When do you stop doing stockings ?

Mine are older teens/20’s now and I’ve always done stockings. One has moved out now, and we may not even see them Xmas day.
DH says I should still do a stocking for that child, I think not. I’d rather not spend money on it, and not have to run round looking for stuff to go in it.
‘When did you stop doing them ?

My parents stopped it for us when we went to secondary school so about 11, I think I will keep it for a bit longer for my children, its a sweet tradition

PeanutCat1 · 18/09/2022 16:33

We still get a stocking every year, I started doing my mum a stocking a few years ago so now we all get them.

recklessgran · 18/09/2022 17:24

5 DD's, DGS and DSIL all get one ages ranging from 45 down to 23. I won't stop them since I love doing them and they love getting them. I tailor them to each individual and they all love that I put so much thought into getting things especially for them. The budget is very ouchy but I can afford it and Christmas is a big deal here . We don't make much fuss about birthdays so Christmas is the big one in our family. Started in August and will keep going until November 27th when DH and I go on our winter holiday. Always try to have everything more or less done by then.

Cherrysherbet · 18/09/2022 20:48

I stopped my older two last year (19 and 24!). It just got too much. Trying to find things to put in them was a waste of money and so time consuming. My dd11 is the only one who gets a stocking now.

GettingStuffed · 18/09/2022 21:17

My son is 34 before Christmas and he still gets one, my other two have spouses who do their stockings so they get some small presents instead. DH usually does me one and I get him some smaller presents which we open in bed before we get up Usually while I give him industrial strength coffee

ChimpyChops · 18/09/2022 22:05

I got one until I had my own child, so 25.
I think I will do the same for my boys . Its is my eldest's favourite part of Christmas.

Ambertonix · 19/09/2022 12:21

My 'kids' are 27 and 30 and neither live at home. Since they have been teenagers they have always preferred to have money instead of lots of gifts. They still get a stocking every year though because i think they still need something to open on the day! I usually do pjs (not xmas themed), socks, sweets, selection box and a book maybe. They roll their eyes but i know they love it. They also get a chocolate advent calendar every year too!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/09/2022 11:46

Everybody sleeping under our roof on Christmas Eve gets a stocking, regardless of age.
It’s the law!

For adult guests it might be just one nice new sock with the other sock and a few bits stuffed in - it’s surprising what you can stuff into a sock - but they have to have one, on principle. 🎄🎅

MedievalNun · 21/09/2022 11:49

Yeah. I tried to stop the stockings last year (DD then 20). Apparently they are an essential part of christmas. Friends who join us every year also disappointed. Looks like I'm doing them again this year 😀

CamdenLurker · 22/09/2022 15:11

my 4 dc - all teens and older, say the stocking is the very best part of Christmas, I always put one together for them and also my mum.

I don't think I'll stop until they have their own children.

I think it can be as simple or difficult as you want it to be, a bag of chocolate coins, satsuma, some nuts and a pair of socks or a fully bespoke stocking tailored to the individual.

This year I'll put one together for both ds1 and ds2's girlfriends as well, so 7 in total, my four each have a smallish stocking that they've had since they were tiny, I need to try and find something of a similar size so I'm not spending a fortune on filling a huge Christmas Stocking, some of them I've seen are more like a sock shaped sack!

Isonthecase · 22/09/2022 15:22

Everyone in the house gets a stocking on Christmas morning if there are kids there. Some of my fondest memories of childhood Christmases are opening stockings with elderly relatives! Might be different with no kids involved.

ToThineOwnSelfBe · 22/09/2022 15:26

Both my dad, and my in-laws do them for whoever will be there on Christmas day, and we're all some variation of grown/married/have kids. One Christmas we did stockings for the kids and for each other at home and then we saw both families (although not all on the same day) so we all got three stockings that year. It's one of the highlights of DS1's life (he's only 10 😂)!

listsandbudgets · 23/09/2022 15:55

It's changed round - I do my mum a stocking and take pleasure in doing so

I think she stopped for me when I was about 25

TheChosenTwo · 24/09/2022 20:40

I stopped getting one when I was 7 and worked out the truth about Father Christmas.
I figure that stockings were only for children as they were from FC and once you were old enough to know about him not existing then whoever was responsible for actually sorting your stocking out was relieved of their duties!
I’m quite shocked at so many adults still getting stockings 😱
my eldest dd is 18 and said she still wants a stocking, I thought this would be coming to an end soon!
only kids get them in my house, dh and I have enough to do at Christmas without filling more stockings with more presents - I struggle to think of what to get people as it is without them having to think of more things 😳

BigFatLiar · 24/09/2022 20:46

The girls (and husbands) get token presents but they still get stockings with bits and bobs in them.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 24/09/2022 21:02

When you die.

Not before.

My Mum still does my sister and I stockings in our 40s

My Mum did her Mum a stocking when her Mum was widowed and stayed with us at Christmas.

Some of the joke gifts, and her reactions, are some of my parents best Christmas memories.

When they’ve moved out and no longer sleep here on Christmas Eve.

This!

MothsAndWaspsAreUsefulPollinators · 24/09/2022 23:35

For us, it fizzled out during my children's teens, no-one seemed bothered. Anyhow, you don't need to do a stocking for an adult who has flown the nest and may not being coming over. (Young adults coming home from uni or elsewhere to spend a family Christmas, might still warrant a stocking if you all want to do it, depending.) You can still do stockings for your slightly younger ones even if you are not doing one for the older one.

For Easter eggs we set an age limit, which meant we had younger ones getting them and older ones not. But we did do it in advance.

There not from Father Christmas here, they are just tradition in memory of St. Nick.

Same as St. Paddies day or Valentine etc...

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 25/09/2022 14:45

I will stop doing a stocking for my dd when she tells me that she wants me to stop, or when I die.

Stockings have always been my favourite bit of Christmas. I was absolutely gutted when my mum stopped doing them for me and dsis when we were young adults. I told her that I didn't mind in the slightest, as I didn't want to be all entitled about it, but the truth is, Christmas has never been the same since!

EveryLeafSpeaksBlissToMe · 26/09/2022 15:33

I will always do one for my DC and DH and when they have serious partners I’ll do it for them.

I think I make nice stockings and they are appreciated.

Ladymama12 · 09/10/2022 10:43

If you don't want to do it i don't think you should. It shouldn't be a chore.
Ill do for my children till they move out- if ever! and if they're at home for xmas ill also do them one including grandchildren one day Possibly... As long as its appreciated. In our home we don't open presents till 5pm after dinner Christmas night so stockings are lovely to have in the morning before breakfast. This year I've made a stocking for a friend and will fill it. I won't see her at xmas but will send it as she mentioned that not once in 30 years has she had one dispite doing for her family. I think that's really sad.

Ladymama12 · 09/10/2022 10:45

@MrsBennetsPoorNerves i feel your pain. Wishing u a merry Christmas this year 🙏🏽🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄🎁

ZeroFuchsGiven · 09/10/2022 10:49

My kids are all older teens and adults now and I still do them. I started doing them about 5 years ago for my inlaws in their 70s and the joy on their face is great, like little kids again!
