Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
egyptianprincess · 03/04/2008 13:46

congrats to denny too!
can someone please tell me what exactly a sweep entails? is it supposed to induce labor? can anybody ask for one? sorry for all the questions but i dont think we covered this during our ante natal classes. Im still trying to pluck up the courage to eat another ENTIRE pineapple. For some reason it really made my tongue burn.

AussieDivaOnABreak · 03/04/2008 13:52

EP, a sweep involves the MW inserting a finger (or two if poss) inside your cervix and then moving them around in a circle, gently easing the membranes away from the cervix. It is supposed to induce labour by releasing prostaglandins (evening primrose oil works in the same way - apparently you can insert capsules into yourself to dissolve and get your hormone hit that way - or sex of course!) Your cervix has to be "ripe" enough for the MW to get her finger in tho, and it can be a little painful if it's not entirely ready and quite far back.

Mum2b2BabyRoo · 03/04/2008 13:53

I love pineapple but am now to scared to eat it in case it triggers things! Pineapple also burns my tongue!

AussieDivaOnABreak · 03/04/2008 13:54

I wouldn't put too much store on the whole pineapple thing tho as a way of inducing labour. But it is very good for treating inflamation (it contains bromelain) so at least you'll be helping yourself to recover faster!

scorpio1 · 03/04/2008 13:56

The MW could get 2 fingers in mine on Tuesday; she wrote on notes that it was soft too - must be close, lol.

egyptianprincess · 03/04/2008 14:05

thanks Aussie Diva. Will ask the midwife when i see her on my due date. we tried sex last night- was disappointing on a number of levels!

AussieDivaOnABreak · 03/04/2008 14:07

Sounds promising, definitely. I feel a little left out of all of this - no random contractions, no show, nada. When is my lo going to get things going! Arrgh it does my head in thinking about it too much, I'll just have to come up with more distractions for myself . I'm dreaming I'm going into labour every night!

VictorianSqualor · 03/04/2008 14:10

The amount of pneapple needed is apparently about 7!

I had one for breakfast on saturday and it burnt my tongue too.

I've been taking the evening primrose and am gonna mke DP do it down there too, also taking black cohosh which is suppsoed to ripen the cervix, hopefully by monday it will be ripe enough to actually do a proper sweep and seperate the membranes which supposedly combined with a walk can induce labour in a day or so.

At least I can find out how favourable my cervix is then as well so will know if I'm likely to go into labour and if there is any point putting the CS off for a few days.

VictorianSqualor · 03/04/2008 14:15

Oh also, the pineapple should be eaten on an empty stomach, I'd say take the evening primrose myself! Much easier.

PortAndLemon · 03/04/2008 14:21

DS was 10lb 5oz so from my point of view DD seems positively dinky! I am getting to use newborn size clothes this time, at least.

Mollyfloss · 03/04/2008 14:22

Congrats Denny!

The babies are quite big alright! At my 35 week scan they told me that they would expect the baby to be about 7lbs if she continues growing at an average rate. I feel like I have had a bit of a growth spurt the last couple of weeks though. How accurate are they at the scans anyway?
I am exactly 10 days to my due date but don't feel as if this LO is coming out anytime soon... She seems quite content in there, kicking away to her hearts content

egyptianprincess · 03/04/2008 14:22

7 pineapples! I think I'll quit while Im ahead and still have a tongue. i bought something called squaw vine from neals yard remedies yesterday- supposed to be another uterus toner which you can take along with raspberry tea leaf too- it's kinda gross but I shall persevere. maybe need to get some evening primrose oil too. also got some lavender oil but when i got home i realized i have no idea how to burn it. im very new to all this homepathy stuff. does anyone know what kind of burning mechanism i need to buy?

AussieDivaOnABreak · 03/04/2008 14:33

Sounds like you're doing everything you can VS. Really hoping you get results. x

Same here Mollyfloss...my baby seems very happy just stretching and kicking about with no hint of a desire to emerge. (sigh)

Mollyfloss · 03/04/2008 14:51

Yep, she's in the right position ready to go but just seems quite comfy staying at the starting line. Can't say I mind now. I'm happy enough for her to stay in there for another while. However, in a couple of weeks I might be like some of the others on this thread, trying every natural induction method possible!

