Had my scan this week - looks like yet another boy (for the list, it's my first). Still getting used to the idea but DH seems very happy. Got given champagne by my dad to celebrate ok anomaly scan - felt very naughty drinking it but boy did it taste nice (and the baby was happily kicking away during the night afterwards which made me feel better). Going to visit inlaws this weekend - am expecting much excitement there too, next week is going to feel rather flat I fear.

Toady Remember every baby is different and it's not uncommon to feel nothing until 22 weeks.

Adding to the craving question, mine are grapefruit juice and choclate Nesquick - though thankfully not together.

I feel huge too, though I've only put on 12lbs (22.5weeks) which my book tells me is about spot on. I put on almost 4 stone with my DD, so I'm keen not to repreat that experience.

Is anyone else suffering with heartburn?

AdelaideJo · 20/11/2009 22:23

Neeko i have horrible heartburn but i'm putting it down to the outsized bump already (oh and the constant man-sized portions of course).

Tums are fab!

chegirl · 20/11/2009 22:45

Toady this is my 4th birth child and I have only just began to feel definate movements. I am 20 weeks tommorow. With DS3 I was feeling him really early. So I was a bit worried when it took so long with this one but they are all different.

Feeling a bit anxious at the moment generally. Having a bit of work done in the house and the dust is freaking me out. I dont cope well with dust (long story). Also have to do repeat urine test. There were nitrates in my last one although I dont have any other sypmptoms of UTI. The thing I cope with worse than dust is medical jiggery pokery! I am drinking gallons of water in the hope I will clear any lurking nasties.

Scan on Weds. Getting nervy as midwife commented that baby was a bit small when I saw her (drop in) on Monday. Now I am worrying they will tell me something awful on Weds and I will be catapulted into all sorts of hospital type things

I am also worried that they wont be able to tell me the sex of the baby for some reason. I really need to know.

I am a right old bundle of neurosis at the moment

tostaky · 21/11/2009 17:32

I think it is safe to assume that most of those who are expecting a surprise, willl have a girl! We cant have a boys-only thread!!!
Glad to see that anomaly scans are good for everybody!

pillia78 · 22/11/2009 07:46

thighs and adelaide my bump is HUGE, with my previous 2 I barely showed at all and had to have weekly scans so this is a bit of a shock! The woman who sits opposite me at work is due in February and is tiny but she smokes heavily (Which DOES make a difference!!) and keeps making comments about the size of my bump and on Friday she told me I had put weight on around my face, how mean is that?!!!! However, I love having a bump just worried about getting bigger!!

thedollshouse · 22/11/2009 09:53

pillia78 I have had the size comments too, in my last pregnancy people commented on how I had put weight on everywhere and then they wonder why in this pregnancy that I'm being very anti-social and not bothering to meet up with them!

rumpleteaser · 22/11/2009 13:03

My bump is big, I love it!!! I wasn't sure what to expect but in the last week or so it seems to have gone from a small blubber belly to a baby belly!
Saw a photo of myself from the other day tho and boobs look bigger my than my head... eeek

AdelaideJo · 22/11/2009 15:14

Glad to hear i'm not the only mammoth woman!

My tummy is so big now, that when I went to try on some new boots that arrived yesterday, I actually can't sit down and bend over to pull them on (no zips, knee high) without being unable to breathe properly, because the belly is just in the way and squashing my lungs!...I can see that i'm going to get about a months wear out of them and then it'll be into slip-on somethings all Winter .

Talking about size, someone said to me the other day, considering your 5 and a half months you don't look that big then went to my mothers and said I looked like a whale and I should watch what I eat cause you don't want to put too much weight on!! I said that I'm so happy to be this far along I don't care how much weight I put on.....it takes 9 months to put the weight on so it's going to take 9 months to come off again....so there!!

I can't win!! [now where did those minstrels go?]

nicnacinoonoo · 23/11/2009 08:30

i wish id gone off chocolate again, it seems to be my main craving this time.

my bump is disappointing this time. last time it was really neat and hard and a proper up front bump. this time its still not properly hard and definitely more blurgh than all up front iykwim. i still just feel really fat rather than properly pregnant. been out of all my normal pants since right at the start of the pregnancy.

my notes say the next check is 25 weeks, does anyone know if they get in touch with us like the first 1 or if we have to book it like the 16 week one? its changed so much since last time, with ds i had seen the midwife a lot more by this point.

Bungo101 · 23/11/2009 09:54

Had my 20 week scan, they confirmed we're having a girl! Told my DS that he is having a baby sister, but he insists its a boy, and is very excited. Hope he still is when he realises it really is a girl and is wearing pink

I realised just yesterday how huge I am when I saw myself sideways in the mirror, although I must say I'm bigger in the evenings for some reason! I put on 3.5 stone last time so I won't be surprised if it's the same again this time. Somehow I lost all of it and a bit more after DS, so there is hope!

