Oooh Veggie I am a tiramisu obsessive too. I had a stunningly gorgeous one in Sicily this summer. I know we should not eat it while pregnant but how could I go to Sicily and not sample what they had to offer???

Turniphead1 · 03/12/2008 12:23

modernlove best of luck!!! How exciting. Hope everything kicks off for you without being induced. Let us know!

kayzisexpecting · 03/12/2008 12:25

Veggie I have looked on Ebay but they all seem to be buyer to collect and they are all down south.
I'm glad you are feeling a better today. I will join you on your quest for the best Tiramisu. There is an italian restaurant in York and so far it has to be the best. But I have never been to Italy, so maybe I will find one there. I have to say that DH's is very good too.

Sorry Cat I am sure I should know, but what are the issues about you having a HB? What was she concerned about?
Grrrr at the "you can do what you want" so bloody passive agressive. Good on you for sticking to your guns and well done your DP.

Veggiemummy · 03/12/2008 12:42

oh Cat well done to you and your DP for sticking to your guns, but why does something that is really better for all involved have to be so difficult. If you feel you may need some more support i think AIMS and the homebirth website people can help at least with information about your rights etc. But really birth is so much better when you don't have to be surrounded with so much stress. Like Turnip i don't really understand what her problem was.

Turniphead1 · 03/12/2008 12:54

Sorry have to share this (in the intro to the Waterbirth Book by Janet Balaskas). It's called the Baby Blessing (apologies to those who have heard it before, I hadn't)

"Before you were conceived
I wanted you
Before you were born
I loved you
Before you were here an hour
I would die for you
This is the miracle of life"

Made me sob!

abbymeg · 03/12/2008 12:58

Kayz fingers crossed for HB then!

Modernlove Good luck!

Veggie and Arti if you ever find a truly good tiramisu, do post - DH goes mad for them; though have to agree, we tend to be more successful at finding good Italian deserts in Italy, or Sicily, than in this country (unsurprisingly!), but I do try to humour him in his foodie quests.

Scan, despite worries, was fine. Baby is sitting right on top of the growth chart for everything. He weighs around 8 and a bit lbs now, which makes him a tiddler compared to DD. Hopefully he'll be around 9 to 9 and half when he's born. I'm just working on the assumption that the estimates are correct; they were over 2lbs out with DD. Still, it's elective c-section regardless so I'm not too worried. I just hope I can establish feeding this time as I really struggled with DD and she ended up on bottles.

Veggiemummy · 03/12/2008 13:01

oh Turnip that is lovely. I want him out to cuddle now.

Veggiemummy · 03/12/2008 13:05

good news on the scan Abbey.

maybe i could do a study on the effectiveness of eating Tiramisu when trying to establish breastfeeding. I would obviously need to eat them regularly.

kayzisexpecting · 03/12/2008 13:07

Abby Take DH(nah get him to take you) to Tuscany in York. Their Tiramisu is gorgeous!!! I could eat loads of it. I have told DH to make me one when the baby comes.

Turnip That is really lovely.

Veggiemummy · 03/12/2008 13:29

bugger the cat has just come downstairs limping. DH and i just had a little arguement about him the other day about whether we should get pet insurance i said it was a waste because he is a young cat. I have just thrown cat treats around the room to make him go get the so i can watch him walk, i think he has something his paw, but he won't let me look at it.

Bisou · 03/12/2008 14:17

Hi ladies. Boy this thread is really flying now isn't it?

modernlove great to see you back here, and don't worry about lurking, I'm sure there's a few more people on our list who are the same - it's hard to keep up sometimes! Hope everything goes really well for the impending birth & look forward to hearing your news, how exciting!

IceCube hope things get moving for you soon, must be a bit frustrating to be having bump tightenings but not having things progress. Sending you some lovely 'get a move on baby' vibes.

