TTC following an ectopic pregnancy

Hi, My DH and I have been TTC for the last 8 months and finally found out I was pregnant before christmas. Since then I have been in hospital and have been treated for an ectopic pregnancy. I was given a hefty dose of Methotrexate which has made me feel rotten and should induce a miscarriage soon. We can't start TTC for 3 months now which is really hard to take as it took us a while the first time - but everything will have to be on hold until the summer now. Has anyone experienced this?

Hi girls, thx so much for thinking of me. Wellllll, my story as short as possible, after going to A&E on Sat lunchtime the pain just got worse into the evening and I was admitted onto the ward Sat. evening for observation. Again they said I couldn't be scanned till Monday but atleast I was in the right place if my situation changed (was there from Sat. to Mon). Resting helped, but the pain was always there. Finally Monday morning came and I was scanned and surprisingly the outcome was not one I had pictured - the baby was still only 4mm and only a feotal pole could be seen, no heartbeat, and I was supposed to be 9.5wks. It seemed less and less likely to be ectopic as I didn't have tenderness where they thought I might have and my HCG level was ~45000 which was too high for an EP apparently. But they took more bloods on Mon mornig and it showed a drop to 37000. They advised to scan again in a week to see if I had my dates wrong, but the last time we bd was mid-Jan and I tested BFP at the beginning of Feb so I know I was 9+wks. The baby looked like it did when I miscarried the first time, so dh & I knew there was nothing to be done. As I wasn't miscarrying naturally I opted for a D&C (they called it something else?). I guess I was atleast expecting a mc of a 9wk embryo, not 6wks as I had symptoms right up to Friday last wk.

So that's my story, no baby after 2 months. I feel so empty, so normal , like shouldn't I have something at the end of this? Where's my baby? But what's keeping me going is looking at my two angels at home (ds&dd) and being thankful I have them.

I will keep checking this thread as you have been such a support to me.

So sorry to hear your situation, glimmer. Let us know how you are.

lissielou · 13/03/2007 17:39

oh 99rb {{hug}} wish there was something i could say, its so unfair! please feel free to cat me if you want to talk.

AitchYouBerk · 13/03/2007 18:37

oh 99, it's too sad... i am so very sorry for you and your family.

99redballoons · 13/03/2007 19:29

Hi girls back at you]

Must admit I do feel a bit better this time round, if that's possible! My first mc was my first pg and happened naturally and was a complete shock at 6.5wks. But this time round, I guess cos we could understand clearly what we were seeing on the scan (having been there before) and I had 2-3 days of worrying something was up, plus not having the drawn-out mc, cramps/bleeding etc, the d&c has made it less difficult iykwim.

How are you both?

AitchYouBerk · 13/03/2007 19:50

me, i'm fine, i'm an interloper on this thread, not even ttc but after two eps and a successful pg i sometimes have thoughts to offer. love to you adn your family.

lissielou · 13/03/2007 20:22

ok ta, 1st af since my ep is a bit of a monster but it means that my cycles almost gone straight back to normal, so am v lucky.

Lubyloo · 13/03/2007 21:46

Pink Elephant and Cedar - Hope it goes well for you both tomorrow. Will be thinking of you. Let us know how you get on.

99redballoons · 14/03/2007 09:43

glad all is ok (as best it can be iykwim!). Life just trundles on doesn't it! Feeling a bit better today, body wise. Felt a bit guilty asking mil to take dd to her baby class this morning, but just couldn't bare the thought of facing everyone (not that anyone would probably know!). It wouldn't have been fair for dd to miss out, she just loves this little music class, a chance to boogie away.

lissielou · 14/03/2007 09:47

lol, its totally understandable 99rb, you feel like the rest of the world is moving on while youre stuck in slow mo. take a bit of time for youreslf, you still have to mourn.

Glimmer · 14/03/2007 16:24

So sorry to hear your sad news 99rb. I second what you say about the 2nd mc: the first one was a complete shock but whatever I will learn next week, I will be more prepared. But some women find it gets harder which each one -- I really don't know. I wish you a lot of strength in the coming weeks.

