A meal out in the nearest City when the lights are lit.

I think the lanterns at Chester Zoo have also been postponed, or we may have done that.

Lovemusic33 · 27/08/2020 20:48

Lots of places have light displays such as national trust places? We usually go to Longleat for the lights.

We might get a real tree this year just so we can make a day of picking one 😂.

We have a few pop up outdoor (drive in) cinemas so we might do this.

HumphreyGoodmanswife · 27/08/2020 20:53

@treeeeemendous
The above picture isn't mine but similar I found online. I don't bother with bows, just ribbon to hang it from the door.

@MarshmallowManiac love a few Christmas baking sessions. Marshmallows are good fun to make too and the obligatory gingerbread house covered in diabetes inducing amounts of sweets. We also have a mould from Lakeland which makes 2 3D reindeer and a big chocolate sleigh (which we fill with yet another box of chocs Blush)

MarshmallowManiac · 28/08/2020 16:39

Love the wreath Humphrey. Where do you buy the wreath and the ribbons, and how do you attach the sweets? Sorry for all the questions.
Must try this I love marshmallows hence the name Grin Going to head to Lakeland.

Also want to get our own tree Lovemusic33 and make a day of it. We also have outdoor cinemas near us too.

Would love to go to a zoo to see the lights, have a local one too so will check it out Smile

@MarshmallowManiac the wreath is just a wire florists ring (2 layers). I just use strips of paper raffia ribbon (about 3" long) to tie each choc from its twisted wrapper end to the metal ring. Both bought online v cheaply. Quite frankly it can be a tad tiresome, takes hours!

We love getting the Christmas tree from a local Forestry Commission place, amazing smells in the woods, wrapped up in hats, scarves, warm boots, sometimes it's even snowed. Then back home with cheesy Christmas music on in the car to hot chocs with Baileys in for me

.. Ah, I love Christmas Grin

MarshmallowManiac · 28/08/2020 18:24

Thank you for all the tips Humphrey, am definitely going to try it. Grin
I love Christmas too [santa]

@HumphreyGoodmanswife @MarshmallowManiac just thought I would say that Tesco have all tubs of heroes, roses, quality street and celebrations for £4 each at the moment. Bought some today ready to make wreaths, now I have to try and resist eating them!

MarshmallowManiac · 30/08/2020 20:32

Thanks Treeeeemendous* will head down there, don't know if I'll be able to resist though, am sitting here eating sweets at the moment. Grin

Not sure if I should thank you for that or not treeeeemendous . Trying to rein it in with the chocs atm and failing miserably BlushWink

MarshmallowManiac · 01/09/2020 17:04

Thinking of bringing my gang to an local outdoor ice skating rink beginning of December, accompanied by Hot Choc of course [santa]

OP posts:
HumphreyGoodmanswife · 01/09/2020 21:36

Do you think they'll be open this year? I really hope so. My DCs both have ice skating lessons and are pretty brilliant not that I'm biased . Their rink has just opened this week for high level skater lessons only, but that's indoors so fingers crossed the outdoor winter ones will all be open by December 🤞

Bah Humbug early trigger warning:

www.standard.co.uk/go/london/attractions/hyde-park-winter-wonderland-2020-cancelled-a4538356.html

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland 2020 cancelled as coronavirus repercussions continue

However as child is still young (slightly off topic as not teenage as such) and not too old yet to understand fact from fiction I am going to double down as a one off special once in a young childhood lifetime Covid physical and mental challenge survival treat to Lapland Finland. So The Father Christmas, snow, Northern Lights, igloos, magical forest and husky snow drawn adventures! That’s the game plan anyway unless Covid also hits the Artic Circle too!! Ho ho ho the only good thing remaining for Brexshit Covid 2020 so far (hopefully!)

MarshmallowManiac · 03/09/2020 18:52

I really hope so Humphrey we need a bit of jolliness this year I feel. Smile

Oh no Res would have loved to go to Hyde Park. We went to Lapland with the DC and it was magical, you'll love it. Smile

Do keep an eye on what's happening locally, even if it's not the usual. I'm part of the the which organises our town lights switch-on. We're waiting for word from the council at the moment about what they're thinking but in the meantime we're brainstorming loads of alternative ideas. Even if we can't do our usual parade/market/entertainment we're determined that there will be something!

MarshmallowManiac · 03/09/2020 20:34

Love local switch ons, we couple them with Christmas Hot Chocs. Hoping some local Christmas markets will still be on, but like you we will find something festive. [santa]

HumphreyGoodmanswife · 03/09/2020 22:58

We definitely do all deserve a bit of fun after this year Marshmallow.

We're like you though.. I spend months trawling Pinterest for ideas for bucket lists every season, will still find plenty to do this year 🎅

MarshmallowManiac · 03/09/2020 23:39

They have some good Christmas bucket list on Pinterest don't they Humphrey, have a feeling I will be searching through those tomorrow. Grin Think I'm going to go searching for some Christmas magazines for ideas too, love a good Christmas mooch. [santa]

It's going to be quiet.

We are definitely having an at home Christmas. I hope they'll be cooking more and that we'll be playing more games together. Time to dust off backgammon and try to remember the rules!

It'll be different but fine.

OP posts:
SallySeven · 04/09/2020 22:19

I do not have space for more than one monopoly game in the house, lol! I was thinking more of cards as we play card games on summer hols.

I think a winter barbecue night be a hit, they like sorting that themselves if I do the shopping.

I am thinking of inflicting a bit of Bible reading on mine. (Because of all the services that are bound to be cancelled by school!) They'll roll their eyes but hey, it's a captive audience!

MarshmallowManiac · 04/09/2020 22:26

Think my DC would love a Christmas card game Sally, we could always tempt them with food Grin I think the eye rolling I would get would be more than I could bear Grin we can just about get them to services at Christmas and Easter. Smile
When we have a Christmas bbq I think I will put them in charge of cocktails Grin

OP posts:
SallySeven · 04/09/2020 23:35

Funny you say about cocktails , I have fond memories of mixing cocktails at Christmas as a teen!

Maybe I'll buy a bottle of angostora bitters and a shaker!
