When do you stop doing stockings ?

Mine are older teens/20’s now and I’ve always done stockings. One has moved out now, and we may not even see them Xmas day.
DH says I should still do a stocking for that child, I think not. I’d rather not spend money on it, and not have to run round looking for stuff to go in it.
‘When did you stop doing them ?

Never. I do stockings for everyone including my 81yo mum! Stockings contains the best gifts!

Whisperedew · 17/09/2022 10:04

This is ridiculous! People wear stockings at any age

shiningstar2 · 17/09/2022 10:05

We never stopped. Used to do one for DD, DM and dog. Dh did one for me so used to be 4. Now it's 9 😁. One for DD her husband and 2 kids. My mother who is now 91, DH and 2 dogs DH does one for me so 9. DD is now aged 47 so doesn't look like I'll be stopping anytime soon. If anyone else is there Christmas morning they also get a stocking.

LondonQueen · 17/09/2022 10:06

My mum still does me a stocking now along with one for DH and the kids! I think it's a nice tradition I will carry on.

I’ve come to realise that I will never be released from the tyranny of the stocking. Well maybe when they’ve got children of their own…

My mum was still doing it when we were aged between 20 and 32.

Then she died, but you may consider that's a bit extreme Grin

Moonflower12 · 17/09/2022 10:16

I still do them for my 4 ( aged 31,26,25 and 9) plus their partners as apparently they're the best bit of Christmas!!

TwoCoffeesPlease · 17/09/2022 10:23

Please don’t stop stockings unless you really have to, they really are the best bit of Christmas even when you are a grown up. I would prefer a stocking from my parents to having a “real” gift if there was a choice between the two.

My mum can’t stop doing stockings, in fact she now just does one for me, my fiancé, my brothers x2, SIL, niece and nephew, my dad and this year my other brother has a girlfriend so I guess she will get one as well - she has gone from doing 3 to doing 9 but we love them and I think she also likes doing them.

FMIL also does me a stocking when she does them for my fiancé and his brother (and I guess his girlfriend this year too).

Both mums keep saying they will stop but they never do!

I’m 30 btw and have my own house and don’t always see my parents Xmas day as we alternate.

2pinkginsplease · 17/09/2022 10:25

Still do them for my kids who will be 19 and 21 by Christmas. My mum does them for all her grandchildren and the eldest is 25!

DenholmElliot1 · 17/09/2022 10:28

Tell your DH to do it if he thinks your ds should have one.

What's the bet he won't bother though.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 17/09/2022 10:28

I thought it was going to be an age/medical thing about elasticated support tights! 🤪

ReeseWitherfork · 17/09/2022 10:28

I don’t think I’ve had a stocking since I moved out at 18. I stayed with my parents for a few months around the age of 21/22ish and definitely didn’t get a stocking then. No hard feelings here!

Crikey that’s an extreme way of getting out of it!

Dammitthisisshit · 17/09/2022 10:30

My mum stopped doing me a stocking before I left home and replaced it with a different present, like earrings or something that cost the same as a stocking. At the time I thought it was a good idea. Though now I get a bit nostalgic and think it’s almost a shame she didn’t continue as I’d love a stocking now even though I have children myself! (I would never say this of course!)

fdkc · 17/09/2022 10:32

I don't think I'll ever stop doing them. I have one adult and two older teens. I do find it more tedious now trying to find things to go into them for their ages.

I'm sure I'll start for the grandkids too when they come along!

OxfordDog · 17/09/2022 10:33

Up to you. I've never had a stocking and wish someone would make me one. But whatever you decide, particularly if you decide to stop, make sure you communicate it in advance so that your child isn't expecting one!

Bernadinetta · 17/09/2022 10:34

I’m a 37 year old married mother of 2 and my mum still does me a stocking every year. I get stuff like a toothbrush, a shower gel, bag of chocolate coins, sachet of hot chocolate, socks, and a clementine in the toe. It’s the same knitted stocking I’ve had for Christmas since I was a toddler.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 17/09/2022 10:35

Growing up I think my stocking stopped when I was around 18, stockings were definitely seen as something for kids not adults though.

My dd is now 16yo and I will keep doing a stocking for a while longer but not indefinitely.

TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 17/09/2022 10:35

I didn't do one for DH last year and I don't think he noticed. I think I might tell him to do the ones for the kids this year - I find it hard to think of things to put in a stocking without it coating a fortune. And then having to think of one or two things to put under the tree as well - I don't have the head space for this

I think it’s about changing the way that stockings are done. I’ve said upthread my mum now does 9 so there is usually only about 6 things in each and some things ger doubled up eg. The same slipper socks for me and SIL in different patterns, the same set of screw drivers for Db and my fiancé

Gassylady · 17/09/2022 10:36

@KangarooKenny if it is that important to your DH perhaps he should do it for all stocking receivers this year.
To answer your question we have stopped when the kids no longer believed in Father Christmas and it became a bit of a chore to find stuff that was genuinely needed or wanted and fitted in the stockings.

SusanPerbCallMeSue · 17/09/2022 10:38

One are age 15-23 and I tried to stop doing stockings and they were not happy. I'm not doing them once they've left home though. Or maybe I'll stop when the youngest is 18.

I think the stockings are their favourite part though, even though I always put the same thing in every year, so it's not surprise. A pack of socks, a chocolate orange, a small game or puzzle type thing, a satsuma (that only DS2 eats), chocolate coins and candy canes.

Now I'm thinking I could just do that for them forever and for all their children, if they ever have any, and not have to think too much about buying presents. Grin

eldorado02 · 17/09/2022 10:39

I’m 41 and still get one if I’m with my family at Christmas!

Do you want me to make you a stocking? 🙂

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 17/09/2022 10:41

My DM said it would just be for people who were here in Christmas Eve and woke up here, thinking she'd be able to cut down.

What actually happened was that DSis now brings her husband to stay on Christmas Eve. Grin

eldorado02 · 17/09/2022 10:41

But we don’t do tree presents anymore, apart from for my daughter (only grandchild/niece), so a stocking is instead of rather than in addition to larger presents. And we each do one for another, so it’s not my Mum doing all of them apart from her own - that shit stopped a few years ago!
