HT - sorry bfing is so tough. Agree with the others, your latch can't be ok if you're having problems. IME with dd1, one bad latch could cause pain for the next few feeds regardless of how good those latches were. It maybe that the latch your MW saw was ok, but that others weren't. Def ring someone, or go to a feeding cafe or similar to get some support.

I can't praise lansinoh highly enough, before and after every feed while you're healing. Nipple sheilds can cause a supply problem, but if you've got plenty of milk, it may be worth a try just to get out of the pain loop.

Don't know if its co-incidence but my nipples stopped being sore when I switched from disposable breastpads to washables.

MW gave me a tip in hosp to hand express a little out of the nipple before feeding, it improves the shape of the nipple and seems to make the initial latch on less painful.

Good luck, if you can make it to the 6 week mark you will notice a vast improvement I'm sure. Don't let your boobs get in a mess tho, there are plenty of people out there who can help.

Hi All,

I had my baby girl on 19th October, Emma Grace weighed 5lb 15 1/2 ounces - very precise !! My waters broke on the Friday and following an examination I was found to be 3cm dilated despite feeling no contractions ... Tens machine got me to 6/7cm dilated and then I used gas and air and had a little go in the birthing pool which I hadnt planned for orignally. After 9hours Emma was born Sooooooo happy!!

We are trying to find our new sense of normality as a family, and the breastfeeding is successful so far with her feeding every 3hours.....However, she is as good as gold in the day and then from 7ish pm she screeeeaaaams the house down!! This has been apparent from day one. So, we plan for this time and reallt sretch the evening out with lots of stimulation followed by a bath and feed and bed which seems to be working...... the main problem is that she just will not sleep in her moses basket! The minute she falls asleep and we put her in, she is awake and frantically kicking and thrashing about until we pick her up! She always ends up in bed with us.....which i know a lot of people have conflicting thoughts about. We have been advised by midwife to start using a dummy to pacify her, which is fine as long as it doesnt interfere with the breastfeeding which i have tried so hard to establish. Im so sorry for the ramblings.... Anybody got any words of wisdom, or had the same sort of thing??? Its our first baby so its all abit daunting and hormones certainly are flying all over the place!

Thanks a million for your support and advice everyone. Am feeling a bit better. I got some Lansinoh last night and had been putting it on religiously. At 10.15am, Joseph was feeding on the right this morning and suddenly it didn't hurt anymore. Left one still tender but improving.

I've been lucky enough to see both a midwife and breastfeeding counsellor here at the house today.(and I called two helplines!) Thhey were here seperately for well over an hour each and saw me feed several times. Both say latch is fine and agree with me that the problem with the latch was probably Tuesday when Joseph was really grumpy and feeding constantly. The only thing that calmed him that day was being rocked while one of us was standing in front of the hairdryer, I was trying to feed him standing up and it was hell. Am reassured by their comments. Both said he seems to be going through a growth spurt this week with the near constant feeding.

The blisters are sucking blisters apparently and I'm to continue with the Lansinoh and feeding through them. Letting the air get to them should help so must rember to put a top back on before I answer the door. and I've had a stern talking to about not trying to do everything and how to ignore SIL/anyone who offers the advice of "my baby never did that."

Midwife was trying to put Joe in his moses basket-no chance. So we're going to try cot at night and the cradle swing for daytime naps

HT Well done you for getting though this {applauds} BF is the hardest thing I've ever done and sometime does seem like hell.
I'm suprised at how controversial nipple sheilds are - I used them when I had mastitis and didn't encounter any problems. The only other suggestion could be to express more feeds, I find expressing almost a pleasant experience, and would give your nipples a bit more of a break. Mine still ache and I find expressing the late evening feed gives them about a 6hr break which is really useful.
Of course, if you can't face it, don't feel bad about switching to FF or mixed feeds; Joseph will be fine either way, and you need to take care of yourself! XXXX

HT-so pleased you had a positive day.

Jelly-congratulations on the birth of Emma. Matthew wouldn't settle in his swinging crib so the MW suggested putting a top I had worn over the mattress then warm it with a hot water bottle and I found this made a vast improvement. Until I did this he yelled until I picked him up. He just witters to be picked up during the day now.

Calypso-everytime I log onto MN it looks different.

Bless you Hattie-you are most definitely not alone and invisible. Won't be long now.

I am STILL waiting too!!! Week over tomorrow. Had sweep yesterday and got date for Tuesday to be induced.

Really don't want to be induced- any positive experiences???

Hi Ronniemummy!

Do you have other children? if so when were they born?

This is no.3 for me, i don't have experience of induction, i narrowly missed it when dd1 was born at day 13 just before i was due for induction. dd2 came 2 days prior to due date.

Both my others came within a couple of days of having a sweep, so fingers crossed it'll work with you. Did the midwife indicate whether you had dilated at all?

calypso yep, mn is not right atm...

MW came today and weighed Freddie, he's lost 2oz. ds and dd didn't lose any birth weight. He is so chiilled out, he fell asleep during hia heel prick test

I'm thinking labour thoughts for all of you that want them.

HT - sounds like you are doing really well. Hard work though!

