HeffaMerryChristmas · 31/12/2009 12:15

LuckyC - I think the baby feels the heat a couple more degrees than you IYSWIM. That's what I was told last time anyway. They can't cool themselves down either. I love hot baths so have them anyway but I try not to stew for too long. I get very cold in pregnancy anyway.

We had scan yesterday and everything's fine - we're having a boy. I was actually quite disappointed as I've always wanted all girls (and was convinced this one was a girl) but I've got used to it now I've slept on it and I'm quite excited. It does mean we need to buy loads of new clothes which could be a bit tough though.

My BP is very high so I have to be on medication and monitored weekly by MWs so that'll be fun My consultant is being sensible this time round and wants to see me regularly at the hospital and has agreed reasonable limits so I don't get sent in every time my BP is a little raised (this happened last time and was a nightmare - the hospital is a long way and I don't drive so lots of annoying emergency trips). Apparently I need an extra scan at 30 weeks as well. She said I can choose whether or not to have a Caesarian because I had a third degree tear last time. DH and I have been talking about it all night and I think we'll have the section. She said the risk of tearing next time is actually lower but that if I did tear again I might not heal. My mum was in a similar situation with her first two children and apparently there is a genetic link (she tore again with her second and never really recovered).

Anyway, there was lots to think about so I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed but pleased that they seem to be managing my care a lot better this time.

memorylapse · 31/12/2009 13:12

wibbela..we are in wales, so do not have a PCT..its called the local health board.

Sadly our current gp has no duty of care to us as we are leaving the area..they give us one month to find another gp.
LHB have told us that they will try and assign us to the nearest available gp which has its books open..but unfortunately most have closed their books to new patients and the area we are moving to only has one gp for the whole area

ForcesSweetheart · 31/12/2009 13:23

Congrats on your scan and baby boy Heffa. I woulda kinda liked a boy so I'd have one of each but it's certainly a lot cheaper not having to buy boys things now. I'm sure you'll get lots of people giving you stuff.

Re the hot baths, I've always thought you should avoid raising your body temperature for the reasons the others have already given. I only take warm baths right now.

We spent Christmas in Glasgow with the family, which was nice, but so glad to be home. I'm still feeling sick a lot of the time (lost 2lb in the last 2 weeks giving me an 8lb gain overall - at almost 23wks). I've also had a thumping headache for a week now, and it's constant. Paracetamol isn't helping much. I went to the out of hours doc in Glasgow who checked my BP and various neuro tests of my responses etc and couldn't find anything to be concerned about so basically said I was stuck with it unless it suddenly got much worse, I got numbness or slurred speech, or started being violently sick.

Seeing the diabetic ante-natal team on Monday so will discuss with them. Then on Wednesday I've got another scan - the detailed feotal heart scan. Looking forward to seeing Molly again, although I'm sure she's fine - she's kicking away regularly now.

schipo · 31/12/2009 14:08

Bugger, I hadn't made the connection between having hot baths being like having a temperature and have been having 40 degree baths regularly.

Something else to worry about

Trying to reassure myself that they weren't long baths.

Does anyone know what sort of damage there'd be if baths were too hot?

sweetkitty · 31/12/2009 14:37

I have this weird bug thing today, been up since 5.30am so v tired but am shivering constantly cannot get warm even under duvet, feel sick, have sore head, feel a bit dizzy too oh and a sore throat and cough, having paracetamol and staying under duvet as much as I can do.

I thought the hot baths thing was for the mother not the baby as you cannot regulate your temperature as well when pregnant and you may get too hot and get all dizzy. I think the baby is well protected inside and you would have to have a high fever or something for your core temp to change. I'm a hot shower girl myself can't remember last time I had a bath.

FS - glad you had a nice Christmas, cold up here isn't it? Just started snowing again too fed up with it, it's too icy to go anywhere really went out yesterday and we were slipping all over the place.

ML - utterly shocking you have been told that, I would complain to anyone that will listen, they have to care for you plain and simple do not be fobbed off.

Heffa - congrats on having a boy, it's a girl you have already (I forget who has what)? I am so certain this one is a girl, I think I would be in shock for a week if they said boy, DD1 already says she has 3 little sisters. They are all so utterly different in personality that I don't really think what's between their legs matters TBH. Just wish everyone else would stop going on about us wanting a boy as if a girl would be unwelcome, or you get the other one, the "oh well as long as it's healthy" Another girl will be a joy I am sure.

I'm off under the duvet again.

