Best and worst Christmas films?

muldersspeedos · 28/11/2021 22:00

I love Home Alone (1 and 2) and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Not keen on the Polar Express although I want to love it. I think it's to do with the ticket blowing away and it being inevitable and it makes me twitchy.

What are yours?

OP posts:
MuguetRose · 30/11/2021 23:56

I like to watch Deck the Halls, National Lampoon, Scrooge (70s) and 90s Little women each year
TV I like is Royle Family- The New Sofa, Joe's Crackers and Barbara's Old Ring
Worst TV would be Mrs Brown's Boys
Can't think of Worst Film

MuguetRose · 30/11/2021 23:57

I like the Nativity films too

Enough4me · 01/12/2021 00:07

Best: The Snowman / Arthur Christmas

Worst: Elf (because the rest of my family subject me to it every year several times and talk through it on how good it is as know it well)

evilharpy · 01/12/2021 10:34

Die Hard is not a Christmas film. It is THE Christmas film Grin absolutely love it.

I love Santa Claus The Movie but nobody else ever seems to like it.

I can't really think of a worst one but there are loads of rom com type ones on Netflix etc that I haven't seen because I hate rom coms. Like The Christmas Prince.

We watched Holiday Inn last night on Now TV for the first time expecting good wholesome Fred and Bing fun. That has NOT aged well, we were genuinely shocked at the blackface which we had no idea about. Apparently it's cut from most versions nowadays.

My all time favourite (Not a big screen release but a BBC film) is the Flint Street Nativity. We watch it all together every year and I absolutely love it. Yesterday in the car one of the children starting singing "ring out those Bells tonight, Bethlehem, Bethlehem" and I couldn't stop laughing. Very funny and poignant. Lots of others I love but no particular hates.
@8misskitty8

OK, why is it a Christmas Film?

I say..if Die Hard is a Christmas film - then so is Batman Returns and Gremlins! They're all Christmas adjacent films.. set around Christmas time but not really about Christmas.
If the company hadn't been having a Christmas party then none of the film would have happened. Plus, Willis wouldn't have been trying to sort things with his wife if it wasn't Christmas. It is totally a Christmas movie.

Yewtown · 01/12/2021 11:00

@poorbuthappy

The worst is Netflix Father Christmas is back.

Please tell me someone agrees with me. I can't find anyone who's seen it and has taken against it as well!
Starting to think it's me... Grin

I couldn't agree more. It was excruciatingly dreadful. The acting was dire especially Caroline.
BigFatLiar · 01/12/2021 11:05

Christmas Carol (especially the Patrick Stewart version)
The Bishops Wife with Cary Grant

Heartofglass12345 · 01/12/2021 20:28

@MuguetRose I love the new sofa! All this reclining's wearing me out Grin

MuguetRose · 01/12/2021 20:34

It's brilliant Grin

CactusLemonSpice · 01/12/2021 20:38

Best:
Christmas with the Kranks
Jingle all the way
Pretty much any version of a Christmas Carol
The holiday

Worst:
I actually don't love love actually

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 02/12/2021 09:00

I love so many Christmas films, my favourites would have to be miracle on 34th St, Elf, Arthur Christmas and Christmas chronicles. Me and DH always watch bad santa when the kids are in bed too!

Worst... a hard one but has to be a random purchase called Bone Alone. Same story as home alone but with a dog, not rude like my DH thought when I told him the name 🤣

Whispers into the thread... ive never seen die hard so can't judge on its christmassyness!

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 02/12/2021 09:01

Oh and im not a fan of the snowman!

jamie85 · 02/12/2021 09:50

Best is Scrooge 1935 Seymour Hicks as the lead. Was on TPTV last year. Also Christmas Carrol with Bloke from Star Trek

WORST The Muppets

MistyGreenAndBlue · 02/12/2021 09:56

The best Christmas film is Die Hard. Definitely a Christmas film

Worst is The Polar Express. So boring and creepy. Those bloody elves at the end look like they're at a Nuremberg rally. Gives me the heebies.

Sunbeams09 · 02/12/2021 10:02

Best - miracle on 34th street. Also love jingle all the way!

Worst - the grinch. Just never been a fan. And hone alone 4.

I actually didn’t mind last Christmas Blush

ZimZamZoom · 02/12/2021 10:05

waves at @evilharpy , my favourite Christmas film ever is Santa Claus The Movie!! I have never even found anyone else who has watched it, let alone has an opinion on it Grin
John Lithgow is the perfect baddie. I watch it every year.

Worst: like several other pp, I can't abide the made-for-TV, schmaltzy rom-"com" types

KeepingTheWormsQuiet · 02/12/2021 10:12

I agree that Father Christmas is Back (on Netflix) was pretty terrible.

Two things particularly annoyed me.

 1. It was obviously filmed in the Summer. All the trees were covered in leaves. When they went outside the sun was summer sun and the women in skimpy dresses gave no indication of being cold. No condensation when they spoke. Putting on a few Christmas jumpers does not make it feel like Christmas.
 1. The father didn't see his daughters for 27 years and this turned out to be all his ex wife's and brother's fault and he was suddenly completely blameless. Sure be heartbroken for a year or two, but not contacting his supposedly loved children for 27 years IS NOT OK.
Lifewith · 02/12/2021 11:19

@00100001

Die Hard isn't a Christmas film. It's a film that happens at Christmas time...not the same thing!
It def is a Christmas film!
Lifewith · 02/12/2021 11:21

Worst is the Holiday!
Absolutely terrible. So disappointed

GivememyowlbackSandra · 02/12/2021 11:26

Santa Claus the Movie here too for best Christmas film. Loved it since I was a child. Glad to have found my people!!!
Don't have a worst. The part in Love actually where Emma Thompson realises her hubby bought a gift for someone else is the most gut wrenching sensation I have ever experienced watching a film, makes me sob!!!!

sHREDDIES19 · 02/12/2021 11:29

I love Christmas with the Cranks, The Grinch and The Holiday to name a few.

AdmiralCain · 02/12/2021 11:41

Top Five:
Die Hard (and die hard 2)
Batman returns
Scrooged
Gremlins
Lethal weapon.

Thank you very much

Birdsnesting · 02/12/2021 11:41

Worst is The Polar Express. So boring and creepy. Those bloody elves at the end look like they're at a Nuremberg rally.

Grin They totally do!

I like Arthur Christmas, mostly for Bill Nighy's Grand-Santa-as-Steptoe, and I actually have a sneaking liking for the first Christmas Chronicles film, mainly for the bit where Little Steven turns up in the holding cell. The second one is god-awful, with the evil elf that turns into a stroppy New Zealander teenager, and Goldie Hawn after so much surgery and fillers she can barely move her face.

BirdyBee · 02/12/2021 11:45

I love Four Christmas and Daddys Home 2, not a fan of the polar express!
