - but everything will have to be on hold until the summer now. Has anyone experienced this?

Hello Genidef its really scary ttc again isnt it I am deserate to get pg again but so scared it will happen again. But remember its only 15% chance of it happening again so the odds are in your favour. Have you had any follow up or tests since have they told you if your other tube is ok.
Me and Lissie are in the same boat as you so lets hope we get some more bfp soon on this thread. Pink elephant had an ep at about the same time as you and has just found out she is pg 1st month ttc.
Hi Lissie started to take 75mg aspirin at the begining of this cycle. Not sure if I should or not I am starting to rattle all these tablets and vitamin I am taking. It a shame you cant get hsg done before your appointment but at least its all booked. How are you feeling this month about ttc, I am pretty sure I ov from my side with the tube this month so I am really hoping it works this month. Other wise it will be july before we properly try again. I did say if I wasnt pg by June I would start looking into other options Might see my consultant privatly. I dont know if I can face ivf but if that the only way. I dont know where we will get the money from my mum said she will help a bit but we will have to find most of it. Everyone says it will only be a matter time but I just want a baby now.
When are you going on holiday?

lissielou · 14/05/2007 18:45

friday. im due to ov from my tubed side too. ive self medicated 75mg asprin too, doesnt do any harm but you should tell docs you are taking it. tbh im v positive about this month. im fertile from thurs on, going on a 29d cycle. i always thought i had a 28d one coz af always starts 4w later to the day but worked it out properly and its 29d

I always thought I had a 28 day cycle to until I worked it out properly I cant count either
Do you think I should make an app with my gp about aspirin or wait until I get pg or see the consultant.

Thanks for your responses. I have a two year old daughter - we actually got pregnant the second time within a couple of months of trying. Found out about the ectopic at 6 wks - no choice whatsoever but to remove the tube. They found endo symptoms during the surgery but then told me that sometimes this is common in pregnancy (?!) At first the surgeon said she would do an HSG before I ttc, then she decided against that for whatever reason, told me to go for it, and that she would do it if I had problems getting pregnant. Which of course, i'm panicking could mean another ectopic. Anyway, it was a fortuitous time to try this weekend, so we went for it...I am actually booked to see her on Weds (for this and other reasons)...am wondering if I have been crazy to try but she did say not to bother with the HSG. SO who knows? I've never had symptoms of endo before, I'm nearly 37, and felt basically, why not?

Is the asprin particularly helpful against Ectopics?! Have never heard that but would be interested to understand reason for the aspirin. I have heard about it in connection with miscarriages.

lissielou · 14/05/2007 21:51

not sure if it helps with a history of ep but helps with blood flow.

cedar12 · 15/05/2007 07:56

I am not sure with the connection with ep either but I remember Aitch saying she took it. She hasnt been around for a while so if anyone sees her point her in this direction. I read an article about it generaly increasing fertility. But I am a bit worried about self prescribing.

cedar12 · 15/05/2007 08:03

I felt better after having an hsg. As after my 1st ep they didnt do one and we ttc for 18 months only to be told when I did eventually have hsg tube was slightly blocked and I needed lap and dye to unblock it. It might put your mind at rest but remember as with all procedures there is a risk of infection. I took some antibiotics to cover my self. Good luck with your appointment and let us know how you get on.

PinkElephant · 15/05/2007 09:28

Genidef - yes I felt better for having an HSG xray too. I was scared of TTC again after the ectopic and although the HSG xray result did put my mind at rest that there were no blockages in my tubes, it still couldn't tell whether my cilia were working (which are the hairs in your tubes which push the egg to the womb). What they medic did say after it was done was that it heps to flush your tubes which can help you pregnant and I am proof of that!! It took us 8mths the first time and one month this time....I'm sure its the HSG which helped. I'd definately ask for one.
Lissie - talking of HSG's....how are you doing? If you don't get an appoint for another few months will you TTC anyway?
Cedar - Good luck this month....lets hope its worked. Yes I know what you mean about going privately, you just want to get things rolling don't you....its so sad that we have to pay a fortune for this to be done.
I have my first scan on thursday....hoping that as my beta HCG's are above 2000 that they will see where my beanie is. Can't relax until I've got the result. keep getting odd bit of cramping in an evening and got overwhelming nausea last night uuugh!! I'm not 6wks until thursday....when do all the symptoms morning sickness etc start?

lissielou · 15/05/2007 14:25

PE, yes am quite positive about this month tbh. good news about your appt. i got ms from 3w with all my pgs but i think it varies from pg to pg as well as woman to woman

cedar12 · 15/05/2007 14:37

Good luck with your scan I will be thinking of you on thursday pe. I am sure everything will be fine make sure you keep on popping back to let us know how you are getting on. I felt morning sickness from 5-6 wks I think with dd.

