Ohh - good reminder Arcadie - I was going to join the group once I'd had my scan...which I have now had. Will join now - my initials are LS

annamama · 17/09/2009 11:54

Ok, this is nothing compared to what Iwonka was going through... but I'm still in a little bit of a panic! I just got my letter with the complete test results and blood tests have given the risk 1:150 for Downs. Nuchal scan risk is 1:1374. The combined risk 1:825. Am I being unreasonable to worry? I am 36 years old. Nuchal was 1.2 mm so well under 3 mm. But why is the blood risk higher? Iwonka, did you get any explanation as to why yours was so high? I think you can have more bloods taken later on, at 16 weeks or something. Might go private just to get some reassurance. I will search on mumsnet for more info about all this, but if anyone wants to comment please do!

Hey ladies, Thankyou for the warm welcome just heard dc2 heartbeat and feeling all awwwww so happy morning for me. Ah morning sickness is improving, just the general ooo am gonna throw up feeling every now and then. Pulling pains though are a total nightmare! The other night i terrified my poor dp i must have turned over felt an almighty tearing pain and screamed out OUCH!!! Waking my dp with the scream (me still half asleep) dp throwing clothes on and mobile at the ready to call 999 bless him.

Hope all you girls are doing well and having fun with the daily changes of pregnancy

PacificDogwood · 17/09/2009 12:24

anna, the combined risk is the only thing that matters, so 1:825 is not bad at all . Your baby has 1 chance out of 825 to be affected, which is the same as saying it has a 824 chance out of 825 chance to not be affected. Another way of saying it, is if you had 825 children statistically 1 of those children would be affected. Now I do not know about your family plannning, but really your chances of a healthy baby are high. The only thing all the statistics in the world cannot tell you is whether your 1st or your 5th or your 825th child are to be the affected one...
My last DS risk was 1:16 (I am v ancient hag ) and I did have diagnostic tests done (not so much to rule out Down's, long story, won't bore you) although of course chances for this baby to be affected were only 1:16 for, or 15:16 against.
Try not to get too bogged down by these results, yours is a good one. Bizarrely, it always helped me to think there are so many Other Things that can go wrong that cannot be tested for, so it seemed a bit pointless to expend too much nervous energy on one thing, namely DS. .

mumbot · 17/09/2009 12:42

Hi anna - my sonographer said the nuchal scan is far more accurate than the bloods x

Thanks for Facebook invite Arcadie, I prefer to use mumsnet for this sort of thing, just works better for me

annamama · 17/09/2009 12:51

Thanks Pacific and Mumbot, you made me feel better! 1:16, you must have been pretty nervous... I know I'm probably being paranoid. And no I wasn't planning on 825 kids, I might just stop at 824 and hope that it's the last one that would have DS... Anyway, I might phone Barts to have a "quadruple" blood test at 15-16 weeks, it's £80. Just for extra reassurance.

On a positive note, I've just been on the crosstrainer, am knackered but feeling quite good. Gotta keep fit for the birth... innit! ;) Anyone doing any exercise and if so what?

Hi everyone. Not posted for ages as had nothing much to say. I've just spent the last 10 mins or so catching up on all the goings on.
Had my 12 week scan and obstetric review this week. Scan was all fine (it's such a relief to know it is more than just cake in there. I have a recurrent daydream that a whole cupcake, complete with candle will come into view on the scan). Midwife was lovely but I'd forgotten how much I disliked the local obstetricians. I work as a doctor in the hospital I'm booked in to but still got to see the highly disinterested registrar (it is considered common courtesy that you see the consultant if you are medical or work in the hospital) who dashed in, informed me I would be having an elective section and a glucose tolerance test without any kind of discussion then ran out the door again. Then to add insult to injury, all my details including blood pressure and urine results along with my name were in big letters on the door of the room! What happened to patient confidentiality? I do understand that they are extremely busy clinics so they have to be quick, but if DH and I weren't medics, we would not really have had any clue what was going on. As you can tell, I'm still cross about it now.
Anyway, rant over now. Told DSs about the baby after the scan. DS2 couldn't be less interested but DS1 is fascinated and asking lots of questions (fortunately not about how the baby got there in the first place) and trying to think up names. Unfortunately he can only come up with the names of babies he already knows. I'd be very interested to know if anyone has found a good book about babies as the one we have is a little advanced for him (3.5). There used to be some really good "how my body works" books around but I can't find one at the moment.
Anyway, hope everyone is doing well and growing nicely (but not too fast).

swingsofglory · 17/09/2009 14:08

Hi all,

I had my scan the other week and they did the blood test, but as they post the results to you I haven't even had them yet. The scan was absolutely fine though and I think they phone if you are high risk, so I'm not too worried. All the same - it'd be nice to know. We did get some post today (first time for 3 days) but sadly not the test results. The wait goes on...

