Hattie05 They will take bloods which should include iron levels, but if they dont do this at your hosp for any reason just ask them to check it while they are taking so much blood may as well take a little more. They dont check the heartbeat where I am until you are much further along, think it is so they dont worry you if they cant find it early on.

Hattie05 · 25/03/2009 06:31

Its an appt of any sorts i'm waiting for. There is a shortage of midwives in my area so I havn't had a booking in appt yet at all. This is why i am going to ask my GP to check my iron, but was just wondering if this should have already happened should i have seen a midwife by now.

Hi Kaos73 and welcome! Our posts must have crossed last time.

patmum · 25/03/2009 07:41

Hattie05 - how far along are you? I just looked on the list but couldn't spot you?

I just had my booking appt at nearly 12 weeks but the time sensitive thing is the screening tests (if you are someone who wants them) I think that nuchal fold scan needs to take place by about 13 weeks if that is what you want to go for.

Many midwife teams seem to be pretty independent of the GP surgeries, but the community midwives seem to be in pretty close contact with the hospital ones. So it might be worth contacting your hospital directly (speak to the ante-natal clinic or a labour ward if you need to, just to make contact) at least then they should be able to tell you definitively whether something should have happened by now and talk you through any major concerns and get the ball rolling with scan dates.

sammysam · 25/03/2009 07:58

Wow-loads of posts!
Congratulations to all the lovely scans!
Hello and welcome to all the new posters/lurkers

Hattie-I didn't have any bloods taken til just after my 12wk scan-so I dodn't think you would have if you'd seen the MW. Friend of mine was very tired and turned out she was anemic-almsot as soon as she started the iron she felt better! I'm assuming they check your levels in the 12wk bloods and would let you know if there was a problem-so I must be ok-just tired anyway!!! Also midwives don't generally listen to the heartbeat til around 16wks as it can be hard to find and then can cause undue worry etc.

Littlepea-that is such fantastic news-how lovely! So you'll be near all your family and friends How soon are you moving?

Keeping my fingers crossed as i'm still feeling much less sick.....

twinklegreen · 25/03/2009 08:09

Hi kkkaty, I'm in Strensall. Yes I will be having this on at York hospital, is this your first?

twinklegreen · 25/03/2009 08:13

And idreamofbeanie too! Is it your first? Just asking as I run some (NHS/ABM) ante natal classes and I'll make sure you get booked on when the time comes!

Cazza28 · 25/03/2009 08:20

HC good news on the scan - I am getting really excited for mine now, as it all seems to be good news! 2 days to wait! yeah!

Morning All!

Can't wait to tell people I am not just getting porky!

HappyTangerine · 25/03/2009 08:22

Hattie - I had my booking in appointment at 10 weeks but didn't get my bloods taken until yesterday at 13 weeks. This was because no-one could seem to find a vein- mw I saw yesterday couldn't either. In the end I had to see a phlebotomist yesterday morning who did it in a flash.

Any scans today?

Has anyone had any weird cravings yet? Apart from chicken drumsticks, I have a v strong urge to eat yoghurt, something I actively despise normally! I was practically vegan before I became pg and now this - Weird...

have a good day everyone x

LittleMissBliss · 25/03/2009 08:23

Morning,

Well done with all the great scans yesterday!
Good luck for those that have their scans today!

Hattie The midwife did listen to the babies heartbeat at 11+3 at my booking in appointment. I think it does depend o the area and midwife. Some are happy to do it early and some prefer to wait as sammysam said so that they don't cause undue worry if they can't find it.

My bloods are being taken at the hospital after my scan i way severly aneamic in my last pregnancy but the m/w didn't seem too worried when i mentioned this at 6 weeks and said just to wait untill 12 weeks when they take the routine bloods.

Doggus One more sleep untill scans!

Is anyone getting a really itchy tummy? I know its the skin stretching and i'm moisturising but it's still really itchy? Any great creams anyone could reconmend pretty please?!

Have a lovely day all, looks like the suns out again!

LittleMissBliss · 25/03/2009 08:28

Happy i'm a veggie and last pregnancy i had huge cravings for fish, but didn't eat any, also everyone was trying to shove steak down my face because i was so aneamic. This time meat does smell really tasty. But Just couldn't face eating it! Very odd.

LittleMissBliss · 25/03/2009 08:31

Must remember to punctuate!

sammysam · 25/03/2009 08:44

Littlemiss-re itchy skin-try something nice and natural like an oil mixture (just make it yourself from any nice ones you can get your hands on) or I got some really nice organic virgin cocoa butter and coconut butter which is lovely!

I've led a mainly veggie diet my whole life (mum never managed to get me to eat meat as a baby/child) but since my last pg and huge meat cravings I occasionally eat fish and some meat. This time i'm getting cravings for meat as well and am a strong believer in listening to what my body says-there must be something it needs. I had some of the most fantastic sushi from M&S yesterday-god it was so good! I just wish it wasn't £5.50 a pop-I really want more now just thinking about it
Plus my very very early craving this time was for biltong-was so close to ordering some online as there isn't (that I know of) a local african specialist shop around-had to try and make do with beef jerky-but it didn't hit the craving.

