wibblela · 09/12/2009 21:57

Welcome Mummymunchkins You are due the same day as me Although this is my first. You have your scan the day before mine - they have told me that it'll be when I am over 20 weeks so I won't have to drink so much - will be 21+5.

We've decided not to find out the sex - going to wait until baby is born (c: People are convinced both ways - will keep them all guessing

Felt another thud this evening - it's very weird! Friend in Australia said that pregnancy was an alien parasite incubation! She is a very funny woman

brightredballoon · 09/12/2009 22:30

Hi everyone

had my 20wk scan today (at 19+4), the baby gave me a lovely kick that I felt with my hand this morning (had been worried about lack of movements). The scan went well and DH is convinced he saw a dangly bit and the baby's head and body looks really similar to DSs so we think its a boy.

Den sorry to hear you don't get a 20wk scan, I only got one this time (3rd child) as I am under a different hospital. However yes I have heard that anyone booking in from December will now be offered the 20wk scan at the hospital where I had my other two children so hopefully that will be for everyone in the country.

Hobnob please don't worry about having the vaccine, scroll down this page to the weekly reactions to the SF vaccines documents I felt quite reassured after reading them.

SK when have you booked your 20wk scan for?

Sweetpeasmum glad your consultant appointment went well. I originally was down for a VBAC hence me going to a different hospital to before so I could use their midwife led unit - I really felt it would be the best place to achieve a VBAC for me as I will also be extremely on edge about the baby's wellbeing.

DH and I had a lovely days shopping in Town before going to the scan, I need to schedule a couple more days like that before DC3 arrives, felt liberating shopping without a buggy and eating lunch hot!

Sweetpeasmum · 09/12/2009 23:13

Thanks BRB and Mollybob. I'm happy with the arrangements as they've decided to see me at the hospital at 37 weeks to make sure this one's the right way up (or down). I'm lucky in that I feel ok about the last birth, other than blood loss, milk slow to come through, etc, etc. That doesn't mean I want to do it again though! After so many people telling me it was the most wonderful experience of their lives (mostly blokes) I was already convinced that it would be a little less fun than they made out.

HeffaMerryChristmas · 10/12/2009 07:59

AnAngelWithin - glad the little girl was OK, what a shock for her Dad.

Mollybob - I really wish there was proper support for BFing rather than money being spent on so many other things. DD wouldn't BF and there was no support in hospital at all Sorry, I get a bit ranty on this because it annoyed me that I had 3 days of people telling me BF was best but no-one actually helping me to do it so I left unable to feed, and feeling incredibly guilty (I ended up expressing for 2 months, but then MWs and HVs kept saying that me doing that must be difficult for DH )

Den26 - it sucks that you can't get a 20 week scan. Could you try talking to a different MW and see if they'll refer you?

Schipo - thanks for the dandelion/nettle tea tip, I might give that a try.

Sweetpeasmum - glad you're happy with your arrangements.

BRB - congratulations on your scan, that must have been lovely We're looking forward to a quiet child-free day out in town before our 20 week scan as well!

AnAngelWithin · 10/12/2009 10:33

morning all. Think we will soon fill this thread up to !!

ds2 (he is 5years old) has actually come round to the thought of having a baby in the house! He wasn't impressed when we told him, but i have just stood back, answered any questions he had and left him to it as such. Then all of a sudden last night, he came to give me a cuddle before bed and said 'I'm hugging the baby....hello baby....hope you are ok and nice and warm in there....see you after easter...i love you....nightnight' then this morning at school, he gave my tummy a kiss and said byebye to the baby as well so sweet!!

BRB glad your scan went ok!

Den I would try and push for a scan if i was you!

Schipo I don't think I am brave enough to try that tea!! haha

Sweetpeasemum glad the appointment went ok.

Mummymunchkins · 10/12/2009 10:47

Thanks Scipo and Den26 Den26 sorry to hear you can't get 20 week scan. I didn't realise this was not available for all pregnant women.

Thanks Wibblela interesting about your scan as my hosp seemed a bit disapproving that I was away on 24th Dec when they wanted me to have my scan! Good luck with your scan. I am looking forward to seeing baby again!

It;s funny isn't everyone has a view on what you are having or size of baby etc all rubbish usually.

Surprise is good too, I didn't want to know with DS2 but DH did and as as I had insisted on knowing with DS1 I couldn't really argue.

