I survived! Xmas Grin

We did our food shop today (first to Lidl who had no festive food whatsoever) then to Sainsbury's. Blimey it was scary in there Xmas Shock Utterly bonkers. Inevitably there was no sage and various shortages but I decided I didnt care, if they didnt have it we'd do with out - I'm not going back this side of Christmas.

Good job though that I had dh with me, my back was particularly bad and making me feel a bit odd so I couldnt actually get anywhere I needed to. I just wasnt fast enough. I ended up letting everyone past and smiling at them in a rather mad way while they thanked me for letting them through Xmas Grin if it hadnt been for dh I would still be there stuck by the potatoes.

Anyone else feel like they deserve a 'well done' for surviving?

You are so right Overtired. It is nice not to have to venture out for a few days after, but I think that people just go into a bizarre panic mode.

Good job 2kids!

I have an online shop to be delivered tomorrow night but wasn't convinced that they could be trusted not to substitute my turkey with a couple of chicken breasts or something so have to pick up turkey etc from M&S on Saturday between 11-12pm - God help me!

Ponyclubmum · 22/12/2011 19:04

Oh what am I letting myself in for? I'm going tomorrow morning with DS (2 and a half). Don't really need too much 'festive' stuff (Christmas dinner at MIL's) so was hoping it wouldn't be too bad and they'd have everything I need. Am I an idiot??

PomBearAtTheGatesOfDoom · 22/12/2011 19:11

All I need is bread and buns and I shall send DH on Saturday, to bring 'em back Dead or Alive. I care not where they come from, as long as he finds one sliced loaf in white, same in brown/wholemeal/with bits in, and 2 dozen buns of any variety.
We went to Morrisons and Aldi yesterday and got a trolley load in each, and DH has gone to ASDA now, but he only needs a single duvet and pillow so should be ok.

roastparsnipsandbrusselsprouts · 22/12/2011 19:12

Pony just go with plenty time, a list and some snacks/bits and pieces to keep ds amused (or bribe him with a treat) and you will be fine.

BellaVita · 22/12/2011 19:13

I popped to Sainsbo's today to pick up the turkey crown and it was just starting to get messy Shock

Why in earth do people need to push and pull two trolleys? The shops are inky closed for one day fgs.

member · 22/12/2011 19:24

I've been to:
M&S food hall (turkey,party bits)
Sainsburys(only a few bits but the car park had ineffectual marshalls & car park rage was rife!)

Waitrose Express in town (more party food)
Small Tescos in town (Cheeselets)
Morrisons for all the bits not got elsewhere.

bamboobutton · 22/12/2011 19:33

went to sainsburys yesterday all geared up for christmas supermarket hell, and it was dead! the car park was rammed but the place was like a normal weekday. assume everyone had parked there and wandered over to the other shops over the way.

makemineapinot · 22/12/2011 19:37

turkey in freezer - bought a few weeks ago, along with most of the puds, booze, frozen roasties (duck fat ones so I cant look down on myself - haha!!)etc. Went to M&S express at local garage today and picked up veg, cream etc. If I haven't got it now, we will not starve, we will survice for a day on selcation boxes alone! Anyway, we seem to have approx. 10 million vats of custard for some mad reason... Think DS (9) is responsible! Panto and Pizza Express in Glasgow tomorrow (plus george Sq festivities) then Puss n Boots at cinema followed by Frany and Bennys on Xmas Eve! Sorted! Mucxh easier than supermarket hell!

makemineapinot · 22/12/2011 19:38

oos, booze not in freezer Xmas Confused too much festive booze sampling I think Xmas Grin

Just psyching myself up as I write this.

Me and DH are heading out to the local Sainsburys to wrestle fellow shoppers to the ground for a bag of parsnips....

Happy Christmas to all and to all a Good Night Xmas Grin

KinkyDoritoWithFairyLightsOn · 22/12/2011 19:47

Scary stuff.

I saw an old man shout at an old lady (not together) because she was too slow.

I only went in for a couple of things.

If my order has substitutions for tonight, I'm sending DH in to get what we need. My Tesco is crappy at the best of times.

sleepevader · 22/12/2011 19:48

Sent my DP with a list of things I forgot.....he he he!

TheAnnoyingSatsuma · 22/12/2011 19:53

Just back from Tesco. It was odd - the car park was so completely chocka that even the staff with the 'space here' lollipops looked dejected. But inside there were no queues at the checkout. Where were all the shoppers?

But people were lovely and we raised quite a bit of ££ for our scout group, even from the folk who smiled politely and declined our offer of bag-packing. One couple were having 17 for xmas lunch, 27 in the evening and the same for breakfast on Boxing Day. Two trolleys full of grub!

PinkPepper · 22/12/2011 19:54

I'm heading in at about 3am when DP gets back from work and before I start work. we normally shop in the early hours anyway so it better not be busy (and I'm used to empty shops) or I might just sit in the trolley with the food.

lollipoppet · 22/12/2011 19:58

I am bewildered that people venture out to several supermarkets. Why?? It's horrible enough just going to one place

AfternoonsandCoffeespoons · 22/12/2011 20:09

I'm on my way back from Asda as I write! DH, DS and I did all the pressie deliveries, then the big shop 'on the way home'. On public transport, too. Really got me in the festive mood! Hmm

bebeinamanger · 22/12/2011 20:09

Did 'the shop' at Tesco yesterday but will have to go back as the dates on some stuff were crap! Milk for example, best use by date was Sat 24th. Ditto cream. Salad bits (for boxing day) had dates of 22nd/23rd! DH has a theory it's to try & make people go back before Christmas. Our little store is actually open 24hours from tomorrow morning til 7pm on Sat so will do a mad dash for extra bits (bread, milk, sausages, salads) late in the evening when they have restocked the shelves!

It actually wasn't that busy yesterday, although was hoping I wouldn't have to go back til next week!

mogs0 · 22/12/2011 20:11

Just been to Tesco after this thread reminded me I've run out of dishwasher tablets. There is never more than about 20 cars there but tonight the car park was nearly full. Luckily everyone had big trolleys so the self service tills were empty! The girl manning the ss tills said one of the checkout staff had fallen asleep at her till!

roastparsnipsandbrusselsprouts · 22/12/2011 20:36

I don't know about others lollipoppet but we live in a rural area so our Tesco and Morrisons are tiny and therefore don't have massive stock. We have to shop around a bit to get all the necessaries. The advantage is that there is always parking and they are not as busy as others sound. Yikes!

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 22/12/2011 20:46

Some scary stories starting to emerge! Respect to Afternoons!

Well done fellow Survivors and Good Luck to those going in!

am about to sample some lovely beer that dh managed to shove in the trolley while I was perusing cling film.

Mind you, I'll need some soothing tomorrow, when wrapping dhs presents I realised that I didnt really have anything to wrap for him. So, I am going to be brave once more and venture into town.

went this morning after dropping dd off at school.it was ok i was in and out within about an hour.bumped into a friend who was coming in as i was leaving and it had took her 40 mins to find a parking space.

webwiz · 22/12/2011 20:56

I ventured to Sainsburys yesterday evening and it was ok. There were several bottlenecks near the sprouts, cheese and buffet food but compared to when I went in the daytime last year it was very calm. The lady on the till said my turkey looked "very healthy" Hmm
