I survived! Xmas Grin

We did our food shop today (first to Lidl who had no festive food whatsoever) then to Sainsbury's. Blimey it was scary in there Xmas Shock Utterly bonkers. Inevitably there was no sage and various shortages but I decided I didnt care, if they didnt have it we'd do with out - I'm not going back this side of Christmas.

Good job though that I had dh with me, my back was particularly bad and making me feel a bit odd so I couldnt actually get anywhere I needed to. I just wasnt fast enough. I ended up letting everyone past and smiling at them in a rather mad way while they thanked me for letting them through Xmas Grin if it hadnt been for dh I would still be there stuck by the potatoes.

Anyone else feel like they deserve a 'well done' for surviving?

I did Tesco this morning - stupidly busy. I got told off by the woman on the self scan checkout for checking out my shopping as I had 32 items. But the sign above said baskets OR trolleys and there was no queue (when I arrived) at the self scan and three trolleys deep elsewhere. Luckily I just grinned and said 'Happy Christmas to you too' and ignored her.

And I have to go out tomorrow as my mixer went bang and we'll have no yule log if I don't. :(

AfternoonsandCoffeespoons · 22/12/2011 20:59

Leave it til Saturday OYBBK!! I dare ya! Xmas Grin

I'm working (in a shop) 8-6 on Saturday. That's the really brave lot that'll be in then!

BabyGiraffes · 22/12/2011 21:00

Have to go shopping in the morning to collect stuff I ordered... Not looking forward to it with two sick feverish children in tow and starting to feel pretty rubbish myself Sad. Ah well, has to be done Hmm

BetterTogether · 22/12/2011 21:02

We did Lidl and Waitrose this afternoon, both surprisingly quiet/normal at about 4pm. Very glad the shopping is out of the way now - I've got my Baileys and Lindt sea salt dark chocolate - nothing else matters!! Xmas Wink Xmas Grin

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 22/12/2011 21:02

I've got to go tomorrow. Got so carried away by Mum taking us out for Christmas dinner that I forgot I would need food for the other six days of the week and failed to book a delivery slot.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 22/12/2011 21:03

webwiz - was it still squawking? Xmas Grin

drummerswife - well timed!!!

Afternoons - I am not that brave (i don't think) Could be kind of fun to find out what it's like though...... Good luck to you, I don't envy you.

Well it did look like a very nice turkey as far as turkeys go so I know what she was getting at but it was dead and featherless Xmas Smile

Ponyclubmum · 22/12/2011 22:38

Thanks for the reassurance roastparsnips. I'm a 'list person', so have a vair comprehensive list drawn up. I will pack my handbag with treats and distractions and pray for the best. Also, I will have my very pointiest elbows at the ready. Xmas Smile

whomovedmychocolate · 22/12/2011 23:14

Grrr just been to Sainsburys to buy a new flipping mixer. Grrrr! Was busyish. Staff were all about twelve years old.

Got my mixer though. Better blardy well work now!

whomovedmychocolate · 22/12/2011 23:15

Also Tesco people - they have their christmas cake mixes reduced to £2 which is fab as you can make it and age it for a year then ice it next year. Sainsburys have the same offer on but theirs doesn't include the icing.

Jinsel · 22/12/2011 23:19

Just got back. Sad

Would have been a lot quicker but woman in front had a massive trolley full which took ages to offload. Unfortunately she only had enough money for about a third of it so it had to be cancelled, reorganised and rung through again and the remainder reshelved. I reckoned there was an easy £300 shop on the belt so it was a lengthy process.

Glad to be home

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 22/12/2011 23:24

cripes Jinsel thats a bit grim.

Hard to imagine people out at the shops now, am in jim jams lying on the sofa with a rather nice sloe gin.

handy tip wmmc, you can barely buy a bag of sultanas for that price.

DillyTinsel · 22/12/2011 23:27

I went at about 8.30pm. Got to checkout and had forgotten my purse...

roastparsnipsandbrusselsprouts · 22/12/2011 23:30

Tinsel did they put it aside for you so you could go and get your purse? I have done that in our Tesco before and they put the whole trolley in the cold store while I drove home and got it.

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 22/12/2011 23:32

oh Tinsel :( nightmare.

OP posts:
DillyTinsel · 22/12/2011 23:34

Yeah, they put it through the checkout then just to the side while I went home. Just the end of a v crappy week!

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 22/12/2011 23:38

I hope that it all massively improves for you tomorrow.

yellowflowers · 23/12/2011 00:24

I survived tesco too. Busy but not horrendous. Except all the five year olds seemed to be allowed to push trolleys. Badly.

whomovedmychocolate · 23/12/2011 08:25

For anyone making christmas cakes now for next year, feed it every three weeks with any leftover alcohol - it'll be lush by Christmas and will shut up elderly relatives by leaving them inebriated! Huzzah!

AKMD · 23/12/2011 10:25

I've done:

Sainsbury's on Wednesday (turkey, strudel)
ASDA on Wednesday (nearly everything else)
Marks & Spencer on Thursday (pineapples)
Tesco on Thursday (blackberries, vac-packed chestnuts)
Waitrose on thursday (whole allspice berries)

I still need pomegranate seeds (not way am I spending hours de-seeding whole pomegranates!) and baby carrots with tops still on. I have sent DH out today while I'm on MN at work.

AKMD · 23/12/2011 10:26

yellowflowers i foudn the same - it's been busy but mainly because of all the children in/pushing/around trolleys.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 23/12/2011 10:33

I went to ASDA this morning at about 8.30, figuring that was after all the insane early morning people, but before the lazy masses - it wasn't too bad. They had lots of everything, a few ditherers and a bit of a wait to pay. It was getting very busy as I left though.

I think if you were brave enough to wait until tomorrow you might be OK, as everyone else is thinking they'll get it done before then. My mum has been following the price reduction of the turkey she bought last week in Co-op - £20 when she bought it, then £17, now £12 apparently. You could probably do a very cheap shop at about 3pm on Christmas Eve. Or they might have nothing left!

ReshapeWhileDashingThroTheSnow · 23/12/2011 10:52

We're due to do our shop this morning - am thinking Sainsboro rather than Waitrose as I'm tired of being fleeced. But we don't need much really. Sending DH out for the turkey tomorrow as the bastard thing won't fit in the fridge, and can go straight into its bath when it comes home. AIBU to hope against hope that he doesn't find one, and has to bring home a (lovely, tasty, small, cheap, easy to cook) chicken instead? Grin

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 23/12/2011 10:57

Crikey AMD, your lunch sounds very nice - can we come round please?
Am going to be setting off soon - picking up our turkey from the farm shop and then town.
