cunty As you know I chose not to have the NF tests done anyway. You are a very strong and capable woman and you will cope no matter what. A "serious" case of Downs should have shown up at the 20 week scan because of all the things they look at within the heart. There are degrees of disability of course associated with Downs but the most difficult ones to deal with (imo) would be if the child were born with heart abnormalities - which would've shown up in the scan. 1 in 20,000 is still a chance, a slim one, but a chance nonetheless.

switty I had the same reaction at the gym!

Ski how you do know the shape of my husbands nob !?!

Tues a lot of my friends haven't even had a nuchal and have just had stats on bloods and have been happy with results of 300:1. If there was ANY concern they would offer an amnio. One friend with odds of 1 in 120 for first and 1 in 93 for 2nd had amnio both times and all fine.

skihorse · 21/04/2010 10:05

I believe one of the indicators is blood flowing the "wrong direction" through the heart valves - this is checked at 20 week scan. Another indicator is "wrong size" - again, this was checked off.

Sorry cunty it took me too long to post that and you'd already written to confim it was the downs thing.

skihorse · 21/04/2010 10:07

cunty Please don't let these stats worry you, there's always something to cause worry. E.g., curly and I are on a thread about ninja womb-warriors and someone said "it could be because the baby is fitting"!

OP posts:
carrotsarenottheonlyvegetable · 21/04/2010 10:07

I've also heard that downs babies can be really quiet and still, not moving around like healthier babies.

carrotsarenottheonlyvegetable · 21/04/2010 10:08

So obviously I get paranoid when CS doesn't move much for a while

CurlyCasper · 21/04/2010 10:14

yes, I took that fitting thing with half a teaspoon of sodium chloride...

OkieCokie · 21/04/2010 10:16

Yes please don't worry. It is amazing what scans can see and if there was any concern for worry you would be advised.

carrotsarenottheonlyvegetable · 21/04/2010 10:25

"ninja womb-warriors"?
"fitting?"

?????

carrotsarenottheonlyvegetable · 21/04/2010 10:25

OOOHHH you mean having fits? WTF?

skihorse · 21/04/2010 10:29

carrots Yep, curly and I have little ninja people/highland-flingers and one girl said her consultant had said it could be a sign of "fitting". I told jailbait this and he reckoned it would a more constant "shivering" type feeling. But I don't know. It's clear though there's always some gumph to worry about.

OP posts:
CurlyCasper · 21/04/2010 10:33

Clearly the fits my baby is having only affect the far extremities of her limbs

She's taking after mum a lot now - kicking up a major fuss when food is required. I get hungry, she stamps her feet. That's my girl!

SomethingSuitablyWitty · 21/04/2010 10:37

Well, I will add my two pence, gleaned, as always, from my pregnancy bible (it really is a very good book, if a bit scary). Firstly, the stats are directly tied to age (this means that, based on absolutely nothing tangible, they will take a dive from one day to the next, as you celebrate your birthday). So you could be having the healthiest pregnancy in the world; they will still be lower than someone younger. The second thing is that there are so-called 'soft markers' for Downs in particular - ski mentioned the heart, but there is also the nasal bone, which I think is absent or appears later. Without a shadow of a doubt, they would have picked up on these if they were present!

So don't worry! Be like me (ha ha): carefree and not inclined to overanalyse!

carrotsarenottheonlyvegetable · 21/04/2010 10:46

It's not like cunty to menkul

skihorse · 21/04/2010 10:51

You're right rots this is very un-cunty - maybe she's got a case of 'ormones?

OP posts:
skihorse · 21/04/2010 11:17

Btw - I thought I'd share this with you to prove how very "zen" I am right now.

Yesterday jailbait was waxing lyrical about the top I described last week which gives me a bum-bump in addition to the baby-bump. I moaned saying it gave me a bum-bump, he said "maybe people just think you have a whale arse"! On which planet didn he utter that and expect to live?

As it is I've let him live - what he doesn't know (yet) is that he's changing the first 10 day's worth of nappies.

CUNextTuesday · 21/04/2010 11:22

Thanks guys, it was a moment of weakness

I know, it was 1:820 and nothing was mentioned at the scan and there is certainly nothing wrong with Rastus's movements or heart or anything (apart from persistent hiccups, which used to be cute, but are now just as irksome as having them yourself and the whole bump jerks upwards ), but it's just that WHY is everyone getting results in the 1000's - I'm not so old and there's nowt in the family and I was just starting to think that Hom is so unreconstructed that imperfections will not be tolerated and I'll have to tie a spotty hanky onto a stick and shuffle off to find my fortune elsewhere and live in a commune and I'll be all on my own for the rest of my days poking at the soil with a stick and drinking gin by the bucketlo.....

rollerbaby · 21/04/2010 11:26

Cunty one of my friends had 1 in 45 with her first and deeply regrets the amnio she then had. Seriously, I read somewhere that even with a higher risk stat it's still v v v low chance. But we all do have that chance. I'm going to have the NHS test next week so will be interesting to see how it compares to the private scan one.

OkieCokie · 21/04/2010 11:40

If someone said I had 1 in 820 chance of winning the charlie and the chocolate factory winning ticket, or the lottery or anything like that I would say well that is no chance then!

CurlyCasper · 21/04/2010 11:41

at John Deere website ski. However, even they are getting a bit "wet". I know a lad who recently modelled for their catalogue and he's hardly the rough, ready and rugged type...

Maybe ice road truckers would work?

skihorse · 21/04/2010 11:43

Don't worry cunty - there's NO way you'll end up on a commune alone - they're famous for being a no-holds-barred shag festival, you'll be getting it up you a dozen times daily!

OP posts:
CUNextTuesday · 21/04/2010 11:47

Perhaps I'm getting cold feet

ROFL cunty.

Mine was below 1:1000. I think. Something like 1:600 or something I think. I can't remember. That's how zen I am.

ski incredible your baby still has a father. Let him live but punish him first. 10 days of nappies is not enough.

cunty Have just had a discussion with two peeps here about how wonderful kids are. Babyhood is tough, but they sleep more than kids do so you can look at them and think how cute they are. But kids? They're just fabulous. I am SO in love with mine.
