Is your tree up?

OP posts:
Figgygal · 25/11/2022 10:23

I'm horrified but ours is going up Sunday as we busy or away after this weekend and can't see it going up until 17th otherwise
It's making me quire ill at the thought lol

TheChosenTwo · 25/11/2022 10:28

No, not until the 17th December this year. Normally it’s a week earlier but dd don’t be home from uni until the 16th and we’re booked into the farm on the 17th. Feels a waste because we take it down on Boxing Day as we go away the day after that every year and always come home the day before we go back to work/school so have the house looking back to normal before we go away.
But we wouldn’t put it up without dd so it’s the 17th December for us.

emmathedilemma · 25/11/2022 10:33

Mine is also in the loft! Doesn't usually go up until mid December but it might stay in the loft this year as I'm away for Xmas and NY.

Um what, technically it should go up on advent, which is the 4th Sunday before Xmas and is this year the 27th November.

Traditionally the tree would go up on Christmas Eve (Advent is looking forward to Christmas, not the start of it).

However there’s aren’t many who do it the traditional way anymore.

I’m putting our Advent candleholder out on Sunday, and the candle bridge in the front window.

I can’t wait to light the first candle of Advent. We’ll make mince pies to mark the day. 🕯

MrsJaniceBing · 25/11/2022 10:35

No. It’s November.
It goes up the second weekend in December.

Charl1009 · 25/11/2022 10:41

Yes went up yesterday as I had a days annual leave and would much rather do it in peace and have the weekend to do other things. Usually results in an argument when DH and the kids do it 😂

chillinwithmygnomies · 25/11/2022 11:08

Yes mines up, a few neighbours around me have their trees up too.

OatFox · 25/11/2022 11:12

Yep! I've had a shitty few years and decided that time doesn't exist so if I can have an extra week or two of joy, I will.

WhistlingInWhistler · 25/11/2022 11:15

No, it would be dead by Christmas if we got one now. We bit then from a local farm and they're still in the ground.

They are suppose to go up on Advent and I dont know ANYONE that uses a real tree.

Not only do most people not like unnessacerily killing trees but bugs and needles everywhere... no thank you plus we cant afford to be buying a new tree every year, its so uneconomical and bad for the enviroment.

Confused Christmas trees are grown as a crop, specifically for, well, Christmas. They aren't chopped down unnecessarily, they wouldn't be there if they went going to be cut down.

I'm surprised you don't know anyone with a real tree, I've got one friend with a beautiful fake I've, but everyone else I know has a real one. Understand about the expense, but not your comment about the environment. A locally grown real tree is better for the environment than a fake one.

Killing trees year on year on year (planted or not - if we didnt clear the land to plant trees what do you think would naturally be there) and repetetively distroying the habitat and homes of many animals, just to watch it die for a few weeks then dumping them at the landfil is in no way better than having a reusable fake that can last a lifetime.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 25/11/2022 12:41

Not yet. My DS has his birthday at the end of November and it is a rule in this house that nothing Christmassy can occur until after his birthday! Next weekend it will be going up!

Goingfortheblue · 25/11/2022 12:52

I looked up to see if artificial trees are better for the environment and the website I found said you would have to reuse an artificial tree for 20 years for it to equal the damage done by getting a real tree every year. That was news to me!

Mine (artificial tree on it's 15th year - 5 years to go!) is up. It's earlier than usual this year. It's been a hard year and it cheers me up. I could never get sick of it tbh.

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 25/11/2022 17:13

I have to say I do really enjoy seeing the odd tree up/lights out a little earlier than most (when it’s one or two dotted about, I hasten to add! Not so much if the whole street is decked out like the Blackpool illuminations...). It’s heartwarming and gives me a little glow inside, thinking that whoever’s done it is happier for it; I always wish them peace and goodwill. There’s one tree up on our little street and I can enjoy a little glimpse whilst walking past in the dark!

No, Christmas Eve is the traditional time to put up a Christmas tree -there are only 12 days of Christmas until 6th January. We always put it up as close to Christmas Eve as possible -usually the weekend before. But I like putting up some advent stuff, like an advent candle and we have a little nativity set, so we set up the basics of that, minus most of the characters; only the three kings who very far away, who we move closer each day to the stable.

Novemberhater · 25/11/2022 17:27

@MaryMollyPolly I'm glad I'm not the only one!

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 25/11/2022 17:30

Oh I like the three kings moving closer as the days go by...that’s a lovely idea.

Given that decorated trees where originally for the winter solstice which is the 21st december its impossible that the 24th (3 days after the event) is the 'traditional' day.

RoseAndRose · 25/11/2022 17:37

I do think that before Advent Sunday is rather too early

Hugasauras · 25/11/2022 17:38

Ours is going up tomorrow as we have Covid so aren't going anywhere and we need some festive cheer Grin

We’re not talking about winter solstice, though. We’re talking about Christmas. The Christmas tradition is for Christmas Eve, ready for Christmas Day. Anything before that is Advent.

Freeasabird76 · 25/11/2022 17:44

First weekend in December is the earliest i will go,they've gone mad here this year and loads have trimmed up super early.

Ringmaster27 · 25/11/2022 17:46

My DCs usually spend their weekends with their dad. This weekend is a rare one they are with me!! I’m excited about it, so we are doing it all together tomorrow rather than rushing to do it next Sunday evening when they come back to me.

DarkMatternix · 25/11/2022 17:48

We normally do ours the weekend before Christmas, but that's a full week this year which is a bit early. I like to buy real trees once they're reduced and that's normally around the 22nd/23rd :-)

the80sweregreat · 25/11/2022 17:49

No, it's staying in the loft
