Gowri Motha's Gentle Birth Method reckons many women eat too much (and the wrong thing), and gain too much weight, which leads to heavier babies, in some cases heavier than their frames could safely deliver. I am not saying I agree with this but it does seem in line with the face that adults are gradually getting heavier over the years.
On the other hand, better nutrition could mean heavier babies couldn't it?

egypt · 21/04/2008 15:12

interesting

me: 8lb 2
dd1: 7lb 12
dd2: 6lb 11
all overdue

and had dd1 at 29, dd2 at 32
don't smoke

mummydoc · 21/04/2008 15:18

me 4 lbs at term one of undiagnosed twins born to a smoking mother ( doctor advised her too to lower her blood pressure !)

dd1 4lbs 4 at 35 weeks
dd2 9lbs at 41 weeks ( that was a shock)

VictorianSqualor · 21/04/2008 15:21

slinkie, I hardly ate anything the last time because I was so sick, had hyperemesis for about 6 months and baby was already well on the 98th centile from his scans at 20weeks upwards so I'd be prtty surprised if my eating had anything to do with him being over ten pounds.

It's more likely that genetics caused his size as DP is 6ft 2in and quite stocky and I am 5'8'' with a medium frame, both our families are quite tall and no-one is petite framed.

marmadukescarlet · 21/04/2008 15:22

Me 5lbs 2oz

DD 8lbs 9.5oz (41 wks)

DS 7lbs 8.5oz (40 wks)

Febes · 21/04/2008 15:22

Me- 7lbs
DD - 5 lbs 15oz at 41 weeks

MrsTittleMouse · 21/04/2008 15:25

slinkie - my MW was concerned that if I put on too much weight in this pregnancy then I would have another big baby and another difficult delivery - until I told her that I only put on 20lb with chunky DD (well under the healthy average gain). I actually started a thread to find out if large weight gain = big baby and vice versa, and there were an awful lot of women who put on very little and had big babies or put on a lot and had tiddlers.

JulesJules · 21/04/2008 15:37

Me - 4lb 7 oz
DD1 7lb 14oz
DD2 7lb 14oz

Mercy · 21/04/2008 15:41

mybabysinthegarden - it would be interesting to see the results on a spreadsheet!!

Ovbiously there could be all sorts of reasons for differences in birthweight - for example in my case it has to be straightforward genetics , ie, size of my parents and dh's parents combined to produce smallish babies.

slinkiemalinki · 21/04/2008 16:06

Yes fair enough - I think Dr Motha has to scare us somehow into her miserable pregnancy diet which seems to consist of lentils and ayurvedic tinctures for nine months...

suedonim · 21/04/2008 16:18

Mybabysinthegarden, yes, it's weird that mine have got smaller. I just knew during the last two pgs that they weren't going to be as big.

A midwife friend of mine reckons the average (uncomplicated) baby she delivers now is about 8lb. One day she delivered four babies over 10lbs in succession.

I'm sure some of it is that women are better fed nowadays and also women are just larger than they used to be. When I compare my 20yo dd's friends to my own friends, dd's generation are Amazons!

icklelou · 21/04/2008 16:21

Me - 7lb 4oz

ds 9lb 5oz, overdue, me aged 18

dd 6lb 11oz, 39 weeks, me aged 27

I think ds takes after dh, and dd takes after me.

BrassicMonkey · 21/04/2008 16:23

Me - 7lb 6
DP - 7lb

DS - 7lb 2. He's 6 now and the biggest in his class. His dad is big, so I think he's going to take after him.

MrsTittleMouse · 21/04/2008 16:29

slinkie - No problem. I think that I'm a bit sensitive about any comment that DD's birth could be my "fault". I think that a lot of people that have normal births think that my DD was big because I ate too much, was OP because I was sat on my bum all the time, and that all that I needed to do was yoga/hypnosis/active birth and everything would have been fine. I find it a bit annoying to explain that I did put on very little weight, did OFP, did yoga breathing, did hypnosis, did do active labouring and did push in every conceivable position.

MrsTittleMouse · 21/04/2008 16:30

Oh yes, I would say that for the best chances of a smaller (but healthy) baby, DON'T marry someone a foot taller than you.

SheikYerbouti · 21/04/2008 17:49

Me: 8lb 1oz (11 days late

DS1: 8lbs 2oz (12 days late)

DS2: 7lbs 8oz (8 days early)

So I reckon we are all about the same.

DP was nearly 12lbs at birth, the fat fucker

solo · 21/04/2008 17:58

Me 6lb 15oz

Ds 7lb 13oz

Dd 7lb 15oz

reikizen · 21/04/2008 17:58

Me 8lb 4 oz, dd1 8lb 4oz. Both born at 3.45 in the morning and dd2 born on my birthday! Weird.

solo · 21/04/2008 17:59

Ds was 2 days late, Dd was 7 days late...

Wheelybug · 21/04/2008 18:01

Me - 7 lbs 8 oz (11 days late)

DD - 4 lbs 9 oz (3 weeks early, enforced delivery due to IUGR)

Cammelia · 21/04/2008 18:04

We're all tall in both our families but my family tends to have tiny babies and then, once out, they grow like crazy