Annamamma - I'm doing exercise. I've been going to my usual weekly exercise class all the way through - the class teacher's pregnant too, so we're slowing down gently together. I've been to a a yoga class this week too - I've done it on and off for years so I went to a general class but although the teacher knew I was pregnant she didn't make it easy for me. I was doing shoulder stands and lying there with my legs over my head half the time - think I might try and find something a bit more gentle! Although I did feel good afterwards.

hecklephone · 17/09/2009 14:27

Annamama, I'm feeling very virtuous at the moment cos I was swimming yesterday AND went for a walk today. Am trying to make the most of 2nd trimester energy and do lots of exercise while I still can. My last labour was looooong and flippin' hard work so the more I can do now the easier it could make this labour I reckon...well here's hoping anyway.

Feeling quite that some of you get 16 wk scans and a chance to hear the heartbeat- I feel a bit in limbo at the mo cos there's no sickness but also no movement yet either, just a large-ish belly which could just be made of cake quite frankly.

Sorry to hear about your DDs accidents Sarah and pixie- really hope they feel better soon.

sarahmikeharryandrosie · 17/09/2009 16:14

hey everyone, DD is fine today no more probs!!!Lol

i am totally shattered though think yesterdays events have caught up with me!!!!!Really could no without going to work this eve!!!!

Hi fleximum I'm sure as an insider you could have a confidential word with the powers that be about your disinterested registrar - I think this experience will only make you a better doctor, but you already sound like the kind of doctor anyone would be lucky to have x

Well done to all you exercise bunnies, I'm doing a little bit but get out of breath very easily!

scooby26 · 17/09/2009 21:09

Annamama - well done you. I only managed a swim this week - I fugure every little helps!

Fleximum- congrats on your scan - it's great to see isn't it!

Hecklephone - it isn't a 16 week scan in Newcastle but I'm told and hoping that the Midwife listens for the heartbeat on a dopler thingy. Next scan 20 weeks.

Pixie - sorry to hear about your DD - sounds sore. Good luck for her speedy recovery.

To all - Mamas and Papas have a 50% sale on maternity clothes!!!!

Dophus · 18/09/2009 07:55

Oh dear back to school:

DS1 has a hacking cough
DS2 has a runny nose (which will not stop dripping until May)

... and I'm coming down with something.

Shit week at work - they've announced 13% redundancies but 'we haven't decided how we're going to do this'. Groan - I went throuhg this whilst pregnant with DS1

Ont he positive note we have soemone coming to view our house for a second time today. We have found somewhere we like so desperate to be moved by the time the baby arrives.

I'm exercising a little: cross trainer, swimming and weights. Tomorrow I have booked the boys into the creche to so my Step class ... we'll see.

MrsJamin · 18/09/2009 09:48

Not dropped in for a while (I'm SleepWhenImDead as well). Things are going well here - had a nice scan, felt the little one move from 11+5wks. Thought you guys might want to know about mamas and papas maternity sale, some nice things to see us through a whole winter in maternity wear! link

Hurrah - just bought a Jane Powertwin double pushchair on ebay for £150! With a car seat, would cost over £500 new... Looks in great condition. Red & green. Might have to take DD and a doll out in it when we get it!

That's so cool that you felt the baby move MrsJamin!

Dophus - Well done with the exercising! And hope you sell your house! We're trying to sell ours too, been arguing about negotiating the price for many months with this stupid stubborn couple! We can't sell for less than our mortgage, is that so hard to understand?! Especially now that the market is finally rising a little.

50% at mamas & papas is good, that's what I call a proper sale. I don't think I'm buying anything though, still got lots from last time.

IWCAS - hi, how's things with you and how has your ex been about everything?

My DH has grown a goatee beard since we were in Rhodes... and I don't like it! I've told him if he wants sex he can put a paper bag over his head.