My bleeding has stopped now and I have no pain, so my EP worries were hopefully wrong. I am trying to hold out for the scan next Tuesday, where I will hopefully learn more.

All the best to everybody!

lissielou · 14/03/2007 19:37

fingers crossed for you glimmer.

cedar12 · 15/03/2007 09:51

So sorry to hear your sad news 99rb, Look after your self.
Glimmer I hope every thing works out for you finger crossed.
I had my hsg yesterday I pushed the Dr for a bit more info this time she showed me the dye going through the tube. When they did the last picture she back out to talk to me (last time she hid!) and told me the tube is open but will look at the films in more detail and do a report. The fertility nurse said she will look at the results for me when they go on the system which will be today or tomorrow and then talk to my consultant for me. So I am hoping I will be able to talk to my consultant on the phone and wont need to see him yet if its good news.
I hope your hsg went ok pink elephant I was thinking about you.
I hope everyone else is ok.

lissielou · 15/03/2007 09:53

ooh everything crossed ceder. did it hurt?

cedar12 · 15/03/2007 09:59

Not very comfortable, hurt when they put the dye in. But once it was all over no pain at all really just a few cramps.
How are you doing Lissie?

lissielou · 15/03/2007 10:04

not too bad cycle is a bit squiffy but means that im fertile after weve seen the specialist for the 1st time. see and we go to docs on the 21st

PinkElephant · 15/03/2007 10:38

Cedar - I was thinking about you too!! Bloody hell it hurt like mad, it felt like a stabbing pain to the right and then the left as she shot the dye through. Apparently everthing looks "normal" but she said she had to push hard to clear the left side where I'd had my ectopic. I really didn't expect it too be so painful. Last night it got worse and today it aches and cramps so much!! I've taken brufren and paracetamol and it still hurts - struggling to stand up straight, it feels like my ectopic did... like I've been thumped in the pelvis area with a baseball!! Is this normal? I got some antibiotics as cover ... did you get some too?

99rd - I'm so, so very sorry for you loss.

ouch PE!

cedar12 · 15/03/2007 11:26

Pe its not the most pleasant experience is it, but good news your tubes are clear.
I started antibiotics on monday got 7 day course Doxycyline and metronidazole I am going to rattle soon with all the vitamin etc as well!

PinkElephant · 15/03/2007 12:05

Oh yuk - metronidazole! Bet you feel crap taking those. I got a prescription for my GP for that and Cefalexin but told not to take them unless I was sure I got an infection. After the HSG they gave me three days of ciproflox as cover just incase so I'm taking these uugh!!

Lissie - yes ouch!!

Feeling really nervous today waiting for the nurse to phone with my results I hope she phones before I go to work at lunch time.
Phoned and asked yesterday but she hadnt looked them up yet. She said she would phone as soon as she has had a chance. Now I feel like a nag!

lissielou · 16/03/2007 10:02

try again now cedar, she may need a nudge. when i was waiting for my HCG results i rang up 8 times in 1/2 hour

cedar12 · 16/03/2007 10:34

I will give her to 11.45 then phone her I think, and give her my mobile number so she can phone me at work. I hate waiting they must realise how horrid it is.

cedar12 · 16/03/2007 10:35

Maybe she is in clinic this morning I supose.

PinkElephant · 16/03/2007 13:04

Any news cedar? God I feel so uncomfortable today, I had so much pain from the HSG all of yesterday and today its little easier but still damn painful. I'm sure this isn't right but can't imagine what else it could be other than bruising and inflammation I phoned the unit and they said to just watch out for bleeding which I've not had. How are you feeling?
Now I've been reading on the ectopic trust forum about folic acid etc and when you can start to TTC again. If you had methotrexate (which wipes out your folic acid levels) are you supposed to be taking a higher dose than the 400mcg for TTC ladies? Am I safe to TTC again if I've only been taking this dose for 8wks? Its all so confusing as the ectopic formum suggests you should be taking it for 12wks before TTC and perhaps at a higher level....anyone know?
