Supermarket survivors.....

I survived! Xmas Grin

We did our food shop today (first to Lidl who had no festive food whatsoever) then to Sainsbury's. Blimey it was scary in there Xmas Shock Utterly bonkers. Inevitably there was no sage and various shortages but I decided I didnt care, if they didnt have it we'd do with out - I'm not going back this side of Christmas.

Good job though that I had dh with me, my back was particularly bad and making me feel a bit odd so I couldnt actually get anywhere I needed to. I just wasnt fast enough. I ended up letting everyone past and smiling at them in a rather mad way while they thanked me for letting them through Xmas Grin if it hadnt been for dh I would still be there stuck by the potatoes.

Anyone else feel like they deserve a 'well done' for surviving?

Still, I can't help but snigger at the person who sat an enormous frozen turkey in the baby seat (the small baby plastic thing) at Tesco... It looked slightly surreal Xmas Grin

Jinsel · 23/12/2011 18:31

The biggest shop I've seen so far was three full trollies and it came to just under £500.

It made my £65 feel positively scrooge like.

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 23/12/2011 18:48

We went today, in the middle of the day, and there was 'nobody' there. It was quite surreal as there was literally hardly anyone about. I was in the town centre this morning and that wasn't exactly packed either. In the supermarket, DH took a trolley and went for the drinks as he can lift the boxes and bottles of pop, and I went for everything else. Took us about an hour door to door, no hassle at all Xmas Grin The whole lot cost us £140 and included £20 on a last minute gift too.

MrsAFlowerpot · 23/12/2011 19:05

Have just returned from Sainsbos and M&S (am also in WGC Smile). Not empty, but not busier than our regular shop (Sundays). Just bloody well more expensive!! Lots of turkey etc. Sprouts and spuds seemed only things in short supply.

BellaVita · 23/12/2011 19:20

Birds, I catered for 10 last year (only 8 this year) but I didn't need three trolleys worth of stuff.

larakitten · 23/12/2011 19:28

Another Tesco survivor here, albeit an injured one. Went in at 9.20......fell out with an old git and his wife who were arguing with a poor shelf-stacker that they should have had a one way system in operation Confused. They physically shoved me out of the way to get to the Boursin cheese, and again at the cream. My temper snapped when they used their trolley to shove mine out the way, trapping DDs fingers between themAngry.

My injury came when the alcohol aisle opened at 10am.....in the frenzy to purchase consume as much as humanly possibly, someone rammed their trolley right into my achilles tendon as I browsed the cider gin. It hurt, and still does. An apology? My arse........

Never again.

lara I hope it heals quickly Xmas Shock

I had to go back to the supermarket tonight for dh's trifle ingredients.

I got parked right at the door and there were other parking spaces beside mine.

It was quieter than normal if anything and there were staff just standing waiting, twiddling their thumbs.

There was one poor lady with several trollies full who was spending ££££ but she seemed to be buying all her gifts too Xmas Shock

TheAnnoyingSatsuma · 23/12/2011 20:39

Waitrose is empty.

RecursiveMoon · 23/12/2011 20:47

DH has gone to M+S and Morrison's. He's already texted to say that M+S had no Christmas food Sad.

Now he's in the mobile phone black spot that is Morrison's...

Yikes, we might have no Christmas food Grin.

RecursiveMoon · 23/12/2011 21:02

It's official, there are no turkey crowns left In The World Grin. Sod it, we're going to have an organic chicken instead.

lolalotta · 23/12/2011 21:07

My brother-in-law cued for 40 mins in our local Waitrose this morning! :-o

AKMD · 23/12/2011 22:21

After visiting 7 supermarkets in the last 3 days, I have finally got enough carrots to feed 8 people. I nearly cackled with glee and did a victory dance when I saw the full box at Tesco in MK but managed to suppress my feelings out of consideration to my fellow shoppers :o

BellaVita · 23/12/2011 22:25

AKMD - 7 supermarkets Shock

roastparsnipsandbrusselsprouts · 23/12/2011 22:28

What's going on? There were crates and crates of them in the Tesco I was in tonight: and sprouts, parsnips etc. The only thing that was sold out was bread and that Quince stuff for cheese boards

AKMD · 23/12/2011 23:09

I should point out that these are poncy baby carrots with the leaves still on. I could have had 8 tonnes of normal carrots or leafless baby carrots by now so don't feel sorry for me!

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 24/12/2011 08:00

We forgot to buy butter Xmas Shock whilst in the grand scheme of things it matters not one whit I don't think that brandy olive spread will quite be the same.

AKMD - a carrot shortage??? argh what will poor rudolph eat? Thank goodness you found some!

Just dropped dd off at work (waitrose)
Queues of people outside, carpark filling up fast.
DD said yesterday the shop was madly busy at 8am then quiet at 11ish.
Everyone thinking they'd miss the rush and go early .

whomovedmychocolate · 24/12/2011 09:17

I went at 7am to get antipoop meds (DH has norovirus - marvellous!) and it was empty in Sainsburys. Seriously, about five of us. They said it was bloody awful yesterday though.

insanityscratching · 24/12/2011 10:30

Went to Tesco this morning about 7.30 for milk and eggs because the market stall I usually get them from had run out and it was very quiet. A few people with large trolleys full of food but most people picking up just a basketful like me.
Great no need to enter a shop for the best part of a week now Grin as I picked up meat, bread and veg order from independent shops before Tesco

PattySimcox · 24/12/2011 13:23

So what time do we reckon is a good time to make a quick dash in and out to grab some bargains?

startail · 24/12/2011 15:02

Tescos 11am this morning, pretty busy, but manageable. Pretty much fully stocked. I even managed a ready roasted chicken for lunch (these vanish).Grin