GBB, PD and verso thanks for the fantastic BF links, I've copied them all down. Nice to have the reassurance that if things are tricky there are some great websites I can resort to for information/videos.

traceface hope all those prunes don't result in the runs with your DD1 Think I could do with a few prunes at the moment... I'll have to get stuck into the bag of apricots I opened the other day!

katie has perhaps had her baby by now? Bum, I missed wishing her luck kayz - I wouldn't mind being like your friend & not knowing I was having contractions (but could go without the layby and jeering construction workers bit of course). Glad you & DH have decided on the HB, don't let them try to talk you out of it, as tyv said, you can always change your mind and head to the hospital if preferred on the day. On a similar note, on behalf of catdean - that's terrible that they made you 'fight for your right' of a HB. tsk tsk!

PD if you want the GBS swab, could you arrange one yourself if you're still worried? Also for waitinggirl, I would see if your hospital can do it for you if you want one (mine said I could have one at 38wks if I wanted but they normally do it a bit earlier). Anyway Turniphead posted a great link to the place where she had hers done, it's here so perhaps just give them a call and ask how long it takes if either of you are interested but can't get it done by yr hospital?

veggie in the news here in Australia tonight on TV , there was a report about a lieutenant who died in Afghanistan being flown back into Sydney, and of course I did think of you straight away. So very sad xxx

jumpjockey, lal07 and LadyT - GREAT birth stories, thank you SO much! It's so useful to read them as it really does help me mentally prepare for the fact that every birth is unique and somewhat unpredictable - I second the call for "100 different births" thread on mumsnet... I'd even buy a book on the topic! Hope all you new mums are enjoying your time with your beautiful bubbies.

Also jump and theyoungvisiter do you have names/birth weights for your gorgeous HB bubs yet?

JB I had to look up what 'parkin' was - that means somethin you do with your car over 'ere Sounds yummy.

Verso how adorable your DD1 is! I read that to my DH and we both went "awwww". I hope the BF & sleeping continue to improve for you, you deserve it. xxx

HOORAY about baby mibbes' arrival !! Thanks for letting us know kate

arti what a PITA that you're unwell; glad to hear you're improving though, hope it continues.

Jam sounds like a bit of a nightmare with the pelvis/groin pain, hope you get it sorted soon (and that babyjam comes sooner rather than later). Have you seen a doctor about it? Sounds like you're having a really hard time of it

penny my DH is addicted to mince pies, but we are going to make our own again this year as it's not too hard, and he says they always taste better than the shop ones. You can just buy pastry & the mincemeat & do them in the oven. Might not be so practical when yr bub comes though! LOL

WG regards the maternity bras, I was surprised when the lactation consultant here said that post birth I may very well fit the bras I am in now, as she said that after the initial couple of days when your milk comes in, they then settle down and get back to a similar size. Although I'm sure there are exceptions to this, as every woman is different. So I've just got some general BF vest things and stretchy cotton tops for those days, and a few maternity bras that I fit now, and will go and get some more bras post-baby if needs be. I hate the idea on spending money on a nice bra that may not necessarily fit well when it needs to. I've always been pretty fussy about the fit & shape of my bras though. penny - I'm surprised what the John Lewis lady said though about having more room in the cup when the rib cage goes back to normal - as surely the cup size in the bra won't change from what it already is (although you may find the under-bust band will feel more roomy)? I might be getting confused though with what is meant there. I used to fit bras (not maternity though) and found that in general the same cup size in different size bands will vary, but they usually get less generous as the band diameter decreases (eg: the cup in a 34D is a slightly smaller than the cup in a 36D). It's really hard to explain, hope that is clear I think I'll just wait till baby's here to buy any more bras just in case!

kayz also wanted to say regards pools, I've heard the inflatable intex ones are good. Maybe do a bit of a search and see if you can find what people recommend for a cheap but effective birthing pool - and then afterwards you can always use it in the summer for a bit of a splash!

BTW I believe it was 31 degrees here today, just so you all know (actually I was a bit hot so it's not all that great after all if it makes y'all feel any better!)

Turnip - that intro is beautiful

and abby glad the scan was fine.

PHEW that was a lot to write out! It's pretty much time for bed for me now. I might just have to post an updated birth list before I do though...

hiccymapops · 03/12/2008 14:26

Hello everyone

Congratulations mibbes Lovely name, hope you're both doing well.

