Is your tree up?

OP posts:
AlwaysLatte · 25/11/2022 17:51

No. It'll be dead by Christmas!!

In November?? It would be dead before Christmas….

We just got our real one today, same as every year, and it it'll definitely still be looking fresh by new year.

Killing trees year on year on year (planted or not - if we didnt clear the land to plant trees what do you think would naturally be there) and repetetively distroying the habitat and homes of many animals, just to watch it die for a few weeks then dumping them at the landfil is in no way better than having a reusable fake that can last a lifetime.

It's perfectly possible for natural Christmas trees to have a net positive effect on the climate, millions of trees growing which would not otherwise be planted. Hardly the same with a fake tree.

There might be reasons to have a fake tree, but the environment isn't one of them, look up what the Soil Association it Carbon Trust have to say on the subject.

We normally do ours the weekend before Christmas, but that's a full week this year which is a bit early. I like to buy real trees once they're reduced and that's normally around the 22nd/23rd :-)

Same here.

My father said that when he was a child there was nothing in the run up to Christmas. On Christmas Eve the children were taken out and when they got home ( in the dark) the tree was up and lit (with candles). It was the most magical experience for them. This was the 1920s so I would say that Christmas Eve is traditional for the tree. @MaryMollyPolly

No, it wont go up until Dec. But I'm not sure when in Dec we will do it as we are just so busy! Usually we do it as early in dec as possible, but this year we have a new cat and he's an absolute butt head and expect him to make it his life goal to wreck the tree. So we may leave it later than usual 😄

happygertie · 25/11/2022 18:11

Mine went up today! It marks the start of my festivities 🥳

AdelineLou · 25/11/2022 18:15

Not till Christmas Eve when family arrive. We decorate it together whilst listening to Christmas music, eating mince pies and drinking Bailey’s.

We’re not talking about winter solstice, though. We’re talking about Christmas. The Christmas tradition is for Christmas Eve, ready for Christmas Day. Anything before that is Advent.

If were talking about Christmas tradition as in only encompassing the christian bible tale of the 12 day journey then christmas trees aren't any part of it so there is no tradition.

Trees exist regardless of if we plant them, land is specifically cleared to create these faux woods and given farming was/is the worst politution disaster to ever hit the world using that it helps in that is not an argument for the planet.

Mines up! I love how cosy it makes the living room feel

wheresthehope · 25/11/2022 18:28

Getting it today! The farms open here in NZ today 🎄

Itsnotaferret · 25/11/2022 18:30

Yep. This afternoon! Ho ho fucking ho

Fairislefandango · 25/11/2022 18:39

We always have a real tree and put it up around the 15th December.

As for the real tree vs fake tree debate - aside from the fact that real trees are obviously much nicer and smell lovely, according to the soil association they are better for the environment, especially if you burn them afterwards.

The carbon footprint of fake trees is large - there's the manufacturing process, the fact that most of them are imported from China and the fact that they end up in landfill (after 4 years' use on average). Plus real trees benefit the environment and wildlife while they are growing.

Traditionally the tree would go up on Christmas Eve (Advent is looking forward to Christmas, not the start of it).

However there’s aren’t many who do it the traditional way anymore.

I’m putting our Advent candleholder out on Sunday, and the candle bridge in the front window.

I can’t wait to light the first candle of Advent. We’ll make mince pies to mark the day. 🕯

I am I’m going back to the old ways next year I’ll have candles for advent.

AdelineLou · 25/11/2022 18:54

Never anything but a real tree. As a little girl that was mine and my dad’s job - I realise now the only damned thing he ever did! We used to travel miles to find the perfect real tree.
Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without the smell of a real tree. We are lucky enough that our local nursery, run by a charity employing adults with additional needs, sell the trees to raise money ( and deliver to the door and pick up again for recycling).

TheTeddyBears · 25/11/2022 19:23

No! However there is a block of flats I drive past on way home and there's 2 flats that put them up around mid November every year! I past tonight and there were 3 maybe even 4 trees up now. None in my estate though. I expect I might see one by end of the wkend though. I used to like putting it up early December when I didn't have kids. Now I kiss don't have the time so it's like whenever I find the chance without the kids being around! Also I've got 2 trees to put up and they are young so they are anything but a help! .

TulipTuesday · 25/11/2022 19:27

Mine went up today!

Is your tree up?
LindorDoubleChoc · 25/11/2022 19:29

No. It will go up mid December and come down on 12th night, same as every year.

People who put their tree up in November and are "sick of the sight of it" by Boxing Day so take it down and clear all the other decorations drive me nuts. They are doing it wrong Grin.

AnnieSnap · 25/11/2022 19:29

No, we put it up a few days before Christmas and it’s down by New Year! When young kids were around the place it went up a bit earlier and came down after New Year’s day.

FinallyHere · 25/11/2022 19:31

Advent wreath with four candles due on Sunday, the first Sunday in advent.

My favourite season.

LindorDoubleChoc · 25/11/2022 19:31

Do the hardcore "not until Christmas Eve" types judge those of us who go for mid-December I wonder?

PinkSyCo · 25/11/2022 19:32

No it’s not even December yet.

Goingfortheblue · 25/11/2022 19:36

@TulipTuesday

Your tree is beautiful, gorgeous and traditional, and I love your decorations round the fireplace. That will be nice this evening!
