Emmalina It's pronounced 'Tollemy'.

Cote depends what you mean by 'in use'. There's an architectural historian on TV called Ptolemy Dean and a couple of people on the thread have mentioned people/babies with the name. But it's certainly not commonly in use, no.

It's only one of the names on our list but I do quite like it (even though it appears to be regarded as extremely pretentious). Because it's so unusual I was wondering what reactions would be - not for me, as I don't care what people think of our choice, but for the child. The answer seems to be 90% 'no' with opinions ranging from, 'it's a bit pretentious' to 'your son will grow up to be an utter twat' . There are a few who like it, though.

Rubysmom08 · 11/12/2008 20:17

hi ladies

Hope you are all doin OK, have had a lile read and it is good that so many people are open about PND. I suffered with Ruby although my anxiety was a delayed reaction to my dad's death (he died 3 yrs ago at the age of 51 he was a chronic alcoholic) and all the miscarriages I suffered so I was petrified of lossing Ruby. Something asd straight forward as putting petrol in the car would make me have a panic attack because I would worry the car would catch fire and I wouldn't be able to get Ruby out. I still get those thoughts- like today I closed the stair gate upstairs and for about ten mins I was having visions of Ruby falling down the stairs- horrible.

I am still having counselling and it is working, I was on an anti-anxiety drug until I got pregnant again but I don't think I was on them long enough to seem a marked improvement, the counseller I am seeing is ace tho.

Had a horrible experience at my 16 week check today- firstly I hate having blood taken and suprise suprise they had lost my bloods from my 12 week check so before she takes my blood pressure I am told this and shockingly my BP went sky high and to top it off it took ages to find the babes heart beat- I thought something was wrong!

I have also opted for the triple test. we chose not to with Ruby becuase she was our first and the decision to continue the pregnancy would have only affected us- we have debated it and we would not have further testing nor would we consider ending this pregnancy if the resulkts came back bad but it would buy us time to make the proper arrangements I suppose. My midwife said that due to me being 26 and having a successful pg last time that I shouldn't worry.

On a lighter note my 10 month old little star said duck in the bath tonight! We were sitting in the bath with all her toys and she picked up the duck and went to give it to me saying ' mamama duck'!!! Kids are such a blessing!!

MatthewAndBumpsMummy · 11/12/2008 20:37

hi all, hope all mums and bumps are doing well. hope your feeling better now nikki.

trying to keep up with things but its so hard so much happens in just a few days.

i think the name ptolemy is really unusal but also very nice, i think its nice to have a unique name and from my experience children at school always find ways to make jokes about your name whatever it is they find a way! so id go with it myself.

congratulations to all that have had there 20wk scans i cant wait for mine but its not till 12th Jan seems like ages away. we wanna find out the sex so thats why i cant wait!

i think the morning sickness is finally starting to ease still have some bad days but alot less now which is such a relief. i was finding it so hard to keep things up together it was really getting me down specially with christmas looming, that always brings more kaos and ds's room is already bursting at the seams! but finally managed to start sorting and got christmas presents pretty much done which feels good.

me and ds have had flu for the last week and only just starting to get better 2day, being ill and having a poorly 3yr old is not fun.

Hallo Ladies - I'm back!!

Spangle thanks for letting people know - you were aboslutely right, got back from a business trip to South Africa this morning. OMG how I missed my sproggle - her little face lit up this morning in the airport bless her. So we have had a lovely day playing at home with lots of snuggles and kisses. Played with the washing up bowl full of water and the lounge, DD and I got very wet indeed but induced lots of giggles!!

Spangle also I have just realised that I haven't sent you the top I promised you - I only remembered tonight in the kitchen as I was looking through the post. I promise I'll send it this weekend! So sorry Huge congratuations on your little man as well (tho I have to say I side with [hmm} for Ptolemy)

Well done to everyone else with good scans - hopefully we'll all be in a better position to relax after Crimbo. I'm huge BTW - big bump and generally piled weight on everywhere - will need to focus on this afterwards - not worrying about it now tho.

Now my trip is over (had to work long hours to get my workshop prep done) and then had to present from 9 - 6 so was pretty bamboozled. I'm not doing much in the line of work up to Christmas from now on!! Still got loads of stuff to do for Crimbo only really bought DDs pressies....oops!!!

