When do you stop doing stockings ?

Mine are older teens/20’s now and I’ve always done stockings. One has moved out now, and we may not even see them Xmas day.
DH says I should still do a stocking for that child, I think not. I’d rather not spend money on it, and not have to run round looking for stuff to go in it.
‘When did you stop doing them ?

When they’ve moved out and no longer sleep here on Christmas Eve.

bbcdefg · 17/09/2022 09:44

I still do them for my adult children. We usually have a day at Christmas where we do a family meal (might be before or after the actual day) and we do those stockings and gifts then.

justtheway · 17/09/2022 09:44

I’ve come to realise that I will never be released from the tyranny of the stocking. Well maybe when they’ve got children of their own…

YesitsBess · 17/09/2022 09:45

I probably won’t stop until they have their own families!

PuttingDownRoots · 17/09/2022 09:45

Depends...
Do they live with a partner who might do a stocking?
Do they like stockings?
What are they actually doing on Christmas day?

PorkPieAndAPickledOnion · 17/09/2022 09:47

Neither I nor my brother have children, and mum has carried on doing them for us (in modified form, bag rather than sock) - we are now in our late 40s 😁

DH and SIL have also received one every year since they’ve been around. Because there are no grandchildren, we are still the kids in the family. It’s great.

DelurkingAJ · 17/09/2022 09:47

My DM still does stockings for all of us (DH and both DSs)…but she does love doing them. They’re now ‘extra Boxing Day gifts from DGM’. I moved out 20 years ago and stopped coming for Xmas 10 years ago…

badbaduncle · 17/09/2022 09:48

Everyone who sleeps in my house on Xmas eve gets a stocking. Indefinitely.

GetOffTheRoof · 17/09/2022 09:49

If you are there on Xmas Eve, you get a stocking Xmas morning.

I'm 41, I do the stockings for my parents. 😁

They asked me and DB as teens if we wanted to stop presents or stockings as they couldn't afford both. We both asked for stockings - it's the best bit!

Irishfarmer · 17/09/2022 09:49

My sister and I had them until 'santa" died. So for me 25, her 28. I'd imagine it would have kept going until we no longer spent Christmas eve there

DisplayPurposesOnly · 17/09/2022 09:51

I'm 54. If I'm with my parents for Christmas, I get a stocking...

(Our stockings have always been sweets & little things like a pencil. Plus obligatory satsuma and choc money!)

Yep. In the house.

blibblibs · 17/09/2022 09:54

Another one who does a stocking for anyone who sleeps in the house on Christmas Eve.

hulahoopqueen · 17/09/2022 09:56

Anyone who sleeps in our house on Christmas Eve night and wakes up here on Christmas Day gets a stocking.

C1N1C · 17/09/2022 09:56

I do them for my wife AND cats

BonesOfWhatYouBelieve · 17/09/2022 09:56

Tell your DH he can do the stocking if it bothers him.
If you're the one doing them, it's up to you. My mum stopped when we got to 18, my MIL does one for everyone staying Christmas Eve night, including her husband, and either her parents or her in-laws, depending on who is there.

PicaNewName · 17/09/2022 09:57

I have never done stockings.

Throwawaytoday · 17/09/2022 09:57

I stopped receiving stockings when I got married (at 34).

It was still a bit sad 😔

I agree. I’ll do them for the kids at home on Xmas eve only.

This is such a lovely thread!

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/09/2022 10:00

Mine DSCs got them last year at 17 and 14, but we’ll stop at 18.

user1474315215 · 17/09/2022 10:01

I still do stockings for my adult DC, and now for their partners too. I get so much pleasure from choosing all the little bits and pieces.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 17/09/2022 10:02

Never! Everyone gets stockings if they are here to hang them on Christmas Eve. Best bit of Christmas imo.

I love a stocking too! I get one if I'm at my parents.
Aged 40 and 3/4
