When do you stop doing stockings ?

Mine are older teens/20’s now and I’ve always done stockings. One has moved out now, and we may not even see them Xmas day.
DH says I should still do a stocking for that child, I think not. I’d rather not spend money on it, and not have to run round looking for stuff to go in it.
‘When did you stop doing them ?

Mine still have them. They are in there 30"s

NoDairyNoProblem · 17/09/2022 10:43

I do one for anyone sleeping in my house on Christmas Eve.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 17/09/2022 10:47

My family deliver stockings for each other so that everyone gets one. Youngest sibling is 33, I'm 46, oldest stocking recipient is 86. Everyone is in on the 'secret' but everyone gets a stocking without knowing exactly how it arrived in place on Christmas morning. We live all around the world. It will never stop. We are obsessed.

gogohmm · 17/09/2022 10:48

I will this year even though they won't all be with me, we'll celebrate when possible

Donelurking · 17/09/2022 10:51

Never

Shortkiwi · 17/09/2022 10:51

My 3, now in their twenties, living away but always home for Xmas, decided they didn’t want stockings any more. I was gutted! Now we do a £50 secret Santa with everyone’s wishes entered through an app!

Neverendingmindfuck · 17/09/2022 10:52

I have never stopped.
I only have one child (adult 29) and 2 gkids)
I do stockings for each of them.
I hand made them, they contain mostly the same things every year.
(Although I'm starting to wish I'd made them smaller..... 😂)

Gr33ngr33ngr4ss · 17/09/2022 10:53

I do them for my mum and MIL and for my gran til she died! As well as the kids.

It's as much for me as them! I see little things all year round

abovedecknotbelow · 17/09/2022 10:55

If we are sleeping at my parents on Christmas Eve I still get one, I'm 45!

YesitsBess · 17/09/2022 10:55

@ElizabethinherGermanGarden I love that! One of mine will be in the States this Christmas and I’ll be damned if I don’t get her a stocking over somehow.

My father once smuggled an entire (fake) Christmas tree over to The Gambia because he worried he might not be able to find one there. We still have no idea how and I will never ask!

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 17/09/2022 10:57

When they move out.
though if they’re staying for Christmas they’ll get one until I stop doing them for the others or they have their own family etc.

VioletCharlotte · 17/09/2022 11:19

I've been wondering this. DC are 23 and 21. DS1 lives with his GF...last year I ended up doing a stocking for her as well! I keep thinking about stopping them, but can't bring myself to do it. I do quite enjoy thinking about what to get them, hate wrapping it all up though!

mamatoTails · 17/09/2022 11:30

I never had one growing up, but I do them for my children.
For me; they are for children.
I will probably stop once they get to 18.

EspeciallyDivided · 17/09/2022 11:37

My parents stopped mid to late teens which was fine, it would have been a bit weird having them as adults. I did start doing one for DH and him for me when we had the DCs but neither of us are hugely enthusiastic about it, we prefer doing everything as tree presents. We'll keep it going for a bit longer I guess. The teens still like theirs. We've never done satsumas though, I only realised it was a thing a few years ago.

Feathersandothers · 17/09/2022 11:39

Not until I’m dead!

MrsGhastlyCrumb · 17/09/2022 12:06

Never. Everyone in the house, including the dog, gets one.

Stomacharmeleon · 17/09/2022 12:15

Everyone gets on... we even send them to DS who lives abroad. We just have a rule that if you want one the next year the stocking comes back (they do sharpish)

justtheway · 17/09/2022 09:44

I’ve come to realise that I will never be released from the tyranny of the stocking. Well maybe when they’ve got children of their own…

This!

DD1 now has DGS & I will be replacing her stocking with his this year.

Greensleeves · 17/09/2022 12:46

Never. We do them for each other, the kids, my dad and the cats, and we also do one for my Dad's partner who spends Christmas with her DD and then joins us on Boxing Day. I love stockings, they're an art form. I love choosing little personal inexpensive bits for each person.

vroom321 · 17/09/2022 14:30

I've never do them. Ours are just for decoration.

Coffeaddict · 17/09/2022 15:03

My mum stopped doing them when I was a teen. At that age I just wanted money to buy vans and clothes and other stuff that I wouldn't have trusted my mum to buy because she didn't know what was cool 😂

I think once the youngest has outgrown the idea of santa it's perfectly reasonable to stop

Lalanbaba · 17/09/2022 15:25

I love them, and I will still do them for whoever spends here xmas eve night

CottonHeadedNinnyMug · 17/09/2022 16:45

Father Christmas still does one for everyone. What is this stopping malarkey of which you speak ?!? 🤔

CottonHeadedNinnyMug · 17/09/2022 16:47

In reality - parent does a stocking for the child until the child has a partner and then the partner takes over...

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 17/09/2022 16:49

DM still does one for me and I'm late 30s. She also does one for DGM and she's 96!
