Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Hi Heron,
Yes had lots of scans since discovering GD (at about 30 weeks). Last scan was last week at 36 weeks exactly and baby was 7lbs dead on. DD weighed in at 8lb 13oz so I'm hoping that this one will be a little bit smaller .
Yes, getting induced early because of GD. My consultant has a policy of inducing between 38 and 40 weeks for all ladies with GD, regardless of the predicted size of the baby. Consultant has been excellent and has fully prepared me for the complications which may or may not arise with the baby after it's born - I'd rather know everything in advance, so it suits me. This way I'll be pleasantly surprised if the baby does not need to go into SCBU. Trying not to beat myself up about the whole GD thing, but it's hard knowing that at the very least I'm inflicting 3 hourly heel prick tests on my newborn for the first few days . I've also been told that we'll likely be in hospital for about 4 days post delivery to make sure that the baby's blood sugar is properly stabilised - although apparently this is easier as I've not been on insulin.
How are you getting on with metformin? I've been lucky, not had any side effects and have managed to lose a fair bit of (my ample) weight.

hi heathersmum

did not know that baby needs to be tested like that after being born

i was taking metformin 500mg twice a day, morning and night. and tracking my blood glucose. the last few days, my blood glucose has been high, even before breakfast, so doc upped my meds - to 3 tabs per day.

i know what u mean about feeling guilty. i have tried not to look at side effects GD might have on my baby. surely when ur baby is born, he/she wont have to go into special unit? or is this to do with you having GD?

just out of interest, how high was your blood sugar prior to taking metformin? my highest was around 12.

my baby will prob have to be born early (my consultant has scheduled me 10 days early even before GD reared its ugly head, cos i had pre-eclampsia with DS) and since i had a section last time, prob another section - i dont mind cos at least i know what i am up for.

BTW, i have another scan scheduled in 2 weeks. looks like my baby will be around 9 lbs at full term. i am of small stature, but DH is very tall.

So funny all you ladies jigging around with the due list... i seem to be lucky enough to be staying on it.

Good to hear from you ladies who have been a little quiet, although yes... Moosemama has been off for a while. Hoping your ok Moosey!

Heathersmummy- hadn't realised you were so soon... Really getting close now. All the best!

LenniEd · 09/12/2008 21:11

Yep - I've got one of those homeopathic remedy kits - am also looking forward to trying it out, kind of! Arnica 30c also handy (not in the kit) to take in the last few days of pregnancy, although not entirely sure on what the actual recommendations are on that.

Yet more niggles and things tonight - saw midwife earlier and everything ok. Said that some women were prone to long pre-labours and loads of false alarms, something to do with your uterus. Didnt get chance to ask any questions though so none the wiser. BP really low though so that has put my mind at rest after all the nightmares about pre-eclampsia.

How excitng that you are so close HeathersMummy, hope it all goes well on Monday. How exciting!

elkiedee · 09/12/2008 21:38

Welcome Heron

I've not had the greatest day today, dp knew I was feeling ill before I did this morning, tried lying down for a bit to ease my sickness but it didn't work. Then soon after I got to work we had a power cut which lasted nearly 4 hours - not being able to get on with my work just left me feeling sorry for myself in a cold dark office. It took an extra hour for email to be restored which is fairly critical for me and my boss, as he's blind and tends to rely on the contents of his inbox via special software/equipment which offers braille display and reading aloud in a horrid electronic voice! Then just as I'd nearly finished a piece of work, at last, computers crashed again, as there was another power cut elsewhere in our building. I really want to get my work tidied up as best I can and only have 6.5 days left in the office, but I really wished I'd given up on dragging myself in today.

peasoup · 09/12/2008 22:19

Heron22- I spotted your name on a few other threads and your posts caught my eye as I will be 42 very soon and am just about to start TTC, so I was very heartened to spot someone who'd successfully conceived at 42! I read somewhere that you'd had acupuncture to help boost fertility. Would you mind telling me where you had it done and by whom, so I can look into having it done myself? Thanks!

chefswife · 09/12/2008 23:41

had a very exciting day yesterday. went to vancouver to do a bit of shopping and got some neat pieces from ikea. as the ship was docking in victoria, and we were walking back to the truck to disembark, there was a gush... of water. thought i just wet myself again. that was 4.30pm. i was in total denial to what was happenning. we got groceries, unloaded the truck, had a bit of dinner, then by 8pm, i came to terms with the fact that indeed i was in labour. when DH rang the midwife, she almost didn't believe it. sh got to the house at midnight and i was completely diliated. violet may was born at home at 2.25 am PCT, 6pounds, 7ounces and very healthy.

so, i guess i'm the first out the gate ladies... early by almost a month. it happened so quickly. we don't even quite have everything ready. well, funny how it doesn't really matter.

