I have started the new thread

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
HalfMumHalfBiscuit · 15/06/2009 20:26

Eeek! just had to answer the door in pjs to bloke who wanted to buy honey . Checked myself out in the mirror after he went and I look like a massive pregnant woman in comfy clothes and slippers .

HalfMumHalfBiscuit · 15/06/2009 20:27

I should mention that I put on pjs as an incentive to DS to get ready for bed and that its a lot more comfortable than my work gear.

fidelma · 15/06/2009 20:59

Thanks for all you kind words.I have my sad times when I think about her and her DH and 4 children and then I say a little prayer and allow myself not to be consumed.Although I do have a good cry sometimes.

On a happy note my 9 ex battery hens got out into the run today and it was a joy to see them enjoying the sun and pecking around. They also left me 9 eggs.Although the yolk looks nothing like my other hens but they will get there. (pale not orange)

Changing table debate.I do like to have something high to change the baby on.It does save your back.I have always used a chest of draws or a mat on top of the washing machine for downstairs.(also the floor)

HC check out the headache but don't worry.Your BP sounds pretty normal.

MeHimCatBlob · 15/06/2009 21:06

Fidelma - echo what everyone else says - am so sad at your news.

reading all the thoughts about changing tables, changing mats, prams etc makes me realise exactly how unprepared for all this I am. we havent brought anything, havent even looked for anything mainly because we are trying to move house before the little one arrives and hence dont want to buy loads of stuff and then have to hide it when people come round. Havent got a clue where to start!! Also still erring on the side of not wanting to tempt fate by planning for the baby in case anything goes wrong. Still have my wedding in less than 2 weeks and we are expecting to exchange on DP's house this week so have plenty to think about in the meantime!

Didnt realise there was so much to organise having a baby - must make a list of "things you should know before getting pregnant"! although am sure if I read up, its probably all there in black and white

KleineMaus · 15/06/2009 21:50

I've just read that the baby of the first person to die of swine flu in this country has also died. How sad is that? He was born 11 weeks premature and didn't die of swine flu though. Even still I'm getting paranoid about the fact that I"m supposed to be meeting a friend tomorrow who works in a hospital where they've just started having confirmed cases of swine flu. I guess I should maybe try and find out if she's actually been in direct contact with anyone who has it. Please tell me I'm being ridiculous and paranoid...

Fidelma, how heart-breaking, it doesn't bear thinking about.

hackneybird · 15/06/2009 22:16

Mehim, don't worry, you aren't the only one who isn't very prepared yet! It still seems too early to me.

I keep reading on other threads here that you don't actually need that much for a newborn and you can buy plenty once lo has arrived. I am going to get the minimum, then buy stuff as I hink we need it (although I got given a sling by a friend which I am thrilled with). I think others here are much more prepared as they already have children. So lets relax!

princessmel · 16/06/2009 07:58

hakneybird LOLOLOL!!! I just googled mimimum.
I read it in your post as 'mini-mum' and thought it was some new basic baby essentials kit I din't know about!!

Hehe!! you're right though, as long as you have a car seat(if you're driving home in car) nappies, cotton wool and a few clothes you'll be fine. You can buy other stuff as you go along.

OP posts:
sammysam · 16/06/2009 08:08

Morning! Looks like it's going to be a lovely day!

DD wasn't great over night but as far as I know there aren't any spots yet but she still has a very sore throat, temp down though.

Littlemiss-forgot to comment on your house and now it has fallen through Try not to worry-it'll just mean you find a better one

Just a little thought re buying stuff after baby is here-I do agree (we did with a lot of smaller things) but also you need to remember that your LO will be here iykwim!? So you'll have little time to research what you want and trecking out to purchase said item might not be easy plus if you go with baby as well factor in that you'll have all the baby stuff with you in the car so if it is a big thing it might be tricky! But there is online of course!

I'm only going to treat baby myself to a couple of new things-I think a nice changing bag, new wrap, sheepskin, cot top changing mat and a couple of new nappy wraps.....I think that might be it-would love to buy more but it is just silly seeing as we have everything already

HC i hope your head is better today x

Better get ready-my dad rang last night to ask if he could come and see us today-so I now have a mad rush to get his fathers day stuff sorted in the next couple of hours

HumphreysCorner · 16/06/2009 08:52

Well, still have a headache so phoned the Dr and they said to phone the MW but her phone is switched off. Will keep trying. DD1 has lost her school cardigan and is on a school trip today, thought we would find it this morning but it isn't there so she just has a coat. It has really wound me up as she is just not interested in finding it that is why she will have to manage with just her coat but why do I feel bad about not sending her jumper?

Have a good day ladies, got my phone on redial.

25 weeks!

princessmel · 16/06/2009 10:07

Oh HC that would annoy me too. But it's going to be lovely and sunny so she'll probably not need it atall!

I don't think we'll be buying anything really for baby. I'd love to buy some new things but we just have everything already. Vests, babygros, grobags, blankets, cots, pram, carseat, bath, change mats etc etc.

Poor baby!

Maybe a new outfit for coming out of the hospital.

OP posts:
Treats · 16/06/2009 16:39

Hi everyone.

