Stocking fillers for kids at uni

mylittleprince · 28/10/2023 10:46

Kids not ready to give up stockings just yet but with them getting older it's harder. We have a rule of 10 presents in a stocking (to keep it fair!)

So far thinking alcohol minis, posh toiletries, designer pants. Will get a food gift card and put in a small box.

Trying to think of things that would be useful to take back to uni.

Any recommendations for any new small board games / card games to fit in stockings?

Haven’t read every word of every thread but a really good tin opener (like a magican)

Herts7 · 29/10/2023 11:33

Following on from the previous post, a really good veg knife and peeler are always useful 😁

I’m laughing (in disbelief), at some of the lists of things for “stocking fillers.” Also wondering what the main presents will be, when the stockings are costing in 3 figures?

I was going to recommend these too!

Ours have generally only had a stocking and one main present in the £75 - £100 range. Last year it was cash towards sport specific footwear.
When they were younger a lot of the stocking fillers were things we'd have bought anyway but got wrapped and included in the stocking.
I get a lot of enjoyment from doing the stockings and also do selections for DH and MIL. Some items have become part of our Christmas traditions.

mylittleprince · 29/10/2023 12:46

@miserablebitch I don't think most of the things listed on here are particularly outlandish?

You can't expect a stocking for a teen/young adult to cost the same as that for a toddler.
I totally get that lots of people will have stopped doing stockings by the time their kids are this age, to be honest as long as my kids come home for Xmas I'll probably always do it.

I was thinking much the same. After all that they wouldn't be getting much else. Guess this thread isn't for those of us who count the pennies!

Add to this list:

Ready made cocktails in glass bottles
Fragrance

Odd question but something I'm trying to track down. My DD loves cooking. I'd like to send her off to Uni with a range of spices/herbs but not the full jars as I don't think she'd have the space? Any ideas of containers I could buy please?

I bought DS a masala dabba. Something like this

Different people have different budgets, this isn't news. If people can afford to buy something nice why shouldn't they?

My older 2 DC are away all year at university. I don't give them money, they live off their loan/grant, bursaries, earnings from holiday jobs and savings. If I want to buy them new pyjamas, a book that interests them and some nice toiletries I don't think that's exactly going overboard? To me that's better than lots of cheap bits that will break or not be used.

LuckOfTheDrawer · 29/10/2023 13:14

I agree, different people have different budgets 🤷‍♀️.

DS's stocking is probably coming in a bit more expensive than I'd like this year, so maybe I'll re-jig things between his stocking and other presents.

NetZeroZealot · 29/10/2023 13:18

I always put a Xmas tree decoration in mine - so that they will have their own set when they leave home.

NetZeroZealot · 29/10/2023 13:18

Also, a bottle of Sriracha!

Tulipvase · 29/10/2023 13:32

My mum was still doing me a stocking before she got too unwell and I was late 30s. My dad took over for a couple of years and we still got fizz and a scratch card.

Some good ideas here. I tend to add one present that they really wanted, not necessarily the most expensive thing but in our house only stockings came from FC so did always try to add something off their list.

I definitely count pennies, which is why I do this. I pick things up all year, and make it very specific to them.
I can’t afford lots of big presents but I can get them a great stocking. They love it

PattyDukeAstin · 29/10/2023 13:48

Some great ideas at a range of prices. Perhaps the people complaing about the cost might want to offer some cheaper ideas.

Peakypolly · 29/10/2023 15:04

Excellent ideas!
I would add theatre/stand up tickets for their Uni town/city, it's a good way for them to get to know a different part of town and the second ticket can be used to cheer up a mate or an excuse to date "My Mum got me these tickets for Christmas. Do you fancy it?"

Poo neutraliser (not sure of the proper name) my DC are conscious of their rooms being smelly! I get these https://detoorp.com/products/colt-willow-potty-spray?variant=44655583461664&currency=GBP&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjO_Dn8GbggMVl5SDBx3T_gs4EAQYCCABEgITxPD_BwE but there are many cheapo ones available.

Fun versions of useful things. I'm not at Uni any more (not for 24 years!!!) But I do have to write a lot of notes and every year I ask my DH for a bundle of Papermate Inkjoy gel pens in purple, because they give me joy to write with.
If you get useful things it means that they continued to be bought by the gifted - and it's much nicer to have ones that are better/more fun than would be bought by oneself.
And special foodie/drink things that can be shared (if they want to), or an ingredient they like which is out of their current price bracket.

@babymidgetgem sorry I’m only seeing this now. Just from Amazon. I’ll try and get a picture.

A stocking stuffed with £5 notes, condoms and alcohol miniatures, a packet of nurofen and a bottle of full fat coke.

Awesome!
My DCs' stockings (had since birth!) always contain:
Satsuma
Chocolate orange
Choc coins: one milk one white
Socks/undies
Coffee gift card
Shaving gear (Harry's)
Mini Make up (Charlotte Tilbury is doing some nice Christmas sets this year )
Face/feet packs
Novelty bottle opener/jetting/pen.
A silly game/puzzle.
