devils hope you feel better soon, there's nothing worse than being ill when you've got a small baby.

princessmel try not to worry about the lump, it's very common to have random lumps and bumps whilst bf, it's probably just a milk duct. No harm in getting it checked out though if you're really worried.

Thrush symptoms are for baby as littlepea says, white coating on the tongue or white spots. For mum some indicators are deep tissue pain in the breast AFTER the feed, and change in the colour of the nipples (ie. bright pink)

boob I'm also a fan of tommy tippee breast pads, although I don't seem to be using that many this time.

ruby my ds had terrible milk spots, he look like a spotty teenager for weeks, never found anything that got rid of them, they just went on their own eventually.

ht poor you, mastitis is horrible, remember to do lots of breast massage during feeds. Also it's a good idea to try different positioning, dangle feeding (the one where you're on all fours seems to work quite well)Also I have been running breastfeeding clinics for almost 4 years now and I have never heard anyone say that they have too express before a feed as not to pass on much of the AB's. The doctor should have perscribed bf friendly AB's so you should be able to feed as normal. IMO any expressing and discarding will not help the mastitis (in fact will probably make matters worse as it will make you more engorged)

newbee congratulations

jellytoz If you are bf she won't be constipated so won't need any water, check with your HV. And definately go to your post-natal group, mine was a life saver when I had dd1 and I'm still really good friends with the mums I met there.

Well, I think that's everything! Amelie is 7 weeks today

Morning all.

I like waving arms too.

It seems that Mastitis is catching!!!

ruby Im not sure about the poo thing, check with your hv.

For all of you who are worried about Toddler groups/mum and baby groups. I help to run one on a wednesday, its also on a tuesday but I dont always make it. So far we have been to conferences and day courses on how to welcome people and spot those who are nervous etc. I am creating a board that says welcome and am getting everyone to translate it into their language so I can add it to the board and everyone can understand and so they feel welcome!!!! We are in NW London so its a multi-cultural area. They are so worth it and help so many people. We do clothes swap and a dads only zone the first saturday of the month while the mums can do yoga upstairs if they like and its free! I recommend them highly!

Still feeding every 2 hours, still eating choc biscs.

twinklegreen Thanks for the info. I'm allergic to penecillin so am on erythromycin. Gave up expressing beforehand as it just wasn't practical. He screamed blue murder to feed last night(is this the 6 week growth spurt my hv keeps on about?)so I put him first on the non-infected breast which was painful aftr a bit. It had become quite soft over the course of the day and I had trouble latching on. It felt really empty. I know its not as when I hand express,/massage, milk comes squirting out. So put Joe on mastitis breast and he sucked away on and off until 3am.

Woke up this morning, tried him on non infected breast again.More pain, more trouble latching on which has resulted in another bloody nipple blister. So they both hurt now. I am so annoyed-feel a complete failure at bf and like I need to relearn everything. How are you supposed to feed with soft breasts? So I have a bf counsellor coming to the house today at 11.30am, will see what she says. I'm determined to persevere with this but its so hard. I'm not usually v good at asking for help butI know when I'm beaten

Btw, has anyone else's baby attempted to climb out of the sling yet(by grabbing my t-shirt with both hands and trying to haul himself up) or is it just mine?

hi ht I had same antibiotics for my uterine infection and did not express and milk before - noone told me to and anyway I have a lot of trouble expressing.

Sorry for long post but hoping for some advice:

Having seen the symptoms for thrush i am now worried we have that now. I had it after the antibiotics in my lower region (iykwim)and treated that with something doc gave me for it while I was pregnant - thankfully that's better now but never thought about getting it in the breasts too. I have been getting the burning pain after feeding in the nipples and deep in the breast. Now thinking I should go have it checked out. HV is away this week and haven't seen her since last Tuesday.

I have had a strange few days with breastfeeding which is my own fault really but am hoping it will sort itself soon. I have been waiting for the breastfeeding councillor to get in touch after the HV spoke to her (at least I hope she did).

You see we ( well really dh) decided to help me and my nipples by giving a bottle feed at night to let me rest and my bleeding nipples rest (particularly left one) when lo was not very old. Luckily it seemed to cause no real nipple confusion and the nipple shields I got also helped the healing. Now they are nearly fully healed I don't use the shields and feeding is easier. However the last few nights dh has stopped giving the feed and given me the bottle to feed him with saying he is too tired as he has to get up for work (understandable but as point was to give me a rest as I am up all througth the night and this is the 10-11pm feed). Anyway I think this has confused him as he is not used to a bottle from me and so he has stopped opening his mouth wide enough for him to bf feed properly. Last night I refused to give him a bottle and just bf him even though I didn't have much milk there as he always cluster feeds through the evening anyway and the bottle was always just a top up feed. He just fed for ages but seemed happy enough and eventually went down for 3 hours so a success. I think that if I just bf him (tough for dh when he wants to feed him at a weekend) I will produce enough milk to feed him no matter how much he wants even if it takes a few days for it to come in.

Today we have had a better day with the latch and I am determined not to let this setback put us off bfing - but it is very hard work at the moment and we have had a very unsettled morning with lots of feeding.

I put him down to sleep and 1.15 and I can hear him grizzling as he wakes up already and all I have done is make a drink and write this - must grab something to eat for lunch before I retrieve him for his next feed. Sorry for the long me post.

saraheb That all sounds a little stressfull.I would continue with the breast feeding and your suply will increase fairly quickly. You sound like you have been through alot but everything should settle down soon.Once the breast feeding is well established it will be easy peasy.Make sure that you eat, rest and drink alot especially before the 10 o'clock feed.I am sure others will give you some good advice.

fidelma · 18/11/2009 21:24