Mollybob know what you mean MW's in my hosp were very disapproving of anyone who didn't want to BF but DS1 wouldn't BF at first and every MW just shoved him on in a different way which I couldn't master on my own. I was lucky though as an independent adviser happened to come round whilst I was in hosp and said the best way is skin on skin contact and it really worked. Actually it was some time after I had gone home that I managed to bf with clothes on either me or DS1. Also the easiest way to bf ie with DC's head in crook of your arm was not actually taught to me in hosp but read it in a booklet that came with my Avent hand bmilk expressor.

memorylapse · 10/12/2009 11:39

Im quite shocked that not everyone gets a 20 week scan..I always assumed this was routine
Den in your position I would speak to your midwife as I think given your previous history you have genuine concerns and Im quite surprised that they are not offering you a 20 week scan.

Angel..Emmy is the same age as your DS2..and nis very excited about the baby..I think she is expecting it to look like baby anabel though!..she keeps asking when the baby is going to be born..4 months is a long time when you are only 5

Re swine flu..I agree with mollybob..there are so many pregnant ladies having the jab..that it was only a matter of time before a loss occurred which would be attributed to the jab..but more than likely co incidental..it would be like saying going to tesco was dangerous because someone had a miscarriage after doing their shopping.if that makes any sense..

no one has had the cheek to call me fatty yet..but I have a pointy stick ready for when they do!

welcome mummymunchkins..glad everything is going well

mollybob..I get so cross that there still seems to be a lack of breast feeding support

When I had dd1..I was so lucky that the hospital I was in were really supportive of breast feeding mums, I was 18 when I had dd and struggled to BF and was that close to turning to bottle feeding, but the hospital were brilliant..they actually kept me in for 8 days until BF was established..

Brightredballoon..lovely to hear the scan went well..I have mine in less than 2 weeks and feel very nervous..

woke this morning to my stomach doing the samba!..I cant belive how quickly the movements have gone from being barely tere..to definitely there..baby seems to be active late at night and early morning..

Im off to cheshire oaks in a min with dm..

itshappenedagain · 10/12/2009 13:00

hello all!

den i would ask to be refered due to previous history...or turn up and tell them you have a scan booked...sure they wont turn you away!

mollybob- i didnt get any breastfeeeing support with Ds, untill i went to a mums group where we all struggled through thogether, we eventually managed to get someone in to help us, and then i trained as a breastfeding support worker. i continued breastfeeding Ds untill 35 months and even then i would have continued but he went of the milk ( later found out i was preg!) am hoping to do the same again but will have to see how things go.

the other thing i noticed in my pack thing that they gave me, is that all new mums get a 36 week scan where i am...dont know the pupose of this but apparently is rountine here (Liverpool)
ive been to the midwife this morning, with DS, and hearing the heartbeat again was fab, definitely plenty of movements! good news is since bleeding has stopped i dont have to go back for another 5 weeks! yeah! if all continues to go well then i may be allowed my homebirth rather than the stupid delievry suite all monitored and chemicals, or asa compromise Midwifery led unit! so am feeling much more optimistic today!
anyway ladies im off to go and get lunch and continue tidying...am determined to have everywhere clutter and mess free by 18th!

30ish · 10/12/2009 19:01

Evening all!

Not posted for a long time - hope everyone is well!

Isn't it silly how everyone gets offered different support re scans and care? I had anappointment with the midwife yesterday but it all seemed a bit pointless. She just took my blood pressure and dipped in my sample. That was it.
mollybob that you heard the heartbeat. The midwife didn't go anywhere near my stomach or listen to the heartbeat. I was very disappointed tbh! Next scan on the 29th Dec and we will ask the sex. DD has said that we can 'keep it' if it is a girl. Just wondering what we will do with it if it is a boy .

mollybob · 10/12/2009 19:16

love that 30ish - when DS was a few days old he asked me if we could give DD to lost property - but he got used to her (more or less) He was 3 when she was born.

I'm so lucky that I can play with a doppler at work and hear the HB whenever I want. I wasn't offered a 20 week scan with DD but I was born with a kidney abnormality so had a good reason to insist on one with DD.

MoggMum · 10/12/2009 19:19

schipo thanks for tip re dandelion & nettle - might give it a go. I'm also planning to work for as long as possible but starting to think that a couple of weeks off before the birth would be nice. Also considering extending my maternity leave to at least 6 months or longer (I was only going to take 4 months) if I can convince my employer to pay more than SMP!

pigleychez · 10/12/2009 21:10

Blimey this thread moves fast..

