My Dad wants to get my Mum a new iPad. I've never had one set and know absolutely nothing about them, but he's asked me to find one for her. So, erm, help?! She uses it for games, internet and watches Sky/Disney on it. Which one do I look for? What's the difference, other than size? Are refurbs worth looking at? And lastly, any bargains out there?!

A previous poster said that your Mum would need to get a SIM and pay monthly if she wants to use her iPad away from home.

Although I have been told that’s one way, there are many places where you can use their free wifi, eg many shops and cafes, some Air BnBs, on buses and trains and even in the streets in the town centre where I live. That’s what I do, so I’ve never paid anything after the initial cost. If you give her the wifi code she can use it at your house, too.

(I understand iPhones work in the same way, so you don’t have to use your paid-for data.)

A friend bought a new iPad recently because she said hers was so old she couldn’t download the free upgrades any more. Mine is 7 years old and I haven’t had that problem, but it’s something to bear in mind if you’re considering buying a refurbished one.

Sorry if this is stating the obvious. I rarely use a mobile phone and didn’t know how this all works until I got my iPad.

Great advice @Silversilverstreet, I had wondered about the SIM thing, but then thought she goes on my Wifi, so she can just hope on wherever allows, surely.
@Wonderfulstuff I had thought that about a Mini being more portable, but like your Mum, she loves her games and it might be a bit too much of a reduction in size. I think I'm going to try and get a deal on the iPad 9 for her.
