Evening all

So todays christmas prep is scrolling pinterest - i'm definitely going for an almost gold front door - then the main tree will be in the living room with only gold decorations

The small tree 🤷‍♀️

Please don't wish September and October away because of a love of Christmas or indeed the autumn. Preparing and things like decided where and with whom you will be spending Christmas are fine of course, just don't ignore the lovely things about this month and next.

This is true! All of the next four months must be enjoyed!

Ive got a tree outside my bedroom window - its leaves havent turned yet, looking forward to that! I love when the leaves fall and leave big piles against the kerb - dd is encouraged to run through them like i used to 😄🥰

I love everything about autumn and the countdown to winter. I’ve been blackberry picking today and made crumble and apple sauce to have with roast pork tonight with apples from the garden.
I love a bit of garden centre mooching in autumn, and countryside walks are the best when all the leaves are changing.
We also seem to have some beautiful sunrises and sunsets in September and October and I just love getting up early and dipping in the sea for sunrise when the sky looks like it’s on fire.
Autumn days can be lovely and warm but with nice crispy cooler mornings and evenings, I just love everything about it. The only thing I’m going to buy for the house though is a new St Eval candle, one with a scent inspired by being outdoors in autumn and one of those light up Scandinavian stars that you hang in the window as the shorter days draw in.

Love this - i would love a diptyque (sp) candle - or a jo malone one 😍

Hello fellow Sagi! 😄Are you November or December? I love the sound of the gold decorated tree! What colour lights would you go for?
I haven't been blackberry picking in years. My frends and I would go blackberry picking as kids. I don't know why as our mum's never did anything with them! 😅

hotmumshit · 08/09/2026 06:21

I'm sorry I disappeared! Life!

Its lovely and chilly this morning - so happy 😄

@Openmouthinsertfood late november! I have a very wintery sounding date of birth, if that makes any sense? You?

I didnt know blackberry picking was a thing! 🙈 @EllaPaella but would try conker hunting, if theyre still about

I am thinking gold twinkling lights for the tree, although I hope it looks better than it sounds

Hello, another autumn lover here. I feel a huge sense of relief when the days get a bit cooler and more manageable. I find summer hard work. I burn easily, so have to wear sun cream, which then feels clammy and sticky, and there’s a sense of obligation that because it’s sunny, you HAVE to be outside. I have to think more carefully about clothes, which shoes go with them, whether they’ll rub blisters etc. And I’m rubbish at summer food, I just never know what to make! Hurray for autumn, bring out the jumpers and boots and get a bit hearty stew cooking!

reallyalurker · 08/09/2026 12:26

Sorry, I didn't reply about the booties - yes, going to make them too. I have finished the hat - knitting the leaves was a bit addictive, may have to make some more!

Does anyone have good autumn soup recipes? I have a stock lake to use up. Thinking maybe spiced parsnip.

hotmumshit · 09/09/2026 17:40

Ive got the heating on! Dd was a little miserable and I couldnt work out why, i think she was feeling the cold

I've got a steak pie for dinner, and I'll have to use instant mash and gravy, but it'll still be good

I need to do a big autumn clean!

Yep. We've had to put the heating on every morning since DD wrnt back to school last Wednesday. It's cold and dark, and she likes her uniform to warm up on the radiator for half an hour while she had her breakfast.

I reckon a week or two before we start smelling the woodsmoke in the village from folk lighting their fires.

Castlerigg · 10/09/2026 06:58

Thank you for the reminder @RainbowZebraWarrior, I need to order some firewood. I haven’t had the heating on yet, yesterday was actually a lovely day and quite warm, but I need to get some logs in so that I’m ready when it gets chilly.

I do like it, but that awkward bit where it's too warm to put the heating on, but you feel a bit chilly indoors (cold floors etc) is a PITA. It goes on for too long, but then who wants to spend money on heating before you really have to!

Can't dry any washing either.

Can I recommend Nordic Socks? My feet are cold in winter and the socks are marvellous in our cold house.

Your village sounds so cosy

Excellent idea re uniform on the radiator, will steal that for dd!

Oooh, can I join! I love all the seasons for different reasons. DD (5) loves this time of year, already started the countdown to Halloween, then it will be weeks of Christmas chat 😆, hopefully DS (18m) will get into it more this year.

Really got to get organised though - so far nothing booked 😆

hotmumshit · 10/09/2026 19:53

Welcome! @gettingcoldergettingcosier

Love to your dd, its the most wonderful time of the year!

I'm determined to get my flat sorted for Christmas - got to get on it

Do you just feel much happier?! 😄

I’m enjoying September so far as a month where I can save a bit of money on my energy bill where I don’t have to use the aircon or the heating.

Can I join in please?
I've already bought lots for Christmas and I'm a crafter too so I have all hand made decorations and lots of gifts. And I have a November birthday.

And this year I have to be super organised as I go into hospital for major surgery on 2nd October and I'll be out of action for about three months. Can't lift anything. Will be so hard.

gettingcoldergettingcosier · 10/09/2026 21:23

@hotmumshityou've inspired me and I've ordered our grown up advent calendars this evening - a Lakrids by Bulow large chocolate liquorice one (for me and DH, 4 chocolates behind each door 😁) and a champneys one for me as it was on offer and I had a boots voucher that needed using 😆.

The kids will get cheapo ones nearer the time...

Best of luck for your surgery and recovery. Sounds like at least you are a bit ahead of the game with getting gifts in.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 11/09/2026 06:35

I bought this lovely Emma Bridgewater bucket for our daily foraging in the woods. Now that the blackberries have gone over, it's been used to collect sloes, elderberries, rosehips and now conkers! (I pick them while I am waiting for DD to come out of school)

I now have 10 bags each of sloes and blackberries in the freezer along with all the different preserves that I've already made.

Happy Days!

Ah best of luck with your surgery and recovery!

I did the same 2 years ago where I was due to have surgery just before Christmas so I said ‘let me know what present you want now or you’re not getting anything’

zacsGranny · 11/09/2026 09:52

I've done most of my buying. Will do some making while recovering, and hope that I can manage all the wrapping. The hard part will be remembering where I've put everything!
