Hi Everyone!

Took a weekend off from the computer and now have so much to catch up on.

Sarah I don't know where to start - I'm so sorry you're going through all this but you really need to cut yourself some slack!!! You are pregnant and even without the depression that means you must think about yourself first. Don't worry about the dog thing - partly they were rediculous to rush you out of there with a dog so quickly! I have suffered depression in the past but have been ok for the past few years but I have noticed that since getting pg the downs are significantly lower than before - so I can only imagine that its even worse for you. I also think you've got to make sure you don't underestimate the knock on effect the events of the past year can have - especially the move. I moved to the UK from Canada and was there for 7 years until we moved to Canada 18 months ago. I can't even put into words how incredibly hard its been, depite having good friends nearby. To go from London to a subburb is incredibly difficult. Can you use the baby as an excuse to join ante-natal groups, etc? I'm finding contact with other people who are pg or have kids very helpful. I don't know what you're going through per se but I fully understand the impact of the moving and everything else and I'm so glad you've found us! (Sorry that was a bit long!)

I have a confession to make - we bought our pram at 10 weeks (talk about tempting fate!) but as I work for a baby mag I had done tons of research and I knew exactly what I wanted and it was 300 off after christmas (not sure we could have afforded it otherwise) so we jumped! We're picking up a few bits and bobs if we see them cheap but waiting for the ultrasound on march 25!

Hope everyone is feeling better and we have a good week! xoxo

trixymalixy · 23/02/2009 17:44

What pram did you get babybump?

ScummyMummy · 23/02/2009 17:46

Which pram was that then, BB2B? You sound like an expert and I must pick your brains!

ScummyMummy · 23/02/2009 17:47

Snap, trixy!

BabyBump2B · 23/02/2009 18:18

Hahaha Well first I'll tell you what was important to us in a pram:

We wanted:

  • something that could be used with a carseat
  • was reversible (was DH's most important feature as he worked on a documentary about how when children were spoken too as babies or could see their mothers lips move as they talked they were far less likely to have some developmental or learning disabilities and he found the stats compelling)
  • The baby could lie down as well as sit up
  • Good storage space under stroller
  • Easily collapsable

So we ended up with the Peg Perego Skate en.pegperegoskate.com/ which I believe is available at Mamas and Papas: www.mamasandpapas.co.uk/search/?query=skate&category=All Now its not cheap but we had already decided that if we were going to splurge on one item it was the stroller. I'll do a fair amount of walking so I love the suspension, how easy it is to manouver and how incredibly easy it is to collapse (you pull up on the lock and then there's a foot pedal!). It also has quite a long telescopic handle (which is good if you're tall) it easily moves from bassinet, to reclined seat to upright, and has good storage underneath.

We found that moms that compared it to bugaboo's, Quinny, etc much preferred it for the price!

Right now I spend A LOT of time researching products for work so am ALWAYS up for chatting about baby gear!!! LOL

BabyBump2B · 23/02/2009 18:22

Oh I should also say that its slightly more expensive in the UK than it used to be - it was about 399 so I was shocked when I just noticed it was now 575! In Canada its usually around $899 but it does come with the rain cover and car seat attachment that we were shocked that most stroller companies make you buy separately!

VJay · 23/02/2009 18:45

I lent all my baby stuff out to family and friends after ds was born (6.5 years ago), so thought we would have to buy a lot, but the really nice thing is that said family and friends have lent me a lot of their stuff back again, which is nice. It does go to show that what goes around comes around. We are going to buy a nice new pram though, and the one you got babybump soumds lovely.

trixymalixy · 23/02/2009 21:42

That looks fab BB2B!!!

I've got a Micralite Toro, which I'm very happy with. It would be perfect if it rear faced as well though.

Vjay, I lent out all our stuff as well so I'm hoping I'll get it back!! I got loads more maternity clothes back than I lent out, so hopefully the same will be true with the other baby stuff as well!!

sarah76 · 24/02/2009 08:19

With my first pregnancy, I researched everything like crazy, dragged DH to mothercare to look at carseats/prams/travel systems, and bought a amby nature's nest baby hammock on ebay. Then I miscarried at 7+1. I'd bought the hammock from someone in the U.S. and had it shipped to my mom's, thinking I would pick it up and bring it back when we went over in January.