Nice new thread

Wibblea- Yay for the movements

Hob- Try not to dwell on that lady losing her baby. Who knows if it wouldnt of happened anyway

Lucky- Enjoy Africa!

Lizzie- Good luck with the house move.. Hope it all goes smoothly

Happenedagain- We dont plan to find out the sex. We didnt with DD and enjoyed the suprise at the end of a very long labour!

MummyMunchkins- Welcome aboard.

RacquelWelsh- You too

LolaAnn- I too feel an obvious lump in the mornings, usually on my right hand side.

Den - that you dont get the 20 week scan

BRB- Glad the scan went well

Angel- Your DS sounds so sweet. My DD (16mths) points to my tummy saying baby. Although she like to lift up my top and put her finger in my belly button before saying it!

My gag reflex seems to working overdrive lately. Just cough makes gag then be sick. Its so annoying. I wasnt sick at all with DD.

We are all feeling abit down here today. DH's Nan has been having a few funny turns lately and had a couple of falls. Well today she was found collapsed on the floor after another fall. Was taken to hospital with a heart rate of only 26. Seems she must of banged her head on the way down as she has a small bleed to the head. Hospital have said they wont operate because of her age and other heath issues. At the moment we are just waiting to hear whats going to happen.

We only buried my Uncle last week

wibblela · 10/12/2009 22:06

oh pigleychez not good at all, strife in the family and sickness you'll have to let us know how it goes.

We are already in bed with milk and chocolate

Only felt the baby once today, when I woke up - want it to happen again!

I am hoping I will be able to bf, am actually looking forward to it The MW hsa pushed it alot already - even asked me early on when I had not really thought about it! Pg brain an' all that!

Having to have baby in a consultant led unit - because of my medical condition, there was no discussion about the mw led unit! Think I am going to do all I can before I let those docs near me Obviously the baby is my highest concern and I am DH's highest concern.

I love hearing about how other children are reacting to the news - they have all made me smile

itshappenedagain · 10/12/2009 22:09

pigleychez- sorry to hear about the news about DHs nan, are they going to be keeping her in long term or will they be providing care for her. hope she gets better soon. i also understand about the gag reflex...went through that with Ds although was never sick all the way through the pregnancy.

My Ds nearly dropped me in it with my nan this evening, she still doesnt know but a piece about babies on the news tonight prompted him to tell my nan ( i wasnt here at the time) that there was a baby in mummy belly wiating to come out...i suppose its my fault really for taking him with me to all appointments he has heard the heartbeat twice and alsio likes to sit and feel for movements of a morning. i just laughed, whilst going beetroot by the way!

Morph2 · 10/12/2009 22:32

had my 3rd mw appointment today and got my downs risk blood test results, 1 in 5100 which i was really really pleased about given my age (36).

MW also listened to the heartbeat, took a few moments to find until i said could it be over on the left as i'd felt some movements, she tried and it was. You could hear it moving about loads on the doppler and it made the MW laugh it was moving so much, she said i must have a little footballer in there

pigleychez · 10/12/2009 22:37

Thanks for the thoughts
Happenedagain- Not really sure whats happening at the mo. We are currently taking each day as it comes. Hard as we are only hearing things third hand through BIL as all our family live miles away. We plan to visit at the weekend all being well. Everytime the phone goes you cringe expecting to hear the worst

HeffaMerryChristmas · 11/12/2009 08:09

AnAngelWithin - how sweet with your DS2! DD has hugging my tummy yet and patting it but only for giggles!

Pigley - so sorry to hear about your DH's Nan, it's really hard when there's something like that going on I hate the feeling of dreading the phone ringing. I hope everything works out OK.

Mummymunchkins · 11/12/2009 10:31

Thanks for the explanation LolaAnn

Thanks for the welcome memorylapse and pigleychez.

pigleychez so sorry to hear about DH's Nan hope she gets better really soon.

Morph2 congrats on your downs blood test results.

LotusPalm · 11/12/2009 11:28

Hello ladies,

Just had 20 week scan at 19+2 (baby still dating 20 weeks though, and hospital wont change the date!) - everyhting is all where it should be which is good. We also found out that we are having a boy!

I'm still in a little bit of shock as i was convinced it was a girl. Very glad we found out!

Good luck to everyone with scan over the next couple of weeks, and congrats suey on your amnio results, your little girl and your holiday!

I'm off away for our belated honeymoon this evening - 3 weeks in thailand here we come!

Merry Christmas to everyone too!

itshappenedagain · 11/12/2009 11:40

good morning all!