Shanster · 10/12/2008 03:10

Congrats Chefswife!! Glad to hear everything went well! 4 weeks early...hope I follow your lead!! Ours is sitting transverse right now, but hopefully she'll figure out how to get her head in position soon. Getting tired of being pregnant now, I want to see what she looks like!!

Periwink · 10/12/2008 07:16

Ah Chefswife - your post gave me goosies! I had to read it twice could not quite believe the time is fast arriving for us to start delivering our little babies!!!!! Congratulations on the arrival of Violet, what fantastic news and yes you are the first.... 4 weeks early!!!! Wishing you many happy times together - please keep us posted and post a picture on your profile when you get a spare minute.

Spink · 10/12/2008 08:14

Chefswife!! you are queen of the understatement as well as queen of the early babes! "a very exciting day", huh????
CONGRATULATIONS, you sound incredibly perky was it like shelling peas then?

LenniEd · 10/12/2008 08:32

Wow! What lovely news to wake up to! CONGRATULATIONS!

heron22 · 10/12/2008 09:34

hi peasoup

i had acupuncture done at zita west clinic london to boost natural fertility. and i really felt the difference. basically i had a session done at start of my cycle, one prior to ovulation, one after and one before AF.

i got pregnant after 2 cycles!

also i used pre-seed, and clearblue fertility test kit so i knew when i was ovulating.

i cannot stress enough that the acupuncturist said during that fertile week, need to BD 4-5 times. poor DH was exhausted but we did it and it worked. sorry if this is too much info !

good luck with ttc

heron22 · 10/12/2008 09:35

CONGRATS chefswife!

i have been thinking about packing my hospital bag - i think i should!

MissHairspray · 10/12/2008 10:05

Congrats Chefswife that is really exciting. You sound so calm - or is it shock hope family are all doing well.

Heathersmummy i'm not jealous of everything you are going through because it must be hard, but it also must be good knowing exactly when your little one will arrive. I find it really strange that mine could arrive anytime between now and the 19th Jan.

I finished work on Mon and to be honest it is...weird. I keep thinking about all of the stuff I left for other people to do at work and hoping everything has gone OK but have so far resisted the urge to ring and 'check'. I'm not some kind of work obsessive usually but it is hard to let go. I have done a list of other things I want to get done in the next couple of weeks (again, i'm not usually like this) but after Chefswife announcement the hospital bag has shot right to the top of my list!
Went to see the midwife yesterday and the good news is he is 3/5 engaged, so at least he is head down, but unfortunately back to back to. I am now too paranoid to relax into any comfy chair as I really want him to move, particularly as i'm going into a MLU with no epidurals. Also went on the hospital tour yesterday though and it is really nice, very small and probably about as homely as you could get in hospital.

rrrayray · 10/12/2008 10:37

Congratulations Chefswife
Sounds like a lovely Calm birth, Hope your loving getting to know Violet!!!

rrrayray · 10/12/2008 10:40

Oh, and miss hairspray, bubba was back to back for me too at last midwife appointment, and you'll be surpirsed how easy it is for them to move. its not like she has to flip, just roll one side or the other. My midwife said

  1. like you said don't sit in "bucket chairs" where your knees are higher than your pelvis.
  1. Do you have a swiss/birthing ball? Apparently thats the ideal position to be sitting in.
  1. Crawling around on all fours for 15 mins?! (NCT class recommended this!)

Good luck!!

looweeza · 10/12/2008 10:47

hey everyone - don't post very often but thought i'd share the news.

last wednesday 3rd i gave myself a shock and went into labour, 4 and a half weeks early, and gave birth to our son on thursday 4th dec.

we stayed in hospital for a few days as i lost quite a bit of blood but all fantastic now..baby very well (7 lbs 13) and gorgeous and like chefswife we've just had the best early xmas present ever!

hope everyone's well - hardly need to say this but first timers should know that this is the best feeling in the world...

l x
