Unexpected hit presents

What random presents have you given or received this yeah that have gone down really well? I got DH a beanie hat with an LED torch on the front for going into the loft as we don’t have a light up there, and he can never find his torch (and when he does it’s out of charge, and he ends up using the torch on his phone). It was super cheap and a bit of a last minute random thing, but he loves it! It’s really bright, and we’ve already both used it loads for going out into the garden to get things from the garage fridge. I especially love it as I used to hate going into the garage when it was dark and groping around for the light switch....

Anyone else got something similar?

DS15 was over the moon with a tea bag squeezer. Grin

Whattheactual20201 · 28/12/2020 02:06

Haha I was very confused
DD 7 had begged I mean begged Santa for
An Xbox one, present pet and an American girl doll which she got all 3 anyway so my cousins had sent down Christmas cards in DD Christmas card there was an evee Pokemon card which Their DC has put in
I am not joking with you my DD was hysterically happy 🤣🤣
She had never ever ever mentioned Pokemon to me before I’ve never seen her watch / play or do anything remotely Pokemon.
When someone asked her what she got for Xmas the only thing she mentioned was this dam Pokemon card 🤣

Kljnmw3459 · 28/12/2020 02:29

Ds got a nerf gun and both ds and dh love it....

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 28/12/2020 02:35

A fake oodie for ds12. It was £12 from amazon. He basically opened it, put it on and i had to just about rip it off him today to give it a wash. Didnt even think he would use it.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 28/12/2020 02:38

Just tried to go on and order another one and they've bumped up the price to 36 quid! He can manage with one for now 🤣

MrsDrSpencerReid · 28/12/2020 03:11

DD14, an over the door mirror that has Hollywood lights around it and opens up to reveal loads of jewellery storage. She’s thrilled to bits with it, spent Christmas morning arranging all her jewellery in it and keeps opening it up and sighing in satisfaction at everything all laid out Grin That, and checking herself out in her new bikini in the mirror Grin The Oodie went down a treat too.

Her birthday was a few days before Christmas and I got her a Harry Potter build a bear with Slytherin robes - when she unwrapped it she gasped and started sobbing! Got a better reaction than the new phone which was her main present! She’s had a rough year with her mental health and it seems to have brought her so much comfort Smile

DS11 is lego obsessed so it was always going to be a winner, but the Super Mario lego was way better than expected and he hasn’t stopped playing with it!

Gleps · 28/12/2020 04:13

@ramblingsonthego how old is your dd? Sounds like something my dd would like and I’m desperately looking for presents for her birthday next week.

Don’t suppose you have a link?

scrivette · 28/12/2020 04:16

DS1's favourite gift is a black tracksuit from Amazon, he had asked for one but I have no idea what's so special about it.

Surprise hit were the gingerbread man and elf teddies I got for £1.99 from The Card Factory as a last minute stocking filler, the DC love them.

fantasmasgoria1 · 28/12/2020 05:04

We got our cat the flipity fish. I find it really funny but at first our cat looked at it with distain! She will get used to it!

Imsayingnothing · 28/12/2020 08:08

@InsertRudeWord definitely! I've already took note of the boxing ball thing for ds, the fake oodies for both Dds and I'm interested in the lock picking kit for Ds as well Xmas Blush

Best present in our house has been a cuddly super soft koala that their auntie in Australia sent, one of my daughters loves it, it goes everywhere and she's named it keelan!

The other present which has been loved by all daughters is the lol carpool coupe, which is surprisingly quite heavy and it would seem (so far) quite robust, it's been played with a lot.

But genuinely everything was very well appreciated and they seem to love it all.

davekim · 28/12/2020 08:22

DD cried with delight when she found a pair of socks with sushi on them, in her stocking.
DS's all loved a box that you can record a short message on, and when you open the box, it plays the message. A friend sold them to me years ago when she was moving, I forgot about them, but found them last week. They absolutely love them.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 28/12/2020 08:30

The cheap-as-chips 3D Snakes and Ladders I picked up last minute from Argos has been a huge hit with DS (6). Played it 3 times a day since Christmas. He is also very excited by the magnetic dartboard his Grandad got him.

It is similar to this one. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B082YQQBPX/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabc_zEX5Fb1GD92T3?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Ours was called DIY garden. Honestly it looked rubbish, and it is the one present that she has played with over and over and over again for hours.

@MarmiteWine

The tin of smoked paprika I bought for my sister! I now also need to buy one for my mum.

And if anyone can suggest any other foodstuffs that come in fantastic tins and readily available in bricks and mortar shops then I'm all ears.

Tkmax or home sense do gorgeous tins of olive oil.
HairyToity · 28/12/2020 11:06

Children and me love playing Bird Bingo.

We also had great fun yesterday with a remote controlled glider.

oneofthose · 28/12/2020 11:37

@stanski can I ask which one? My dad would love something to look at all the old negatives but don’t know which device to buy him

lucysmam · 28/12/2020 12:10

@MrsDrSpencerReid where's the jewellery storage mirror from? That sounds like something dd1 would make use of :)

ReindeerHooves2020 · 28/12/2020 12:50

I'm loving reading this thread. Not the best Christmas (I have covid) or year. The thought of kids playing with their loved toys is a spirit lifter Smile

My kids (10 and 2) loved a box of ready made and make your own slime. They slapped it on the table, mixed it, chucked glitter in it - great fun!

@stanski I'd also love to know about the negatives to digital machine- what's it called? I wouldn't even know what brand to search for. We lost mum this year and have so few actual photos but I bet we could dig out a tonne of negatives. What a fabulous idea.

newlabelwriter · 28/12/2020 13:13

Wildlife camera, only cost about £40 and was very much a last minute gift to even them out. We've had loads of fun seeing what's been filmed in the garden overnight (a fox and mostly next door's cats ;)

milkysmum · 28/12/2020 13:22

Smart bulbs for the kids bedrooms. Honestly they bloody love them!!

ajandjjmum · 28/12/2020 13:53

oneofthose

Was my immediate thought for DB!

We’ve just had a zoom with friends who have a child the same age as our DC - he excitedly informed us he got a Spider-Man towel for Xmas, when we asked what his best present was!

DD13, (almost) last minute personalised chopsticks!

CuddlyDudley71 · 28/12/2020 23:45

@Whatayear1234- it's the teen equivalent of the big toy cardboard box!!

MarmiteWine · 29/12/2020 00:29

@Jeremyironseverything
Thank you, that's where the paprika came from!