Can I ask how you have worded tell people you are pg? I have real trouble with this-I really don't know why-I don't want to say 'i'm pg' iyswim? Seeing my dad at the weekend and not quite sure what to say

KKKKaty · 25/03/2009 09:08

Twinklegreen - Yes, this is my first. However, I've already booked us on an NCT course starting in June. I thought it would be a good idea since we've only lived here for 18 months or so and don't know that many people yet - I've heard NCT is a good way to meet people. But thank you for your kind offer anyway!

KKKKaty · 25/03/2009 09:08

Oh, and LittleMissBliss and Doggus - I have my scan tomorrow too - getting a little bit nervous now...

smallone · 25/03/2009 09:10

Hi everyone, scan yesterday was cancelled so got to wait til next tues.

littlepea72 · 25/03/2009 09:18

Sammysam i remember wondering what to do about telling people when i was pregnant with DS, so i just phoned and said "your going to be grandparents" etc....it was so much easier! I didnt want to say i was pregnant because i didnt want my dad knowing i was having sex lol..., so just saying he was going to be a grandfather was so much easier lol...because i had my scan yesterday & everything was ok, i posted on my facebook that i had my first scan,so now my friends know. Hope i havent jumped the gun with it!

Could be moving home anywhere between the next 2 weeks & the next 4 months, just as long as its before Sept for school starting. DS is in pre-school here, but back home they are a year ahead, so in Sept he will be going into P2, missing out the first year!

Im really craving fish & chips! Germany dont have battered fish & chunky chips....ohhhhhh im going to live at the chip shop! Oh and cheddar cheese too!

CalypsoFlame · 25/03/2009 09:20

Brilliant news about all the scans so far this weeks, well done everyone!

Hello and welcome to all the newbies, {waves} and good luck to all the upcoming scans {crosses fingers}

Have been hit by the biggest wave of tiredness in the last week or so (13 weeks today), worse than 1st trimester {yawns again}.

Given up with the doppler, sounds like a rubbish radio set {crackle crackle WHINE crackle}. Very unsatisfying.

Tracyea at parping in shrubbery, struggling to get the energy this week to run before work - have you bought maternity running kit? I'd love some overbump capri running pants but most 'maternity exercise' workout wear seems to be for yoga!

CalypsoFlame · 25/03/2009 09:45

(and I uploaded my first 'bump' photo:

www.mumsnet.com/Profile?nick=CalypsoFlame&photos=p

I'm completely boggled that no-one has yet guessed I'm pg, I used to be like a stick! Maybe they're all too polite )

MrsPuddleduck · 25/03/2009 10:22

Hi all

HC - how many weeks did you think you were? I know you were quite precise.

HalfMumHalfBiscuit - do you want an elective c-scetion this time or to try vbac? I had an emergency c-scetion first time and a planned one secont time. I am going to have a third planned one this time. The planned c-scetion second time around was more nerve wracking, but much easier. First time I had drips, a catheter, a drain, intrevenous pain killers the lot for about two days. Plus when I did get out of bed I remembered I'd had an episiotomy as well,.... Second time I think the catheter was out as soon as I could get up and walk and I don't think I had a drip or anything. Still not the easy option becuase of the recovery time but there was nothing to it really.

Hi to everyone else!

MrsPuddleduck · 25/03/2009 10:22

Calypso - forgot to say. Your friends must be really polite

Sugarkane · 25/03/2009 11:08

Ok I will apologise before I post as its going to be a bit me me me. So after about 2 hours sleep last night as DD was being a pain in the bum I got up early and went along with a full bladder for my scan. Im sitting there for 30 mins when im told I need to go to the other part of the hospital to get a form, when I get there im told that I do not have an appointment today even though my letter says I do. So 1 hour later im still sitting there (full bladder) expecting a scan as they said they would fit me in. They then decided that I did have a scan this morning but it was at the hospital 1 hour away from where I live, now this wouldnt be so bad but the letter didnt tell me it was at that hospital. Then they say that they cant fit me in for a scan after all as they are busy and I have to go back tomorrow. God im so mad so all that worry I have had is now going to go on till tomorrow.

idreamofbeanie · 25/03/2009 12:08

SugarKane - that is awful . Don't they realise how excited/nervous we are waiting for our scans? I hope it all goes smoothly tomorrow.

Smallone - why was your scan postponed? It is rubbish they are making you wait until next week !

KKKKaty and Twinklegreen - this is my first baby and I'm not sure were I am going to give birth yet. I am considering one of the birth centres, prob Jubilee, although they are a bit further away. I don't know much about them though - I'm new to York so I haven't heard much about the hospital or maternity units. I have also booked onto an NCT course but I think it starts in July so prob not the same one as you KKKKaty. Like you I'm new to York and heard that the courses are a good way to meet people.

Good luck to everyone with scans tomorrow !

Flamesparrow · 25/03/2009 12:44

Oh that sucks sugarkane

I am completely exhausted today. Bought new bras this morning and have spent since 10am sat in a crumpled heap doing nothing. Got to collect dude from nursery in a min and am hoping he sleeps the whole afternoon so I can sleep too.

Taking a bump photo tonight.

Sammysam - DS is telling people for me, it makes my life much easier. I feel all self conscious if I say (like people are going to look at me and say "and...?"), but dude bouncing about mummy's baby in her tummy is much better.

Oh whoever was sick in the bush - it was a close call with me and school playground yesterday
