Stocking fillers for kids at uni

mylittleprince · 28/10/2023 10:46

Kids not ready to give up stockings just yet but with them getting older it's harder. We have a rule of 10 presents in a stocking (to keep it fair!)

So far thinking alcohol minis, posh toiletries, designer pants. Will get a food gift card and put in a small box.

Trying to think of things that would be useful to take back to uni.

Any recommendations for any new small board games / card games to fit in stockings?

Ds uses his laptop a lot for school and says the most useful present he's ever received was a multi USB connector that we put in his stocking last Christmas

My ds uses his computer a lot because he's a software developer. I've brought him a screen cleaning set!

Loving the ideas here. My ds didn't want his stocking last year. Not sure if it was because he was 18 or the first year without my mum at Xmas we weren't feeling it.

This year I'm thinking of getting him a new stocking and filling it as a present iyswim? Some great ideas here.

So far he also has a Pringles house, Oreo's tube, jammy dodgers tin and a periodic table water bottle 🤷‍♀️

A stocking stuffed with £5 notes, condoms and alcohol miniatures, a packet of nurofen and a bottle of full fat coke.

I like your style Grin

Hot sauce seems popular with boys, but food related are good, bulk rather than quality

£3.50 in Sainsburys atm with Nectar card. Interesting flavours too 👌

I bought the Cat lovers one for DS. I think they are normal flavours but different packaging.

sugarrosepetal · 28/10/2023 18:12

What about a mystery box? There's lots of good ones online

my dds get most money spent on stockings so i do :
bottle of the ( very) expensive shampoo tand conditioner they use but cannot afford themselves
whatever bit sof make up or face creams jollop they really love but again cannot afford for themselves
they all get chocolate in some format
they all get a set of underwear - 2 like really lacey/luxy stuff from somewhere light Lounge or myla ( yes they do have expensive tastes egged on by my own lingerie obsession) and 2 like calvin klein
then this year they are all getting :
airtags and an airtag holder
a bottle of perfume ( 2/5 like chanel number 5, one lies miss dior and one ..i am yet to find out)
and a gift card for whichever food outlet they want - someone wants starbies, someone else wants wagamamas, and wierdly one wants greggs !
and then i chuck in book, socks, a lottery scratch card.

but we are super fortunate to be able to afford this .

So far for DS I have bought a pen looking magnetic screwdriver. It looks like a pen but you unscrew the top and there's screwdriver heads
A bit like this

Favourite condiments orherb/spice blends that are expensive but cheer up a student staple cheap meal.

If you want to fill a stocking but not giver her a load of stuff to cart back on the train you could wrap up nice foody or household bits maybe new glasses, water bottle, decent coffee treat chocolates - then explain you will eat/use the actual stocking contents at home, but will be sending her a Sainsbury delivery with duplicates in the first week of term. She'd have the fun of unwrapping things but wouldn't need to carry them. You could always wrap pictures of things, and give her the cash or do an Amazon delivery of the actual item?

sep135 · 28/10/2023 20:10

Mine always want a tub of this (from Amazon). It's a peppermint powder that you sprinkle in rugby boots, hockey astros etc. Not cheap but worth every penny in stopping the stench.

Mine also likes a Costa gift card and UA heatgear socks (very cushioned and comfortable).

Brilliant thread, thank you! Have ordered a pringles cracker (who knew!), crocs lights and that brilliant looking USB/adaptor thingy that was mentioned at the top of the thread. For DS 17.

LuckOfTheDrawer · 28/10/2023 20:13

60 second scribbles is really good fun, and it's quite small too.

A stocking stuffed with £5 notes, condoms and alcohol miniatures, a packet of nurofen and a bottle of full fat coke.

I'd have been horrified to get condoms in a stocking packed by my mum 😂

RandomMess · 28/10/2023 20:32

Always a chocolate reindeer from Aldi!

For crackers:
Scented tea lights
Lighter
Scratch card
Lindor choc truffle things or similar

Saggypants · 28/10/2023 20:32

I am really trying to avoid more 'stuff' so this year's stockings will have toiletries, food/drink and clothes. I do try to source interesting varieties they won't have seen before, though.

RandomMess · 28/10/2023 20:40

The game bananagrams

Nothingcompares44 · 28/10/2023 20:46

@Forgoodnesssakejustletme
I was just about to suggest Kluster! This went down really well last year. It's very simple but good fun

Solmum1964 · 28/10/2023 21:06

I don't like buying tat so everything has to be useful/consumable:
Socks of some description is a must. Could be colourful normal socks or sports related.
Toiletries gift set - something they like but don't want to spend the money buying.
Box of Jelly Babies
Book - autobiography from a favourite sports person; cookbook or something fiction.
Pyjamas or sometimes just a 2 pack of pyjama bottoms
Pack of underwear (looking for seamless boxers for one son this year.
A mug relating to a sport they do - other interest (biggest hit a few years ago was a rainbow bike themed espresso mug.
Something related to a sport they do - base layer top or shorts; swimming goggles; shin pad liners.
Selection box, or some nicer Christmas themed chocolates.
Last year, Tesco had single bottles of Christmas beer in a tube.
Previous years have included gin/rum selection boxes; sewing kits; measuring spoons that fit in spice jars; hot sauce selection.

MrsCarson · 28/10/2023 21:36