Lotus have a fab time on your honeymoon.

im still debating as to finding out sex or not, although was nice to know last ime in the end. Ds is convinced he is having a sister...i think it may be a brother?

I am now strating to look forward to christmas, especially as this will be my last with only DS and next yaer, all being well then there will be another to add to the madness. im going to collect Ds bike today and have planned to go to town next tuesday to get all final bits, finances are very tight at the moment so everyone will only be getting something small, but hey.

i think due to the comment of my Ds last night i will have to tell my nan today, was going to rty and keep quiet until after 20 week scan, but hopefully wont tell the rest of the family until then. dont drink or smoke so part from getting fat ther will be no obvious signs, may just walk around with a pie in each hand for the next month and hope for the best.

AnAngelWithin · 11/12/2009 11:40

pigleychez , thinking of you and your family

lotus, have a fab time!! merry christmas to you too!

OP posts:
Hollyoaks · 11/12/2009 11:55

heffa my hospital was very similar when it came to breastfeeding support. Lots of people available to shove her on but she never actually attached properly. They then reccomended nipple shields but I wasn't shown how to use them either and ended up with really sore and cracked nipples. I gave up after 4 days and felt really guilty too.

Angel your son kissing your bump made me well up, these blooming hormones have me a mess most days. My nephew gave me a cuddle this morning for no reason, it was lovely.

den26 shocked you won't get a 20 week scan with your history. I would push for it through the hospital rather than the midwife.

pigley I'm with you on the gag reflex, brushing teeth and coughing are the worst followed by dh after football. to hear about your dh's nan.

lotus congrats on the boy, have a lovely honeymoon.

Welcome to all the newbies, no movements yet, still feel sick in the morning but much better overall, 20 week scan in January but won't be finging out the sex, we like the surprise after the labour (will be shocked if its a boy though!). No idea on names yet, lots of possibilities but no definates. Hope everyone is well.

HeffaMerryChristmas · 11/12/2009 12:14

LotusPalm - congratulations on your scan and on a little boy Hope you have a fab time on your honeymoon, lucky thing!

Itshappenedagain - I like your plan of wandering around with a pie in your hand!

Hollyoaks - that does sound v.similar There were a couple of very physical 'counsellors' who forced her on even though she was screaming, told her off for being a bad girl and then left me alone claiming it was working because it was hurting (it wasn't). DH researched on MN and asked them if I should try nipple shields; they shrugged and said 'maybe' but they did sort of work (just enough for them to discharge me anyway - up until then they refused to discharge me because DD wasn't BFing but wouldn't offer any support ). We had to beg for an breastpump too so I could try expressing but they told me off for asking. We got one eventually which let us get milk into her. By the time we got home and went to the very fab, very BF-friendly MW-led unit next door it was too late I think We got great support from local MWs but she never did latch on and eventually my milk went so I had to stop expressing.

Sorry, ranted on a bit there! I'm so sorry you had a bad experience as well, it really shouldn't happen. It makes me so angry that the support still isn't there in some places despite all the campaigns.

LolaAnn · 11/12/2009 14:21

piggley so sorry to hear about your DHs nan gosh how horrible.

I'm very naive having never really been around babies and I didn't realise so many people have problems BF. I hope I can do it, I know they really push it in nz so hopefully there is a bit of a better support system there? Some of these stories are very scary.

LotusPalm have fun on your honeymoon!!!

I just aquired a set of scales and well proved I have been eating toooo much. Really need to get it under control as we are going to Egypt for some sun in January and don't really want to scare too many people with my cellulite thighs haha

pigleychez · 11/12/2009 16:14

Lotus-yay for the little boy. at your honeymoon. We did Thailand for our Honeymoon and loved it!

Happenedagain- Loving the image of a pie in each hand

I too had a bad time trying to breast feed.I managed to express for the first 6 weeks as I and others had so much trouble attaching her.
LolaAnn- I too thought it would be easy and something that I could just do. Dont beat yourself up though if it doesnt work out for you. I spent many a time in floods of tears feeling like a failiure. Looking back now I know it doesnt help anyone.

Well DH nan seems to be abit brighter today and telling FIL/her son off! Not sure whats happened bout the bleed to the brain but im guessing that not too bad now. She has been in theatre today having a pacemaker fitted. That should hopefully regulate her heartrate stopping her falling over and having funny turns. fingers crossed

Friends are coming round tonight and we getting a chinese takeaway- yummy... im craving it already!!