Ok may have to go - only on battery and cables in case whichi is still in the car and its way too cold to venture out there

Oh BTW DP did a FAB job of house an dchild care in my absence - he's great and i lurrvvve him

Hello everyone, boy you all talk! Far too much for me to comment on everything.

I haven't been around for a few days because DD and I have had a horrible cold, with temperatures and coughs and everything. There's been a lot of sitting on the sofa under the blanket feeling sorry for ourselves! Back at work today but still don't feel great really.

detsy · 11/12/2008 22:02

DP got my cable so back on full power now, woo hoo.

I'm not finding out the sex of Pip - like someone else mentioned I want a little surprise. I would have no idea what to do with a boy either but i guess you learn as you go along. I don't "think" I have any preference tho if i had to make choice i'd say a girl just because of my experience to date with DD.

detsy · 11/12/2008 22:08

Oh had yummy fish and chips for tea with chip butties and mushy peas, mmm mmm.

Flippineck poor you - there is so much stuff about. I've been coughing like an old tramp since I got off the plane.

I've given up with waiting for DD constant cold and runny eyes to clear up - it must have been going on for about 3 months now. So am calling a homeopath tomo - i really set a lot of store in this stuff and used it in my prev pregnancy. Guess you can only try and if it helps her to feel better then that will be great! We had great success with the bach's flower remedies and her being stressed and clingy at start of nursery so think it is worth a go!

detsy · 11/12/2008 22:15

Ah so now its me talking to myself - I have to catch up on my chatting tho. I'm so thirsty due to having a ton of salt and vinegar on my chips. Currently into diet fizzy vimto.

Felt some little wriggles before and have been feeling them all week. Could see some movement when I was lying in the bath as well. But is not often and i only notice it when i'm still and quiet.

Is anyone else suffering verrucas? I got them with last pgncy and have them again - chiropodist says its quite common as immune system is low and as we swim every week its not surprising. The pain is that theres nothing to treat them with that is approved - apparently you can use duck tape to suffocate them but it takes weeks and you have to be strict about changing the tape. Am trying it tho.

Right off to look at names and stuff..

frazzledoldbag34 · 11/12/2008 22:25

Hello detsy welcome back!
Spangle big congrats on your boy! I'm sure he'll be everything you want him to be (and a lot more too).....although must admit Ptolemy is not a name I'd use. But then, you probably wouldn't use any of my choices either - to each his own!
Don't have much to say tonight other than 'Blah Christmas Shopping hell'. Sorry don't have time to comment on everyones news (very rude I know). Will chat properly soon.....
Sleep well ladies and bumps x

frazzledoldbag34 · 11/12/2008 22:26

Sorry - enormous baby bump must have touched the mouse pad thingy! Didn't mean to do that. Bump is very pointy today ....... whatever can it mean.......? ???

JennstarOfWonder · 11/12/2008 22:39

Verruccas. Blummin had a ginormous one since I got pregnant with dd who will be 3 in January. In the 2 short times between the 3 pregnancies I've gone through 20 treatments of Wartner. You know that wart treatment that is meant to work after one use? Don't bother it's useless.

detsy · 11/12/2008 23:27

LOL jennstar - i'll stick with my duck tape then - its worked for a tiny one but the other 2 are more dobbing

Due1stMay09 · 12/12/2008 08:11

Hiya everyone im sorry i havent been on here for a week its taken me a while to catch up! Glad everyones scans went well. I have mine on tues i cant wait!
Well, half way through now and bump is huge all ready and i cannot stop eating!
Only a quick post today got to go to work will probably be on again next week, hopefully before scan. Have a good weekend everyone speak soon

MissyK · 12/12/2008 09:10

It's official, my bump is massive & I feel like I have a belly full of eels this morning.
Had to see the midwife again yesterday as I had a dizzy spell due to low bp while out with ds & promptly threw up in the street. Got advised by my friends mum (who was with s) to go straight in for a uti check.
She couldn't find the heartbeat, but only as the baby kept wriggling away & kicking the doppler.

DH's works party is tomorrow night so I'm trying to relax & gather my energy as I'm sure it will be a late one - though since being pregnant 10pm is late to me!!

I want the weekend to be over so I can have my scan, Monday seems like an age away at the moment!!

