I survived! Xmas Grin

We did our food shop today (first to Lidl who had no festive food whatsoever) then to Sainsbury's. Blimey it was scary in there Xmas Shock Utterly bonkers. Inevitably there was no sage and various shortages but I decided I didnt care, if they didnt have it we'd do with out - I'm not going back this side of Christmas.

Good job though that I had dh with me, my back was particularly bad and making me feel a bit odd so I couldnt actually get anywhere I needed to. I just wasnt fast enough. I ended up letting everyone past and smiling at them in a rather mad way while they thanked me for letting them through Xmas Grin if it hadnt been for dh I would still be there stuck by the potatoes.

Anyone else feel like they deserve a 'well done' for surviving?

Reshape I was looking longingly at the chickens too but everyone is expecting turkey so that is what they will get. It would have been an awful lot cheaper to buy chicken but I'm not confident I could pass it off as a very small turkey, even carved.

The pineapples and blackberries are for 22mo DS. He is as fussy as fussy can be so as everyone else is getting a special meal I thought it only fair that he get some favourites too and DH can do the resultant nappies.

BabyGiraffes · 23/12/2011 13:30

Went to collect food order from Marks and get a few bits from huge Tesco on the way and came home less than an hour later feeling a bit disturbed how quiet it was. Where is everyone? In previous years I queued for an hour to get anywhere near the car park - today I drove straight in and parked in a family space right by the food entrance! Previously it was impossible to move in store even when only carrying a basket and I had to queue another eternity to pay - today I walked freely with trolley and two dc and waited about a minute to pay. Incredible. Either most people order online now or else some people have realised that it really is not necessarily to have an obscene trolley load of food for one day (with shops open again on Boxing Day anyway).

Bohica · 23/12/2011 13:37

I went at 6.30am and it was mobbed, I also bought chicken because it's just us this year but I am going to risk the 3pm xmas eve dash to see what bargins I can buy to freeze.

I haven't got up from the sofa since I finished putting the wine shopping away at 9.30!!

BabyGiraffes · 23/12/2011 13:40

Bohica Oh, they did say it was busy at 6 Xmas Grin. Seems that my dc having an unexpected lie in worked well for me...

MrsPlesWearsAFez · 23/12/2011 13:51

I stupidly braved Waitrose earlier.

The self scanners were out of order, there were cars abandoned in the car park, and lots of shelves were empty. It was like the start of the apocalypse, not Christmas Hmm

Best part is that I came home injured. I wasn't even doing a Xmas shop ffs, we just needed a few fresh bits...

Bohica · 23/12/2011 13:52

DH stayed at home in bed with sleeping children so at least I got to shop child free which is a luxury for me saddo

I was behind an old gentleman for the first 3 isles, he spent time blocking the isle choosing his chicken and then he blocked my way again we met again at the beef isle where he complained that they were to big for one Sad so I took him round to the isle where they do those silver trays of ready to cook meats and he was very pleased with his £4 tin of beef Smile

I've just come back from sainsburys
It was bedlam
The most irksome things is families who all go together
Why don't one of them wait somewhere else with the kids instead of shrieking at them for knocking over the selection box display

SocialButterfly · 23/12/2011 14:21

Just done tesco, loaded the whole shop ( 2 trolleys) packed it and then the till froze, we had to move to another till, unpack the bags, load on to conveyer belt and then re pack the bags....and the till froze. I kid you not, we then had to take our 2 trolleys to customer service where they looked up how much we owed and I paid there. They have us £5 off and a bunch of flowers but it was a nightmare!! I am not going back in a supermarket this side of Christmas!

Bohica · 23/12/2011 14:24

£5 and a bunch of flowers! Xmas Shock Xmas Hmm tight arsed Tesco.

braveandchristmassy · 23/12/2011 14:28

Went to Sainsbury's at just after 9am this morning, expecting the worse but determined to remain happy and cheerful - I nearly succeeded and dd 8 did really well. Some people get so grumpy and miserable about it all don't they?

I'll have to venture out again as some essentials were out of stock eg brandy butter.

I'm so glad we managed to go so early as the car park was rammed when we left at 10.30am.

PigeonPie · 23/12/2011 14:37

I got to Tesco at about 7.30 this morning and was home by 8.30; it was heaving - worse than on a busy Saturday lunchtime (which I avoid at all costs). Got everything I needed though. Just got to go to the Butcher tomorrow morning. Got home to two clean dressed DSs and the table laid for breakfast (well done DH)!

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 23/12/2011 14:55

MrsPles - how on earth did you get injured????

Socialbutterfly what on earth were you buying that kept breaking the system?!!!

Bohica, that was lovely of you :)

Well done fellow survivors! i made it through town. It was fine actually and quite nice to say hello in a happy Christmas sort of way to various people. Farm shop was a bit bonkers though. Witnessed a very amusing couples argument where She kept telling Him to stop being so stressed in such an angry and stressy manner that I'm surprised he didnt just leave her in the carpark! We had to queue for ever with turkey in arms and the poor chap behind us clearly was struggling and so rested his turkey on a pile of ready made meringues Xmas Shock

Drove to the supermarket after work, car park gridlocked so drove home, grabbed my trusty old lady trolley and walked there (in the pouring rain). Got all I wanted though, not helped by massive jar of pickled onions falling off the next conveyor belt and drenching my legs in vinegar.

CarlottaJ · 23/12/2011 16:25

Oh God, i though i'd done it all, but just realised i forgot eggs and rolls for xmas morn brekkie..........NOOOOOO......that means i'm back to sainsbury hell on xmas eve Xmas Shock

aStarOverMangerways · 23/12/2011 16:45

i survived a trip to lidl and morrisons today; more importantly, so did my car Blush and the nice lady's car that i accidentally scraped while trying to park in the hell that was morrisons car park Blush Blush Blush i owned up and offered to swap details but she waved it off with a smile, citing the spirit of christmas. i could have cried. if you're a mner, lovely lady, thank you for being so kind!

DingDongFruitShootsMakeYouHigh · 23/12/2011 16:52

Just back from Sainsbury's in Helluverhole.

Was quite busy. They had restocked the veg luckily. We weren't doing a full shop just veg and several other non essential dog toys

Lots of people queuing for the air at the petrol station. They must all be delivering heavy presents to relatives Xmas Grin

Jinsel · 23/12/2011 17:43

I've got to go again :(

Forgot that we need to eat tonight and all of tomorrow

OhYouBadBadReindeer · 23/12/2011 18:04

Jinsel, can't you just eat chocolate?

Jinsel · 23/12/2011 18:05

fivegomadindorset · 23/12/2011 18:06

Dh just got back and said it was fine, he went in at 4.30 and it is half an hour away so was very quick.

Haziedoll · 23/12/2011 18:08

birds But do they really need three large trolleys' worth of food? I do see your point but honestly...

Guess you are right... we have no family so my food shop has been quite reasonable with a few nice extras thrown in Smile
