No tinsel for me - but I'm a seventies child so I was tinsel-overdosed at an early age.

Still haven't started my cake, although I do have the ingredients though. It'll have to be a weekend baking extravaganza 🎂

NoWordForFluffy · 18/08/2017 20:26

Scrappy, thin tinsel and shiny, coloured, foil ceiling decorations?!

ScrappyMalloy · 18/08/2017 20:41

Concertina- style shiny ceiling decorations, twisted crepe paper streamers crisscrossed across, Chinese lanterns with tassels sellotaped up there - the whole shebang 😀

A real tree dropping needles everywhere, and yes, thin tinsel everywhere!

NoWordForFluffy · 18/08/2017 20:42

Christmas in the 70s was a proper fire hazard! 😂

HolyShmoly · 18/08/2017 20:56

Scrappy, we still had those Christmasses in the early noughties. DM would still have it if she could find replacements for the stuff that DSis threw out a few years back.

You know the multicoloured glass string lights that seem to appear in a lot of American cutesy stuff? Can you get them in the UK or have they been completely replaced by the led ones?

ScrappyMalloy · 18/08/2017 20:58

Too right! DH's family covered the whole living room ceiling in fairy lights, all wired together and run off one plug, and the fuse was always blowing. Scary stuff

ScrappyMalloy · 18/08/2017 21:03

My mum still wheels a watered-down version out for the grandchildren. Blu tak has replaced the sellotape, and she can't get up as far as the ceiling any more, but it is still has a tacky, seventies vibe. I love it (but always check her smoke alarm 😉)

HolyShmoly · 18/08/2017 22:11

Does she wheel out balloons? This was another staple in ours.

ScrappyMalloy · 18/08/2017 22:15

I'd forgotten about balloons! Was it just ours that used to burst in the night and wake us up?

HolyShmoly · 18/08/2017 22:26

I slept like a log (the joy of youth) so I don't recall ever being woken up, but it's more than possible.

I secretly can't wait until I can make crepe paper chains with future children and embrace the tack for all it's worth.

ConstantlyCooking · 18/08/2017 22:45

Well done to Woolly's DD. DD didn't get the grades she needed and has decided to re-sit rather than go through clearing.
Looking forward to the Matalan Christmas show tho'

TheWoollybacksWife · 18/08/2017 22:55

That's a really mature decision Constantly. Does she want to do them all again or just one or two?

Thank you for your congratulations.

FridgeCut · 18/08/2017 23:37

Good decision Constantly, very grown up and taking the long view.

My house still looks a bit like christmas threw up on it, complete with paper chains and ceiling shit, much to my husband's hate. Though no balloons.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/08/2017 00:11

Star 127 Star

127 as in A127 , the road which takes us onto the M25 to DD 2nd Home Lakeside.

We were there today, I could tell the shops were itching to get the Christmas stuff out...............Costco had Panetonne last week

FridgeCut · 19/08/2017 00:29

Costco probably had panettone as soon as the easter eggs were done :) As well they should!

73kittycat73 · 19/08/2017 02:17

Haven't been here in a while. Hello to anybody I haven't spoke to before. Xmas Smile
When I decorate I still have tinsel everywhere! Loads on the tree, don't like to see a bare patch. All around the TV, computer monitor, bookcase...I don't do many celling decorations anymore as I live in a small flat and you have to move the furniture here, there, and everywhere to get the ladder in. My mum does in hers though. Xmas Grin

christmasunicorn · 19/08/2017 08:12

I've very tempted to choose mid-century-modern theme for my Christmas this year. And get all the shiny foil ceiling decs out. I noticed selfridges sold them last year so that must mean they are due a comeback.

(They still appear in my wishlist although the links won't work)

Hi kittycat!

I used to love all the foil ceiling decorations and he 70s paper ones that made the big circles that hung from
The ceiling. Tinsel over ththe picture frames. sighs

Oh the memories

tootsieglitterballs · 19/08/2017 09:20

Ooooh, love a bit of tinsel.... I usually wrap it around our bannister as it's wall mounted on a narrow staircase so I can't get a proper garland up it!

TheWoollybacksWife · 19/08/2017 09:41

sorry folks.

I do love the jewel coloured baubles though but would need a third tree. I would also need a new house to put the third tree in.

BananaSandwichesEveryDay · 19/08/2017 09:46

Not sure of anyone here will be interested, but L'Occitane have announced that you can sign up here to be notified when their advent calendar will go on sale. I had one last year and was very impressed. I've already saved some gift vouchers I've been given this year to help with the cost.

MuddlingThroughLife · 19/08/2017 09:52

No tinsel here!

I've not started the main shopping but have started to pick up stocking fillers. I love doing the kids stockings but find them so hard to fill! Last night I ordered a ravenclaw drinks coaster for dd1 and a funny bookmark for dd2 saying something along the lines of "did you get lost on the way to the internet". It's a well known fact she doesn't enjoy reading (unless it's a you tuber book) and spends most of her time on you tube or Netflix.

SideOrderofSprouts · 19/08/2017 10:10

I just suggested to chipstheeldest we got rid of the tinsel this year as per suggestion here

She's horrified and disappointed in you all 😂😂

ScrappyMalloy · 19/08/2017 10:14

I am wavering over starting to get stocking fillers.

I have three kiddiwinks. Two are very grown up and have left home, and the youngest is 14, so theoretically I could probably just shove money in a card each and they would be happy.

But I love Christmas, so I buy a stupid amount of presents for them instead, and their 'stocking' is actually a pillowcase! I do put in a mix of sweets, favourite snacks as well, but it takes a bit of time and choosing to sort it out.

Actually, scrap that. I need to start looking for stocking fillers, don't I?