LuckyC · 31/12/2009 15:16

sorry james, of course it was you. thanks and to heffa and forces and sweetkitty for hot bath answers. Think the accursed devil boiler might be on the way out so probably a moot point. Shame, poor baby!

Heffa, sorry about high BP. Hope it resolves itself. Sounds like a good decision re the section.

Oh yes - my friend Esther who has just had a 3rd scan today at 30-odd weeks discovered that the girl she was told she was having at 20 weeks is a BOY.

So, they do get it wrong!

memorylapse · 31/12/2009 16:44

schipo..try not to worry about hot baths..its used to be an old wives tale that having a hot bath would bring on a miscarriage..but its not true..as SK said the risk is more to you that you will probably feel a bit queer if you sit in a bath thats TOO hot....saunas are a bad idea though as this would be a risk to baby..

SK ..so sorry to hear you are feeling poorly..theres definitely some odd bugs doing the rounds..Ive had a dicky tummy since christmas day and last night had soinning dizziness and had to lie down..

Heffa..sorry to hear about your high bp..hopefully the meds will help..they will monitor you very closely too.

right Im off to get ready for work..would have prefered an early night but never mind!

Happy New Year everyone

ForcesSweetheart · 31/12/2009 18:12

www.babycenter.com/406_is-it-safe-to-take-hot-baths-while-im-pregnant_1245313.bc how hot is 100 degrees F? I haven't the foggiest. Seems to be saying if it's so hot you have to ease your foot in then it's too hot, but otherwise it's fine.

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 31/12/2009 21:16

100 degrees F is 37.7 degrees C, so only a tiny bit higher than blood heat! that's rubbish! Sorry but I'll continue to have a very warm bath (not mega hot) there's no point in lukewarm baths is there? they don't warm you up or even relax you. Schipo don't worry about the baths you've already had, I doubt you've been lying there sweating in scorching hot water!

Hey has anyone else been told they have an anterior placenta? (placenta on the front wall of the womb) I'm still feeling movements, just not as many as with my first baby.

memorylapse · 31/12/2009 22:01

I had an anterior placenta with dd2..it was a bind as I didnt really feel her movements very well until I was in the late stages

Yorky · 01/01/2010 08:21

Happy new year to you all

Sweetpeasmum · 01/01/2010 08:58

Happy New Year everyone. Here's to good health and happiness in 2010.

ML is it possible to become a temporary patient at a new surgery until a place comes up for you all? I'm a temp patient at DH and DS's surgery for ante natal care as my med centre doesn't do it. It's worked out ok. Last time I was looked after by the hospital where I had him and didn't need to find another GP so that might be another option for you.

I am on the early shift here as DH is having a lie-in this am, it is nice not having a hangover! Mind you we had a quiet night in and even managed a snooze in front of the telly. I seem to have turned into my parents!

ForcesSweetheart · 01/01/2010 10:56

Happy New Year folks. Another quiet night in front of the telly here. Still managed to be a pretty late one - got to bed around 2.30. Thankfully DD is generally great in the morning. When she wakes up she just lies in bed singing til one of us goes in to get her up - I know we're in for a shock when Molly gets here! This morning her singing didn't start til 9.45 (one banana, two banana through the baby monitor was our alarm clock).
Off to a 4 year old's birthday party back in Aldershot today so have to put our traditional steak pie dinner on hold til tomorrow. Hope you all have a lovely day.

MoggMum · 01/01/2010 11:08

Happy New Year to you all . Went out for Curry last night with the family - was great and even treated myself to a small Cobra!

James I was told I have an anterior placenta at my scan on Tuesday. It explains why I've felt no movement yet and has put my mind at rest. They don't seem concerned but it's a shame not to feel any kicks

Off for a cycle along the seafront now (while I still can!). Cold but sunny here for a change.

JamesAndTheGiantBanana · 01/01/2010 11:32

Happy new year all!

Moggmum I'm sure you'll feel movements any day now, they say it just takes longer with an anterior placenta, (and if it's your first you might not know what to be feeling out for yet, so you could have already had small movements and assumed they were wind or whatever!) At this stage they're more likely to feel like little prods and stretching than butterfly flutterings or bubbles popping. Easy to confuse with trapped wind really!

And omg, wind! I've never been so windy in my life as I have the past few weeks! Is anyone else 's family suffering? My dp won't accept that it's a pregnancy thing, no matter how much I attempt to blame it on the baby, but it can't still be blamed on christmas sprouts, it's january! lol

kateyjane · 01/01/2010 12:00

Happy New Year everyone!
Another quiet night in here, but it was fabulous. Pajamas, TV, lovely meal and a glass of cava - heaven! It has been years since we stayed in, but enjoyed it so much think we will do that from now on.
Wishing everyone a happy, healthy and eventful 2010!

memorylapse · 01/01/2010 12:52

sweetpeasmum..no you cant register as a temp patient..as the GPS have closed their books to any new patients..if worst comes to worst I will just have to get my scripts from the hospital pharmacy instead...Im writing to the LHB to request to be assigned to a surgery..what a palava...

