When do you stop doing stockings ?

Mine are older teens/20’s now and I’ve always done stockings. One has moved out now, and we may not even see them Xmas day.
DH says I should still do a stocking for that child, I think not. I’d rather not spend money on it, and not have to run round looking for stuff to go in it.
‘When did you stop doing them ?

I'll be doing my own stocking as is the way of it now I'm an adult. There's not much to go in it but I'll still do it.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/12/2022 23:43

If they’re sleeping here on Christmas Eve, they still get one - same as anyone else sleeping in this house, regardless of age. It’s the law here. 🎄🎅🏻

YuliaJollyberry · 20/12/2022 09:31

Everyone waking here Christmas morning gets one. Undecided whether to send to adult children when not joining us think it’ll depend if they have someone else to do one if they want to continue the tradition.

We're all adults, moved out, married or partners, kids too and my mum still does stockings for us. We'd all be gutted if she decided go stop and it's the same stockings we've had since babies.

Largethighsbadeyes · 20/12/2022 09:49

I'm late 30s, brother early 40s and we go to my parents house on boxing day. We still get our presents in a stocking (property presents not stocking filler crap)

Largethighsbadeyes · 20/12/2022 09:49

*proper not property...although that would be nice 😄

Largethighsbadeyes · 20/12/2022 09:51

@Lifesabiatch same here! She sewed them for us when we were born so not having them would feel really sad. If the presents are too big to fit she still hangs them on the fireplace and puts the presents underneath

I do a stocking for everyone, of whatever age, who is waking up in the house on
Christmas Day. I like doing them and everyone appreciates a bit of chocolate and similar things (I do make them personal to the person).

(my pathetic Christmas martyr tale is that no one ever returns the favour for me. But I’m not actually going to be a martyr about it. I’m teaching/supporting my 13 year old to do me a stocking instead. I refuse to do my own, and I have just accepted that my husband is too lazy and doesn’t care enough to reciprocate, but I can raise my son with the expectation that it’s his job to make an effort to do this stuff for the people he loves. He adores getting a stocking, so he can also learn about how nice it is to make one and see someone else made happy by it.).

We never had one growing up, never felt I missed out on anything.

for my two children, I’ve never done them. I just don’t know what to put in them.

they’re too young for cosmetics, make up etc.

postcardpuffin · 20/12/2022 10:02

I think my parents got a bit tired of doing them when we were teenagers - I definitely remember taking over the stocking buying and doing it myself for me and my siblings when I was about 15-18. I think they pretty much stopped by the time we were all 18. By late teens my siblings were out partying late on Christmas Eve, and hardly waking up before Christmas dinner time, never mind getting up for stockings 😂

A bit like Easter eggs, I think when I grew up there weren’t as many people who carried on the stockings beyond the early teen years - they were very much for kids. Nowadays stockings for everyone is much more popular!

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 20/12/2022 10:03

If you sleep in my house on Xmas eve, you get a stocking.

Mum stopped with stocking in her house when her mother died - so my 73 year old father doesn't get one since he turned 70.

HelpMeGetThrough · 20/12/2022 10:23

Our boys (20 and 15) get a stocking and always will.

I decorated the tree yesterday and I still put up the decorations they made in pre-school and reception.

Heyahun · 20/12/2022 10:25

I still get one at 34 😂😂😂

Sweets, chocolate, small toys like party bag type things, pencils, colouring books, stickers...
There's loads for younger children.

I will stop when they move out. The purpose of stockings for us have always been something to get on with so we can have a cuppa and a round of toast before main present opening. Now my kids are 18 and 21 they simply consist of fluffy socks, slightly nicer than usual shower gel stuff (rituals rather than nivea/dove), sweets, chocolate and something kike a keyring etc.