Actually I agree with all those who've said that you shouldn't buy too much before the baby is here - I think you could easily end up with a whole mound of stuff that you never use, which is just a waste of money and space (hence opposition to the changing table......) But I am enjoying thinking about it and being able to do something to plan for the LO's arrival. And lord knows there'll be enough to think about once they're actually here!

HC - v. poor that you can't get hold of anyone. Bit that the GP told you to ring the MW - how does s/he know that your headache is pregnancy related? Are MWs medically qualified to deal with every symptom, as long as it's being felt by a pregnant woman? Hope you get through soon.

Very sad about the mother and baby that died of swine flu. It suddenly made me realise how vulnerable we pregnant women are. I know that some people here have already had to face the slapped cheek scares, but it didn't really hit home with me before. The poor woman had three other children......

smallone · 16/06/2009 18:05

Hi all,

Don't worry about not being prepared, I wasn't buying anything yet with DD, but I was looking! Helps you get your head around it I think.

HC you could ring labour ward and tell them that you can't get hold of your midwife, I'm sure they'd be happy to help over the phone. Or maybe give you a number of another community midwife you could try for advice. Hope you're feeling better.

rubyslippers · 16/06/2009 19:07

hi all

hope you are feeling ok HC and managed to speak to someone

will catch up more later

hope you are all well

xx

HalfMumHalfBiscuit · 16/06/2009 19:36

Hi, hope everyone is feeling ok and HC has got through to someone about her headache.

I did have a slight worry when I heard about the lady dying of swine flu but she did have underlying health issues and I read somewhere that she had a stroke so that could have been an entirely separate issue. However, it is still summer and the flu is likely to spread more in winter. This is more of a worry for us as that is when we will be due and have the little ones! However, there is not much we can do now or then but see how things pan out.

HalfMumHalfBiscuit · 16/06/2009 19:37

Oops too many howevers.

Also should say it is tragic that she died and the baby too.

HumphreysCorner · 16/06/2009 21:33

Very sad news that wasn't it?

MW switched her phone on an hour ago but she hasn't phoned so will have to try her tomorrow. Head still banging.

fidelma · 16/06/2009 21:45

HC I think the Dr should of seen you.I hope you got hold of someone and are feeling better.

I was also sad about the swine flu case.It is worrying. she had already had a stroke .I guess we need to stay well and relax as much as we can.It is a mild flu in most cases.

I have to confess I have a new moses basket filled with things for the baby.I have put a sheepskin(use last time and very good) in the bottom on top of the matteress for the baby to sleep on.It looks so cosy.I have bought 4 packs of baby grows from mothercare(The ones with foldover scratch mittens very useful and saves using gloves which always fall off)Also some new vests. This should make you smile my SIL is a great knitter and is knitting me a few cashmear cardies but she did one for DD1s teddy(lamds wool) it has never been used so that is also in the basket!!!I also have my good old blankets and motherease nappies and wraps at the ready(although I will use disposables until I am well and truly back on my feet)

24 weeks today do you think the next 16 will pass quickly?

idreamofbeanie · 16/06/2009 22:45

I hadn't bought too much until today but have just won a pram on e-bay. It is the exact one I wanted (except black instead of red) and half the price it is in the shop. I was quite nervous - I've never spent that much on e-bay before - but it looks in great condition and is from a business seller/shop so should be okay. With the money I've saved I'm going to buy a storage unit/drawers for the baby's stuff and a play mat. We don't need much else - my DB and SIL passed on bags of clothes, moses basket, bedding, changing mats and a bath seat and some friends gave us a bouncy chair. I think we just need a cot and a car seat now.

HC - hope that you managed to get hold of someone. I'd be very no-one helped you.

I'm not worried about swine flu yet but I hope it doesn't get worse in autumn/winter when we have our LOs. That ladies case was so sad though.

smallone · 17/06/2009 09:41

Morning all,
Tragic about the mum who died of swine flu, but it sounds like a very extreme case, sounds like she was still effected by the previous stroke and had been admitted for pneumonia, so was really immunosuppressed. I guess antibac wipes is one more thing to be packing in the hospital bag!

Hope you're feeling better HC.. and that sammysams dd isn't too spotty!

Have a good day!

littlepea72 · 17/06/2009 11:14

Hi

Im back to feeling really sick & god im sooo tired. Dont know if its because i packed up the living room 2 days ago, but i cant do anything now. This comes & goes, and im sure my DH is thinking im just being lazy. How im i going to pack up the rest by the weekend! We have to give myself a great big shake & a few slaps i think!

HC...continue to phone until they get fed up and bloody answer! To long for headaches. I hope you are ok, nothing worse than having children to look after with a headache.....but to have people from a medical background not responding to a pregnant woman makes me mad!

Lovely couple a few doors down called in with me last night. They brought me down 2 big bin bags off baby girls clothes. They are still sitting there & i cant bring myself to look at them....i think i need to get my ass into gear...im trying not to think about it yet! Can i just say, i mean the bags off clothes are still sitting there....not the couple!!!

Agree about that poor woman & now her baby. At least they will be together A very sad time for the family.

HumphreysCorner · 17/06/2009 16:59

Hi all

MW still not phoned so asked to see a Dr who checked me over and thinks I have a bug/virus of unknown origin. He has given me codeine and paracetamol so hope this kicks in soon to ease my horrendous migraine.

Love to all!
