Am I the only who is surprised at how very small a lot of us now grown-ups were? Our mothers must all have been puffing on 60 a day or something... (apart from the twins etc...)

piratecat · 21/04/2008 12:06

This is why I'm asking: a totally unscientific straw poll of my friends reveals that most of us have had babies significantly heavier than we were at birth and I was wondering if it was the same out in the wider world, which it looks as if it is (though not to the degree of my immediate circle). I have a couple of friends who were told that they were basically 'too small' for the size of baby they had making vaginal birth very difficult, so I started wondering if babies are getting bigger at a faster rate than grownups, iyswim, (for example, I'm bigger than my mum, but I'm not 14% bigger than she is) and if that might have something to do with the recent increase in interventions in births.

So it's quite interesting to see everyone's stats. The smoking thing is something I hadn't thought of presumably even those with non-smoking mums were probably exposed to more smoky environments than we were. But I also wondered if there might be some connection between the rising age at which people have their first and the higher weights for example some further random and totally unscientific clicking on some of the profiles of those of you who've had smaller babies (where you haven't said they were prems) shows that many were in their early 20s when they had their first.

Yes, I am a pg nerd with too much time on her hands. [considers setting up excel spreadsheet to plot results...]

SoupKitchen · 21/04/2008 13:32

Obviously in my family you weigh more the earlier you are born

mybabysinthegarden · 21/04/2008 13:32

suedonim, you're bucking another trend which is that most people's babies seem to get bigger as they go on!