Happy New Year everyone..we can now say our babies are due THIS year

Worked yesterday evening , then back home by ten for party food cooked by DH and rang in the new year with a cup of tea!!

Carikube · 01/01/2010 12:58

Happy New year to you all!
We had a quiet night at home as well though there was some bubbly involved

Still didn't manage to get to bed until 1.30am and then DD woke up screaming at 4am so I'm not feeling too perky today.

We're supposed to be heading off to friends for drinks this lunchtime but DH has only just decided that he doesn't feel like going. Why does he decide this after I've gone to the effort of getting myself and DD ready?!

RacquelWelsh · 01/01/2010 15:42

Happy New Year ladies! Hope you all had a good evening. DH forced me out last night to TWO NYE parties, both within a mile of each other as we're still snowed in. Wondered if I was the only pregnant woman hiking through a foot of snow at 11.45 at night from one party to another. Beautiful moonlit night and I stayed up until 4am, DH fell asleep before me. Life in the elderly primagravida yet eh?! Have noticed how loud people are when you're the only sober one in the room...!

20 week scan on Monday (if I can get out or it's a 2 mile walk into town to get a bus) and have just started feeling thuds and bumps in the last few days.

Hope 2010 is a good one for us all

itshappenedagain · 01/01/2010 17:31

HI!
glad to hear that i wasnt the only on not stay in... was glad of my pjs and central heating. i used to make such a big deal of NYE before i had DS...so have done my share of freezing my ass off in town, so can be excused for a few years.

Is strange to think that i will be responsible for TWO other people by this time next year. and it does pertrify me sometimes...until i reassure myself that i can do this.

have been out with Ds to the park this morning and done some painting with him the afternoon, have a raost in the oven at the mo so feed him and get him to bed so i can have a sort out of yet more stuff.

hope all are well and here is to a fantatic 2010! and a much excitement for all those having there scans soon!

Hi everyone

Happy New Year.

Congratulations to all those with recent scans.

We got back last night from being down south with my family, we had a lovely time and it always makes me homesick . Glad to be home though!

Oh, I'm 23wks today! The last two weeks have flown by, although I expect the next few to feel quite slow as we don't have a lot on. That will be nice though as we still have plenty of snow on the ground.

Regarding the hot baths, I have been enjoying some hottish baths, I just don't have it covering all of my body.

I am also feeling a bit coldy today, hopefully a few days in my own house will get me right again.

memorylapse · 02/01/2010 12:15

congrats and welcome Nimk

BRB..I cant beleive Im 23 weeks on tuesday..its a big milestone for me..Im looking forward to getting to 24 weeks..fingers crossed..

schipo · 02/01/2010 12:40

Wishing you all a happy new year too.

Good to read all your perspectives on bathing. I've tried to embrace the idea of cold baths (I agree James, 37.7 degrees is definitely a cold bath ) and it's not working. Had a lovely hot shower this morning though so I'm sure I'll survive. I think i'll certainly risk a bath or two too - not too deep, not for too long. I'd say I've definitely been feeling movement recently which has stopped me worrying quite so much. I think it's most noticeable when I wake up in the morning. Perhaps it's just that the baby is busier then, but also i wouldn't normally experience wind at that time of the day, so I'm more confident about putting anything I do feel down to movement.

Hope your move is going smoothly memorylapse - are you in new house now? I'm looking forward to 24 weeks too - as a milestone at least. Not so sure I'm going to enjoy not being able to bend over

Welcome to Nimk

I can't believe how quickly holidays have passed - back to work on monday and on top of that a busy schedule of visits to house i'm supposed to be buying with builders, midwife visits and the anomaly scan. I wish it was called something else. Fingers crossed already. Congrats to everyone who has already got through theirs.

memorylapse · 02/01/2010 14:10

schipo..Ive been having lovely hot showers..couldnt do without them in this cold house! sounds like you are going to be busy in Jan
we move on monday..it cant come a minute too soon!

Im feeling a bit stessed today..with the move etc..also Ive got to do my tax return when we move..Im working all weekend..have a commision for a bump paint on monday then straight off to an evening job..so will be driving lots...just want to put my feet up