This time I've been much more cautious. I'm 14 weeks today and still can't bring myself to think about anything for baby. This is probably more due to the depression than anything. When we were in the U.S. in January for our honeymoon and party with friends/family, I finally saw the hammockit was too big for us to manage with all our luggage! My dad is going to ship it over for us (mom is stuffing loads of baby clothes and knitted blankets in the box). I asked them to wait until I was at least 12 weekscouldn't stand the idea of it being here if I miscarried again!

Is anyone else experiencing ridiculous post-nasal drip/excessive pheglm? I wake up every morning gagging, this has been going on for weeks!

Uki · 24/02/2009 09:27

Hello everyone

trying hard to catch up, but not much time, thought i better post before i'm forgotten

WELCOME sarah- hope things brighten up for you, i'm still a bit paranoid and i'm 18 weeks tomorrow, hoping i'll get over it after next scan.

Babybump- new pram sounds fab, what a lucky baby

fibbertywigget- WELCOME glad to hear IVF worked so well for you, i have a cousin who wouldn't try which is sad coz sometimes it works perfectly, she would have been a fab mum, not going to happen now though.

Valz- it's good to shop and buy bargains if you see them, we have sales in june here so waiting a bit for that. also take into account how much people hand down and buy for you when babies are born, i don't know many mothers who aren't swamped with stuff from others.

my 18 week ultrasound is on thursday, hoping to hear happy healthy news and very excited to see bubba

valz · 24/02/2009 12:40

ah uki im jealous of your scan, ive another 6 weeks til mine, its seems soooo far away. i was gettin scanned every few weeks at the start. i thought i shouldve been having another about week 16-17 to check how the twins were growing as i dont know if they are identical yet and ive read there can be problems with one getting all the nutrients and the other struggles. think i might ring next week to see can i get a quick scan before then.

babybump any reccommendations on double buggies?

cairns · 24/02/2009 12:52

Just back from a long weekend away as DH's grandparents are v ill so quite a read to catch up.

Buying stuff now is an interesting one isn't it. I was so superstitous (Sp?) with DS that I waited until 33 wks before buying anything... that was a tad too late I think. This time I am already researching prams. I do think I'll need a double buggy for a toddler and newborn. But I can't believe how excited I am about buying stuff this time compared to last. So any good double buggy recommendations welcome here also

Hawkmoth · 24/02/2009 13:19

Sarah - re the phlegm - YES! Often wake up with that lovely taste of death in the back of my throat. Hoping it will settle down soon, but who knows!

Woke at 1250 today, and only cos DP telephoned. My poor daughter was fast asleep as well! Think she's got a cold coming on.

Feel like I MUST get back to work or I'll hibernate or something!

kitkatqueen · 24/02/2009 13:53

Babybump - have you got any info on rear facing inline double buggies? I have been searching lots and just not finding. My dd1 &2 were both in forward facing buggies almost straight away and with ds ( no3) i really didn't feel right about it - so I bought a rear facing traxx 3 wheeler which I can push one handed ( got to be able to hold a little ones hand at the same time) and I absolutley cannot believe the difference in my son. His speech and language developement have just improved so much. Trouble is I am going to have to have a double. I have bought an old style pram so that I can put a seat on the top, but I'm not convinced it will last too long. If anyone hears of anything please let me know!!

trixymalixy · 24/02/2009 13:58

Yes to the vile phlegm here too, yeuch!

kitkatqueen · 24/02/2009 14:03

ScummyMummy · 24/02/2009 14:43

yes here to reams of disgusting nasal blockedupness too. Sadly i read in my book that it's here to stay till birth as it's apparently the result of mucus membranes relaxing or somesuch- same reason we get bleeding gums, grr. Envious of all the prams and hammocks and nice stuff people are buying. Haven't got anything yet. Whole pregnancy thing is still taking backseat to ill fathers in law, work and general family life. Then I get a cute little movement and think oh wow- I'm gonna have another baby and feel all happy. This thread has a nice space to focus on being pregnant, actually.

sarah76 · 24/02/2009 19:59

Scummy, what's the latest on FIL? Went through this with my dad a few years back, know it can be hard.

