I agree with the poster that said teenage years are the right time to get them to help with the day. It really makes them feel like they are being treated like adults and they take pride in their contribution.

  • going to get the tree, picking it out, putting it up (excellent for stronger and taller teens).
  • putting lights on and decorating the tree
  • putting up outside lights
  • helping with shopping and menu planning
  • we try and outdo each other with inventive wrapping
  • I like to make each one responsible for part of the meal. This doesn’t have to be too onerous. It could be pouring drinks, filling bowls with crisps, setting out the cheese course etc
  • do get their ideas too. At Christmas our teach us some of the games they play with their friends
  • making a Christmas playlist of favourite songs
MarshmallowManiac · 18/08/2020 21:11

Definitely agree Emily, will really try and get them more involved this year. I want to got and get the tree with them, and encourage them to help us putting lights outside, and get them to help with the day itself. I think that even if they don't realise it they will enjoy it more. Smile

@TenCornMaidens I love love love One Night Warewolf, as does my teen DC and friends.

Have played it with 15 scouts for hours.

We are a family of 3 so we don't get the opportunity to play very often, but always have a great time when we do.

MarshmallowManiac · 18/08/2020 22:32

Thanks Chaotic, you've convinced me. Smile

Gathering greenery and making swags for bannister, fireplace, mirrors or table decoration or wreath for the door goes down well with my teens who are a bit arty

MarshmallowManiac · 18/08/2020 22:52

That sounds great Cankles but wouldn't know where to start, any advice gratefully received Smile

To be honest we need to wait and see. Food and beer festivals have already restarted here so Christmas markets are a possibility. Still planning Christmas concerts at work

MarshmallowManiac · 18/08/2020 22:59

I really hope we get to go to Christmas markets Minnie as I love the whole atmosphere and anticipation for Christmas Smile

Placemarking for later on the year. Have no ideas but need some!!!

missyB1 · 19/08/2020 17:55

@Cancklesforankles is the Scrawl game straightforward t play? Ds is 11 and gives up very quickly if something is a bit complicated! This game does sound good fun though! I have older boys in their 20s as well, so this could be a laugh for us of us.

Canklesforankles · 19/08/2020 20:54

Here’s a real example from our family. It starts top left and goes across if that makes sense. Must have been five of us playing. I guess six would be perfect as you would end on a guess but this really made us laugh anyway.

You all read a different clue and do a drawing, pass it on, they write a guess, pass it on, they do a drawing, pass it on and then person guesses.

In each round everyone is busy either guessing or drawing so no waiting around for your turn which works well if you have someone younger.

It is funny and straightforward and if it goes wrong it is funny.
Nobody really pulls ahead. You do get a point for getting it right but you can also award a point to your favourite drawing.

The original clue was shotgun wedding but the card isn’t in the photo. So you can see it survived a couple of rounds before going wrong!

Canklesforankles · 19/08/2020 20:59

You can see the last picture desperately trying to draw women being left at the aisle. How on earth they would have drawn “seeks revenge” I don’t know Grin

That’s possibly too much information!

HumphreyGoodmanswife · 19/08/2020 21:09

Thanks for the game @Canklesforankles.
We're a majorly geeky board game family, always looking for new ones.

Added this one to my shopping list GrinGrin

Canklesforankles · 19/08/2020 21:18

Humphrey I hope you like it. I think I’m going to buy us One Night Werewolf an the back of this thread.

HumphreyGoodmanswife · 19/08/2020 21:24

Cankles yup, got that one down too!!

MarshmallowManiac · 19/08/2020 21:30

One Night Werewolf sounds really good, and also thinking about buying the Christmas edition of Monopoly Smile

Here are some wreath and garland ideas. Wisteria cuttings are really good if you know anyone cutting that back.

You can make your own hoop as in the video with thicker bits or buy a ring.

For garlands you can just tie bits together with string or add to a shop bought garland.
Here are a couple of links. The important thing is to enjoy and bit be eaten up with “craft anxiety “ fearing it’s not going to look like the cover of Homes And Gardens.

A bit of florist wire dies help attach things like pine cones. For inside you’ll need to make them later as they dry out or be happy to refresh. For the door wreath you can add bits as you go along.

I am hoping that outdoor ice skating will still be on!
I was thinking about this as well the other day. Mine are 13 and 16. We did the gingerbread house last year and DD loved it. They both love board games we were in WH Smith the other day and they have loads so I got a few new ideas. I am hoping local light switch ons/carols will still be on. It actually might be quite nice to be more local rather than rushing around mad x

MarshmallowManiac · 20/08/2020 18:13

I hope so too Mum we have some lovely outdoor rinks not too far from us. Yes really enjoy the local switch ons, usually have hot choc and cake afterwards. Grin Yes you're right it might be nice to slow right down, and visit the local ones this year. Smile

OP posts:
HumphreyGoodmanswife · 20/08/2020 19:36

My DCs both have ice skating lessons. Their rink is finally opening again next week but only for private lessons and for students graded at a pretty high level. Only 12 people allowed on the rink at once per 90min session. Fingers crossed things will ease over Autumn /Winter, we love an outdoors Christmas skate ❄️❄️

MarshmallowManiac · 21/08/2020 11:06

Yes fingers crossed everything will slowly get back to normal as love a good Christmas outing [santa]
