ERTD = Evil Red Tide of Dooooooommmmmmm. Or AF to most others.
Pant snot = Egg white cervical mucus.
Doing a kitten = Getting upduffed soon after joining (warning: may induce in other posters).
Viroid = This is you, dear poster. The reason for this is a closely guarded secret, known only to....er....well, nobody as far as we can tell!
POAS = Pee On A Stick (of the pregnancy detecting kind, not from a tree). Also known as PIAR (Pee In A Ramekin - cos we're posh birds innit).
Shagging like something = JSing like a teenage nymphomaniac.
Giving a hooya = Giving a much needed slap to a fellow poster in danger of slipping into ttc obsession.

Boy I might have missed it and I forgot to ask, but did you tell your dp/dh yesterday? GL with the digi this morning, if you're doing one?

Ok, I've been very bored googling as to why we don't just get up duffel every month. I think, and this is my conclusion after reading a great deal of woolly opinion based sites, that it comes down to variables.

There are a lot of them and they all need to be right. Your dp's swimmers get made about 70 days before conception (give or take) and so 2 months before js-ing he must not have done anything on that day to affect quality/quantity in that particular deposit. Then you must ovulate, the egg must not get caught at the opening of the Fallopian tube, the egg must be viable and contain the right number of sets of DNA. It must also contain a particular protein to allow the shell to admit a sperm at the right moment. It must float down to meet a sperm. The sperm must be there to meet it and ideally had time to mature (but not so much time that they run out of energy and give up or die). Your CM must be egg white and nutritious enough to support the sperm. Your cervix must be open to admit them in the first place. Then the magic bit must happen and the egg and sperm meet. The divide-y bit must happen correctly (and apparently this is quite hit and miss) and the womb lining must be hospitable, not too thick, not too thin, and the egg must implant properly, releasing the right hormones, and enough of them, to shutdown your ovaries and signal a bfp.

Fucking Christ. That is a LOT of variables, and some of them get more and more variable as you get older. If I am right, the more variables there are, the lower the chance of it occurring as you have to take a 1:2 chance each individual thing will happen (it will, or it will not) and there are 10-15 things which must occur for conception to take place. For all we know some or most of them are occurring every month, it's just that we need them all to happen for a pg to occur.

And you have no control over a lot of these things. You can't control how many pairs of DNA the egg has, for example.

So: the sites seem to say, increase your chances by looking at the things you can control (js-ing at ov time etc).

Does that make sense? It's just my idea.

Last time we were ttc and I was told it might take a couple of years due to my pcos, he was all geared up to js-aplenty for ages, then upduffed me in the first month. I was too ill to shag at all in my pg so he got a total of about 10 shags in a 15 month period and all at the beginning. Poor bloke. I think he's hoping for a few months this time

Ding, I'm only a day late, but I think after 5 years of clockwork cycles I'm panicking. The paid I had yesterday convinced me it would show up. But she ain't. I even put off Dtd last night cos I was convinced it would get messy!!

No I did last bfn yesterday, fmu. Figured it would show by then if there was anything good to report. Didnt cave with the FRER, based on your science that actually the ic's are prob more sensitive and are pretty much the same. Errr Ding is this you egging me on to do another??? Lol

Oh wow, Ding - you found out such a lot. I'm obviously googling the wrong sites! Thanks for finding all that out and posting. Yep, that's a lot of variables. It certainly answers my question and I think you're right that it all rests on these which is such a bugger I know that knowing all this might make some people a bit depressed because you can't control the variables on the whole, but I weirdly quite like knowing what's going on even though I can't control it. I feel less in the dark and at the mercy of nature IYKWIM? Anyway, thanks Ding - much appreciated.

I'm okay now, but think I might have crumpled this weekend if it wasn't for you guys and this forum. Been feeling a bit fragile as no BFP, no job and feeling a bit poor too. We're fine on DH's wage, but it's not the same as having my own money and independence IYKWIM. Trying to pick myself up now though. I have lost 3lbs this week though - now just need to keep them off and get rid of some more!

Andie (I think it was - sorry if I got the wrong person but can't scroll back) - that's so shit about the little beggars flouring and egging your house. I tape up the letterbox when I go to my mum's in the city and without fail every Sat night someone pulls her TV cable off the wall at the front of the house - mean shits. (She doesn't have a front garden.) Did they come back at all?

When my father drove taxis many years ago, he'd always keep a dozen or so in the front seat on mischief nights so he could fight back. Bear and Red They didn't come back, my neighbour thinks he knows who it was (kid who's always in trouble) so will give him a friendly warning. We live in an end terrace with a walkway right beside us so our front garden is apparently a rubbish bin and our lounge window an easy target for the local youf.

Ding That's an incredible list of variables to align. Nature is amazing! My DS was extremely interested in the in utero section at the science museum today, he sat for ages watching a little film about how the embryo grows. In balance he was equally in awe of the section about poo so....