Genidef · 15/05/2007 20:47

Pink Elephant _ I don't think BUPA will pay for the HSG. It would be considered a fertility treatment. A friend who had this done said hers cost a grand all told. The doctor was saying £175. Can I be cheeky and ask how much your procedure was?

cedar12 · 16/05/2007 09:08

If you need to go private for hsg I think bupa quoted me about £550 but i ended up having it done on the nhs. A fertility clinic quoted me about £250 for a hycosy which is an ultra sound instead of an xray. But I had both mine done on nhs as wait wasnt to long.

PinkElephant · 16/05/2007 18:30

Genidef - I had the HSG done on the NHS. Maybe its dependant on your particular hospital/trust, funding and protocols etc. I must admit I was a bit pushy for it and nagged till I got one, but it didn't seem to be a problem as the ward sister said that everyone who had experienced an ectopic has one to rue out problems conceiving again. Could you ask for one perhaps?

Hi Lissie and Cedar - I'll let you know what happens tommorow. Do not fear, I shall be hanging around until you all get your BFP and I can celebrate with you......erm thats if you don't mind?

OP posts:
Genidef · 16/05/2007 22:02

I saw the doctor today. I think I just might be wrong about BUPA not paying. Fingers crossed!

lissielou · 16/05/2007 22:10

oh PE, that would be great. what times your scan?

PinkElephant · 17/05/2007 14:38

I had my fisrt scan today and its all good news . My beanie made it to my womb this time and I saw the little sac. There is a cyst from my ovary to the right which has probably being causing the cramps and apparently it should dissapear in the next few weeks. Got to go back in 2wks for another scan to check there is a little baby in the sac!! Now I'm debating whether to fly in 10days to Canada, I did ask and the nurse said there is no research to prove its dangerous or its safe. Should I go, its only for 5days, or should I put my feet up at home, which is what the nurse said she would do in my position.
How are you all today?

OP posts:
cedar12 · 17/05/2007 16:36

So pleased for you pink elephant Its a tricky one about flying I should go with your gut feeling. Sorry I am not much help.

cedar12 · 18/05/2007 08:16

Have a nice holiday Lissie

cedar12 · 25/05/2007 10:37

Hello everyone I think your all on holiday at the moment. But need to get a few things off my chest, AF due on Monday finding all this waiting awful and not feeling very hopeful this month not sure why as I am sure I ov from my good side. I cant believe we have been ttc for 2 1/2 years now and dd is 4. Have been thinking lots and have decided to have ivf I cant carry on waiting and waiting. I know it not a great success rate but I will try anything at the moment. We don't get any thing on the nhs as we have already got a child. Luckily my mum and dad have offered to help with the cost. Not sure what we will do if this fails but I am not going to think of that.
My pg friend has been on annual leave all this week I promised I would meet up with her but cant face it and still haven't phoned her. Sorry to be miserable I am not as miserable as i sound honestly.

lissielou · 25/05/2007 11:54

oh cedar {{hug}} i hope that it works for you. mustve been a tough decision to make.

PE, yay! must admit was thinking of you this week. you must be so relieved!

99redballoons · 25/05/2007 13:55

Hi girls, sorry I haven't been around for a while. No time to myself at all these days....

Great news PE. I had the cramping and some brown discharge up to wk7 which they put down to the cyst left by the corpus luteum (?) I found I had symptoms 4-6wks, then they disappeared for a couple of wks and came back around wk 8!! So who knows.. but it's mainly to reassure if they come and go it doesn't mean the worst.

Hi Cedar, such a hard decision. I don't know alot about IVF except what I've read on a few MN threads. Is there a way to boost your ovulation without the egg removal/sperm removal etc? I mean is there something else that can be tried that means you'll release more eggs or a guaranteed release that month? Sorry, rambling a bit, not quite sure what I'm on about!

Hi lissie and the others

lissie · 26/05/2007 09:28

are you thinking of clomid 99rb?

PinkElephant · 26/05/2007 17:00

Hi all,
Its been quiet on here recently, No holiday for me...I've decided not to go. Really don't want to take any chances with this one.
Cedar - I can completely understand your reasons for wanting to try IVF. I would want to go down that route too if I'd been through what you have too. Good luck and don't think of the money....think happiness
Lissie - how was your hols?
99rb - yes this is what they have said about the cyst, but I have to have another scan I think to check whether it has reduced in size and also to see a heartbeat

OP posts:
lissie · 26/05/2007 17:33

cedar12 · 27/05/2007 10:01

Well af arrived last night so another month over with. But feel a bit better now it started. Sent my referral letter to ivf clinic in Woking last night.
Pink elephant glad you still feeling ok I think you made the right decision about the holiday.
Lissie sorry I didnt ask about your holiday did you all have a good time? Do you think clomid would work in my case? I am not sure.
Hello 99rb, is every thing ok with you?