Jelly - DD sleeps better when near me so I make sure her moses basket is toasty warm by putting a hot water bottle in it to warm it up then take it out when she is ready to go in. I had a big chat with the Health Visitor about dummies for babies and she agreed with me that it would not be a problem with breast feeding. She said you have to be consistent with the timing you give the dummy. I gave DS a dummy when he was a few weeks old and bf until he was 7 months. DD not showing signs of needing one yet. She falls asleep all the time instead.
You could also try swaddling DD to stop her thrashing about. Stops them waking themselves up. Good luck.

Morning all. Im so glad the bf is improving ht.
Ds1 wouldnt bf at all, I had blood blisters and cuts all over my nipples, turns out he had a disalined jaw from the Ventous.

Ds2 bf brilliantly but also comfort sucked the whole time and I couldnt tell what was hunger and what was comfort so ended up giving him a dummy at night only and it didnt interfere with bf at all.

ds3 bf really well but if he doesnt open his mouth wide enough then it hurts like hell and we have to start again. I find that putting his crib mattress on the bed next to me means that he will sleep on it as its close to me, then I can just lift the whole thing into his crib, although at the moment I just leave him where he is.
princessmel you are soooo lucky, my Freddie feeds every 2 hours at night. However I feel lucky as he is very calm generally.

Conratulations if Ive missed any birth arrivals. For those still waiting not long now.

Ive updated the list as Fred was 9 days early not 6. I cant believe how many of us there are!

Have moved a few onto the babies born list even though we haven't heard anything yet, I'm assuming that they MUST have been born as the due dates were at the beginning of October

Morning!
My first day alone today (well nit really aone as a friend is coming over at 11) but no dh here.

Freddie seems to have his awake time when dh and I want to go to sleep! I.e 9/10pm ish for a good few hours. He'll feed and poo and feed and burp all this time. During the day he'll feed and go off to sleep wherever , whenever, stay in his pram and crib and be passed about. But during this time he just wants milk after milk!! I know it's normal, I just would prefer this time to be earlier.!!! dd did this from 6pm ish so it seemed easier.

Last night he fed on and off from 8pm till 12, (seemed so long for him to be awake, think he was on the verge of being overtired) then slept till 4, then went straight back after a short feed till 7 ish then straight back after another short feed ,and is still asleep now. He needs to move this sleep plan earlier!!!! I can't go back to sleep now though as have ds and dd and dh is working....

peaches good idea about the cot mattress, lifting and moving him in etc.

hc I did the 'top I wore that day over the matress' thing last night. It can only help settle them can't it? Good in my view. Dh thought I was mad...!

hello, Madison has started to feed every hour again so I can relate to all those with sore niples , mine are getting tender again, I had Madison weighed and she is now 11lb 3oz no wonder with the amount she guzzles , sending labour vibes to those who want them, have a good weekend everyone

FAO HAttie 05: Yes, I have a 3 year old daughter. This morning I have had a bit of a show and am getting some faint period like cramps on and off so I am hoping this is the start of something. I don't know if the sweep has worked or if persuading hubbie for some DIY induction has worked- either way it's a step forward!!! Although, with my DD I had a show on the mon and waters didn't break until Thursday. had her on Friday so hoping it's a bit quicker this time around.

Good luck with yours as well- it's a race to the finish line now!!!

Good luck all due very soon. Seems so long ago that I was birth symptom spotting, Matthew is 1 month old tomorrow. He woke every hour to an hour and a half last night.

No trick or treaters yet, didn't get any last year.

Positive thoughts to all of you still waiting, can't be long now.

Have had a couple of go's at expressing now and it seems to be going ok, don't seem to get that much out at one go but no worries as slowly building up a freezer supply.

Does anyone have any favourite freezer storage for the milk? So far I have used my spare Avent bottles (I saw somewhere that they are microwave and Freezer proof) didn't know if anyone has had any experience with the Avent Via storage cups that can be adapted to feed from. Also the storage bags? Don't know what would be best?

Has anyone got any experience with Birth marks too? Ella was born with a couple of pale red marks on her back and over the last 3 weeks (she is 3 weeks old!) they have got redder and redder. I don't think they are, what they call, Strawberry Birth Marks as they aren't raised, but they don't seem to fit the description of Stork Bites either. The midwife didn't seem to bothered about them but didn't seem familiar with them either and just said to keep my eye on them? If anyone has experienced anything similar let me know?

I always seem to be asking for advice on here, sorry I'm not giving much back, but everything is a learning curve for me being a newbie!

Hello everyone

Computer has been in for repair for 2 weeks so I haven't had a chance to post before now but am pleased to report that my baby finally arrived 11 days late on the 13th Oct. We have named him Benedict, he was 6lb 15oz at birth and arrived very suddenly by emergency cs. My husband only arrived at the hospital as they started the cs so it was all a bit fraught. Not what I had in mind at all. But all is well and that's all that matters. Can't believe that all happened nearly 3 weeks ago.

He is feeding and sleeping reasonably well but I am still pretty exhausted.

Congratulations cookiemonster fluffycats all my children have been born with birthmarks which sound very like what you are describing. Dd1 had one on her foot and a bigger one in the middle of her back, the one on her foot went by the time she was 6 mths, she still has the one on her back. Ds had one on his hand which went by 6mths. Dd2 has one on her eyelid, I think it will probably go soon too. I have noticed that they get a bit darker if they are hot or annoyed, but they do go eventually and are nothing to worry about.