Off to find some toast I think

joyfuleyes · 12/12/2008 09:13

Spangle my brother's best friend's son is called Ptolemy (Tolly), he's 6 now. An online friend has a baby Ptolemy too. I love it

I'm 16 weeks today, all 5 scans I've had so far have been fine, next one is a week on Monday. Baby is getting dopplered everyday & its little heart is pounding away (always 145-150bmp), there's lots of movement which I'm starting to feel. Still very anxious, I want to get past the 20 week scan before I'll even start thinking about maybe having a baby.

EmmalinaC · 12/12/2008 09:57

Just popping in to say good morning!

At work today - we've got our Christmas party today starting with champagne at noon. Have already made noises about slipping away after lunch!

Detsy and Jenn am so pleased you mentioned verrucas. Mine has been a dirty secret since I had DD and I too have tried various treatments with no success. Since getting pregnany again it's reproduced and is now a cluster - eeeeeeeeeuwwww. I had no idea they are pg related. Will try the duct tape treatment!

Jael · 12/12/2008 10:19

DD is feeling alot better today, but has made my symptoms ALOT worse! I've had cold/flu on and off for ages now, I normally have the flu jab but MW reccomended I didn't have it this year, so now I'm full of it. I really am going to have to take something for it, or I'm going to feel like poo over Christmas, and were going to London over the weekend, to see Santa in Harrods and visit DD's Nanny and granddad. Any reccomendations of what I can take, can't take? Paracetamol by itself is not workin

daizydoo · 12/12/2008 10:29

Jael if you find anything to take for your cold plse let me know! I've had 3 in 2 months and now Ive had a hacking cough all week and it's not just driving me mad, DH has ended up sleeping on the sofa a couple of times this week and the chemist told DH theres nothing I can take

I'm feeling quite down today. Think its the lack of sleep and when I get a really bad coughing fit I pee myself

Glad to hear everyones scans have gone well. Mine is on Christmas Eve!

Momino · 12/12/2008 10:57

morning all.
girls just left with inlaws to stay for the weekend. i'm a little sad but it does feel good to have a bit of free time. Going to do some work today (reeeally?).

Spangle, i love Ptolomey - was on my list with Atticus for boys names the last 2 pregnancies but still not sure whether we'd been brave enough to use either - had a lot of friends wrinkle noses (rule - don't tell friends name choices beforehand). anyway, never had the chance to use them, not confident we'll need a boy's name this time either (one can never be sure though.....).

funny with unusual names how, when you have one, you suddenly find others with the same. dd1 is India which I thought was slightly unusual but now know at least 10 in the last year. dd2 is Saskia and, although I know one or two, find fewer Saskia's

bantam73 · 12/12/2008 10:57

Hi everyone

JAEL - I had THE cold/flu twice over the last couple of months and I found old fashioned hot honey and lemon drink plus head over a bowl of hot water made me feel better.

I have a problem that I've been cold clear for a week now and mil is due to visit this weekend but she has been off work all week with the cold/flu and fil has a bad cough. I have said that I would prefer they did not visit this wk as I don't want it back but they said they will be fine by sunday.

They don't seem to understand I'm an a asthmatic and it is not good for me to get another cold, the doctor has had to triple my steriod dose so I can walk to the shops with out an attack.

Sorry to waffle so much. I needed to say something to someone before I lost it completely.

Momino · 12/12/2008 10:58

or even 'Ptolemy' ....

Jael · 12/12/2008 11:21

I'm asthmatic too, and the coughing is driving me mad, I keep wheezing sooo much, and my unhelpful doctor told me to ease off the pump, very easy to say if you haven't got asthma yourself! Am going to get DP to go chemist later and talk to the lady he normally does, who is very nice, hopefully she can give me something, I feel so bleugh!

pulapula · 12/12/2008 11:32

I think giving a child the name Ptolemy in Sheffield would come across v pretentious. Its not a name i've come across before.

I tend to go for names in the top 10 or 20 (playing it safe I know). Hence Katie and Ben for my DCs.

I am moving away from Charlie back to Samuel (Sam) or Harry for a boy. I like William (Billy) too but a friend has it as her favourite name and it feels a bit mean to take it. Emily or Millie for a girl...