My bump is quite big. I sometimes feel embarrassed when people ask when I'm due and I say April. I think they expect me to say I've got 4 weeks to go or something. I have had one rude person pointing horrified and saying "is it twins?"
Finally have my anomaly scan this week and can't wait. However my mil is being rather annoying about it, silly cow. see other thread

spaghettina · 23/11/2009 17:55

I had my anomaly scan on Friday and am happy to be adding a splash of pink to this thread - yes, it's a girl!
I wasn't that surprised as I felt it all along.
I have to go back again this week to finish off the scan as she was in totally the wrong position the whole time, and no amount of walking round the block would shift her. Quite happy to go back if it means we get a better look!

spaghettina · 23/11/2009 18:00

Also, my bump is quite big too - but then I've always had a big tummy/no abs. Seem to have put on 6kg (13lbs) in the past 7 weeks or so, and today my doctor suggested I start watching my weight and gave me a diet sheet to follow
But then again, this is Milan, where women subsist on mineral water and cocktail olives to get into their size 8 jeans...

thedollshouse · 23/11/2009 19:29

Had my scan today. Its another boy! Ds will be over the moon but we aren't going to tell anyone the sex until after the birth.

wow, another boy, this is a proper blue thread, must be the season for boys....

the time is going really fast now, does anyone else feel like this? Is anyone else thinking about breastfeeding, I want to give it a real go, so any experienced mners I would be glad of any advice/tips cause I really am clueless......my mother and sister keeps telling me thats it's really hard and I won't last a week but I'm determined......

Thanks in advance ladies xx

Trying4Baby1 · 23/11/2009 20:46

nina I think you're probably best to phone about the appointment as every hospital seems to do it differently. I don't have my 20wk scan for another two weeks but I already have my appointment booked for 25wks. It was booked when I went in for my bloods at 15wks.

Hoops - I breastfed DS for 6 mths. Agree with Dwayne about getting some Lansinoh cream - it's quite expensive but worth it. I smothered it on after every feed and I managed to avoid cracked nipples. I think it is the cracked nipples that tends to cause people to give up BFing as the pain can be excrutiating.

I would also recommend a book called "What to expect when you're brestfeeding...and what if you can't" by Clare Byam-Cook. I read it in advance of the baby arriving and it really helped me understand better the ins and outs of breastfeeding, latching on position etc so I felt more confident with what I was doing.

But please don't be afraid to give your baby some formula if you really don't think the BFing is working. My sister was determined to persevere with BFing at the expense of her DD. SHe ended up back in hospital as the baby had lost so much weight and got 3 bouts of mastitis before relenting and introducing a bottle of formula. The baby thrived after that and never looked back, and she says she wished that she hadn't been so stubborn and had listened to what her baby and body were telling her.

Sorry to write such an essay . Hope it helps!

nicnacinoonoo · 24/11/2009 08:38

i really wanted to breastfeed with ds but i only managed to get him latched on properly twice in the first 4 days. and that was with lots of help for the first 3 days because i was in the hospital after a cs. they had to take him and give him a bottle in the night after testing to see if he was getting anything one of the nights in the hospital. the midwives said he was a tongue sucker and thats why it was hard as he gave the illusion of being latched on when he wasnt. obviously it felt totally different when he actually was latched on. anyway i gave up after the 4th day and expressed a bottle from each breast. i didnt seem to get any more milk back in after expressing those two bottles so he went on to formula then.

my midwife kept telling me not to give up, but when i explained everything to my health visitor she said i'd done the right thing as if i was getting stressed trying to do it then the baby would be getting stressed etc. i was a bit that i couldnt do it properly but i told myself at least he got the first bit and i tried which is more than others do.

anyway it hasn't put me off and im going to try again this time. thanks for the tip on the book zeeky im going to buy that and study it

thedollshouse · 24/11/2009 08:47

Hoops Speaking as a failed breastfeeder I would advise that you read up on the subject as much as you can in advance of the birth, you will receive lots of conflicting advice so it is important that you feel confident before you start. Don't take advice from people who aren't supportive of bfing I had lots of pressure to give up from family members and I think it was partly to do with their own self esteems, they didn't bf or tried and failed and therefore felt undermined by a bfing mother, I know that sounds crazy but in the case of relatives I think that played a part. Insist on a breastfeeding counsellor visiting you whilst you are on the ward I was in desperate need to see someone, she eventually came just before I was discharged, was hijacked by the "perfect" mother on the ward and didn't have time to see me. Do what ever you can to get the support you need even if you or your partner have to shout and stamp your feet.

As Zeeky says don't beat yourself up if it doesn't work out, I have to say that I was a complete wreck and didn't enjoy my baby until I made the decision to switch to formula. It doesn't put me off though, I can see where I went wrong and feel confident in my ability to succeed next time round.

hoops997 · 24/11/2009 10:16

Thanks Ladies......I have been swotting up on some info but will get some books to swot up some more, I understand that if I can't do it, it doesn't make me a bad mother just one that can't bf.

dollshouse I think you are right about relatives self esteems, my sister has had 3 children and she didn't want to bf with any of them and my mother wasn't able to with her 3 children, so I do think they see me as trying to undermine them, I'm not at all just trying to give mini-hoops a good start in life, and if that is formula then that's what it will be......

I definately will be enlisting help from someone, even if I have to phone someone, the only person that is positive about bf is my little sister who has just given birth 6 weeks ago, who didn't want to bf, but has no objections to anyone else trying it......

Anyway thanks for your help, hope you are going ok