Hawkmoth, maybe something in the air? I fell asleep again after taking DH to the station and slept until about 12:30 (only waking up at ringing phone). Where's this 2nd trimester promised burst of energy?

Uki, thanks for the welcome and good luck at your scan...looking forward to hearing about it. Will they be able to tell you the sex? Do you want to know?

Babybump, nice to hear from another North American. I am mistaken for Canadian a lot (from Wisconsin), and until Obama's election I was pretty happy not to correct people. We moved from London to Warrington because DH got a really good job and we wanted a better quality of life. We can actually afford a house in a decent area and DH can walk to work. However, it is lonely and unfamiliar, and it's a whole new accent to get used to. I've signed up for antenatal classes with the NCT, but doesn't start till June.

Glad I'm not the only one with gobs of phelgm hanging down the back of my throat. Without that, I'm sure I wouldn't be throwing up anywhere near as much. Speaking of that, shouldn't I be feeling better by now? My aunt (dad's sister) said her and her mom were sick all the way through their pregnancies--am soooo hoping this is one time I don't take after dad's side!

loopylou25 · 24/02/2009 20:26

hi all

sorry i havent posted in ages had a stressful few weeks was really poorly myself with chest and throat infection then my daughter got chicken pox.

Saw my midwife today for the first time at 16 weeks heard the heartbeat and have been having movements. Everything else is fine my bump seems to be growing by the day now feel massive already.

Sorry to everyone who is having a rough time hope it improves soon.

Does anyone have any recomendations for a double buggy for a big toddler and newborn was looking at phil and teds?

Chrysanthamum · 24/02/2009 20:31

Hello,
I had my scan on Friday and it went well. I'm so relieved. My due date has come forward by 5 days to 20 August. I have a 6 yr old and a one year old so we'll need a twin buggy. Can anyone recommend a good one? I like the look of the tandem one with seats facing each other but have only seen 1 review on this website.
I've got my cleaning frenzy already so unlike the real me! I wish I had time to just enjoy being pregnant but life is such a rush. Does anyone out there panic a bit about money?

Hawkmoth · 24/02/2009 20:47

Sarah - I can see why you'd think Warrington is a bit isolating. It always seems so sprawling to me, plus I inevitably get horribly lost every time I try to go anywhere other than Ikea or Mothercare!

It has been the phlegm that's set me off vomiting the last few times. That and having something cold on an empty stomach (SO old-womanish!).

nellyup · 24/02/2009 20:49

Hi

Just catching up with stuff, sorry to hear some of you are having a rough time with various things.

So much good stuff there on the nappies, thank you for all that. I'm definitely a cloth fan but finding the whole range of options bewildering having previously been stuck with what the laundry service offered (which I actually thought were pretty rubbish).

And now prams too. I'm excited because I get to buy a shiny new one, all our old ones having been run into the ground. I had my shortlist all sorted but now BabyBump's M&P Skate definitely needs checking out too, I rather like that!

I want a good stretchy sling too and that is like the nappies - a whole other world once you start looking into it! Still, its fun and nice to spend some time thinking about this baby who generally gets ignored unless it gives me a good kick in the ribs. I'm not sure how it reaches up there really, bump seems awfully high for 18 weeks but maybe its just got long legs!

trixymalixy · 24/02/2009 22:23

Scummy please tell me that'snot true, i don't think i can stand this phlegm until August.

Pregnancy is pretty grim though, i was at the doctor's today for her to swab my fanjo to check it's thrush and to stick her finger up my bum to check for piles. Both pregnancy related according to the doc.

The indignities of pregnancy have started much earlier this time!!

crysanthemum I read your post and thought "why would she put a 6 year old and a 1 year old in a double buggy, surely the 6 year old can walk!!!" Doh,pregnancy brain!!!

trixymalixy · 24/02/2009 22:24

PMSL at the unintentional snot in my last post!!

hippyme · 24/02/2009 22:50

Hi again... I have been underground for a while! Had my 12 week scan a few weeks ago and (phew) all is ok!

Have updated myself on the list as am a week earlier than first thought. Anyone on this post from South London area - think it might be nice to set up a mummies to be group? Get into coffee morning mode now!

I'm contemplating having a 4d scan? I'm desperate to know the sex - how impatient am I! Have any of you ladies had one? Would love to hear of any opinions...

Hippy {grin}