Sorry if there's been any more births, i've got to read through the new thread, i've fallen very behind again. My little man's been poorly, up all weekend, he's got an ear, nose and throat infection, so the poor little mite's suffering On the plus side, i'm actually managing to get some antibiotics into him, which is a first!

Turnip that verse is lovely, it really made me fill up.

Hope your cat's okay Veggie, we've got both dogs insured, but not our cat, my DH keeps saying there's no need for the cat for some reason he seems to think they don't get ill. I think it's because he's technically not ours, the neighbours moved and left him, so we took him in, and i'm not sure if i need all his history to get him insured. Anyway, hope yours is okay.

Right, i'm going to try and read the rest of the thread before my little monster wakes up.

Veggiemummy · 03/12/2008 14:34

Hi Bisou, yeah that was my cousin. My mum is going down for his memorial service in Armidale as that is near where my Aunt & Uncle live. Many of us cousins are all over the world now so many of us won't be able to get to it, but our parents are all going along. bless my funny mum she said in one report they used a good picture of him, he did sometimes look a bit dorky but she said the one they used he looked quite cool. Sometimes mums say weird things.

Veggiemummy · 03/12/2008 14:36

thanks Hiccy, i'm pretty sure he has something in his paw will get DH to look when he gets home.

SummerLightning · 03/12/2008 14:42

Hello everyone! My last day at work hooray!!

Got nowt to do now. So just going to twiddle around tidying up for an hour or so more then bugger off!

Congrats mibbes, hope you are recovering ok!

kayz you don't really need a pool for a homebirth do you anyway?

I am suddenly having bad period type pains. I hope he is not arriving. Tomorrow is my birthday he is not allowed to come then!! Also I haven't done my Christmas shopping and my friend who was meant to be lending me her TENS machine hasn't had her baby yet!! Sure it is nothing though, or the baby moving down or something.

Veggiemummy · 03/12/2008 14:57

oh SL hope he is not being cheeky. oh and happy birthday for tomorrow. Mines on sunday and i do not want to be in labour on my birthday. I've had people say wouldn't a baby be a lovely birthday present. No way i'm getting a baby anyway it doesn't have to get given to me on my birthday.

SummerLightning · 03/12/2008 15:00

Hopefully he is just teasing me!

And the birthpool still has a puncture. They are meant to be sending a replacement (seeing as it was punctured when we got it)
DH knows where the puncture is though so he can fix it if necessary.

hiccymapops · 03/12/2008 15:01

Just a thought, but i've booked my Christmas slot for the supermarket shop as i can't face shopping this year. Thought i'd mention it as they get booked up really fast, and we'll all have more important things to think about this year

Veggiemummy · 03/12/2008 15:09

SL we were laughing last night as our instructions on the birthpool said if it got a puncture (as in after it had arrives) that we could use the puncture kit or gaffer tape!!! a bit mr fixit we thought. Would gaffer tape hold over a puncture. We have now semi inflated it and have it in the basement. I was worried if we left it in the front room inflated the cat would put a claw into it. I want to fill it up and have a go looks so comfy.

Veggiemummy · 03/12/2008 15:16

I just checked ocado and there is nothing available from the 20th December, i'm hoping they just haven't got the slots sorted.

SummerLightning · 03/12/2008 15:16

I dunno if gaffer tape would work!! I guess they wouldn't suggest it unless it might at least as a last resort. I would just use the puncture kit that came with it, maybe a bike puncture kit would work also, or maybe that wouldn't stick so well.

We debated just fixing the pool but seeing as we didn't puncture it and it came like that we thought we should get a replacement.

kayzisexpecting · 03/12/2008 15:18

Wow Bisou what a great post!!!

SL No I don't need a pool but I just think it would be nice to try to labour in a pool. Might be a bit more comfy.

I am so tired this afternoon. I can feel my eyes closing and I keep having to force them open. I might just give in as DS is so into Peppa Pig I doubt he'll mind me having a little snooze.
