Asked for some advice on FB page & apparently autism & Down Syndrome don’t class as SMI. Wow! Some people really are that stupid?!🤦‍♀️
Think I’ll be sticking to this group from now on!

mumtumok · 26/01/2024 09:16

rosey1993 · 26/01/2024 09:33

So sorry to hear that, and how utterly horrid of them to make you feel like that. You are doing everything you can (as we all are, here) and it's not your fault they turned it down. It's a constant fight, I know that. I'll be doing an MR if we are turned down, but I don't think they realise how exhausting and gaslighting it all feels on top of wait times and everything else we go through as parents of kids with additional needs and disabilities.

Sending hugs and solidarity.

I have seen people who have had mountains of evidence with children who clearly require help above and beyond that of a child the same age that have been declined, to then be awarded a high rate at MR. I hate to be cynical and I hope I'm wrong but it seem like sometimes they just have to make a certain amount of declines to reach targets.

That sounds horribly dismissive and not helpful at all. I suppose it's because SMI specifically relates to the level of learning disability or impaired intelligence, and not to the actual diagnosis (I've been having a look to see if it's applicable to us). My daughter with Autism isn't going to fit into that category, although her needs are still great. My sister with Downs and Autism definitely would, though.

Best of luck. It's like constantly jumping through hoops.

Oh, I was reading the other day that if someone in the household is SMI you can get a reduction in council tax. I didn't know that.

Hotpinkangel19 · 26/01/2024 10:33