Piccalilli2 · 03/04/2008 15:07

Afternoon all.

Having a very annoying day - if I stand up and walk around I have constant back pain and contractions every 10-15 minutes, but if I sit down and relax it all goes away again. What do you wise ladies think? Pre-labour? How long could this go on??

I had a whole fresh pineapple every day for a week when I was overdue with dd1, did absolutely nothing at all for me.

Peachy · 03/04/2008 15:09

Piccallilli, sounds like LO is low and triggering BH's, if it were true labour it wouldn't stop- but BH's may trigger labour proper?

Have just popped the bump pic we took at 8 months into my profile finally! I should emphasise though to ignore the seriously awful hair- had it cut short on Tuesday and it's much better now LOL

Piccalilli2 · 03/04/2008 15:10

Thanks Peachy - I may try having a little bounce on my birthing ball, see if that gets things going.

Soph73 · 03/04/2008 15:16

Sounds like you´re all working hard to get things going I haven´t had pineapple for ages & now I´ve been reading about them I´ll have to go and get one ... but not 7

lorisparkle · 03/04/2008 15:33

What a busy time on here. Congratulations to Denny and RainbowDays. That labour sounds scarily short to me.

VS - sounds like your experiences have been pretty bad. I wish I had complained about the way the midwife treated me as I felt traumitised for months afterwards and would cry if I ever thought about when DS1 was born. It really annoys me as this should have been a positive time and some stupid cow ruined it for me. Luckily another rather fantastic midwife sorted out the BF for me and I was lucky to have loads of support. I hope things go well for you this time. From reading your posts I always imagine you to be a very strong person.

Fantastic bump Peachy!

I had an 8lb 11oz LO last time so am expecting another bigger than average one this time. Good news is though I am sure last night that the baby's head engaged again. Even though I am not overdue yet I am certainly getting impatient.

Mum2b2BabyRoo · 03/04/2008 15:42

Our bumps look very similar Peachy!

scorpio1 · 03/04/2008 16:27

My bump is smaller will try to post one.

Having chippy for dinner - I'm so tired from going out in town today and cannot be arsed to cook.

Mum2b2BabyRoo · 03/04/2008 16:40

We have to drive to Gatwick tonight when DH gets home. My brother has sent a whole lot of stuff for baby with a friend from Dubai and we need to go collect it before the friend flies off again... Was quiet happy to drive there myself this afternoon but DH isn't happy at all with the idea of me driving that far by myself! Mr Paranoid!

bunnyrabbit · 03/04/2008 17:05

Congrats Denny and RainbowDays.
My we are producing chunky LOs aren't we??

DS was 7lb 5oz and am hoping DS2 (there I said it!) will not be a whole lot bigger...

But I only put on 9lb last time and have put on 14lb this time sooooooo... we'll see.

PFJ, Peachy and everyone else who is due.. sending 'head towards the light' vibes to your little ones.

Have asked for a midwife to come over tomorrow (have appt for next Wednesday for sweep which set me off last time) as things just don't seem right. LO is fully engaged and bashing down squirming about (v.painful) and I've lost some mucus, but aso seem to have a yellow discharge (sorry if TMI) and am in some discomfort. This cough doesn't help, but worried I have a UTI and am 39+5.

Really want him to make an appearance now...even made a hot curry last night, although I'm not sure this or pineapple actually works (was 9 days late last time).

I actually like the idea of a nice quick labour after my first time marathon, as long as I make it home in time!!

Still have some raisin fairycakes left and some with sprinkles if anyone is interested.
Off to make DSs dinner.

BR
PS. M2BR that's really sweet! Bless you DH for being so lovely and caring.

bunnyrabbit · 03/04/2008 17:36

Sorry I appear to have bored everyone to death!

bunyanvillas · 03/04/2008 18:29

Hello from ds, born at 11.21pm last night after a 2 hour labour, no time for pain relief! We got back home at noon today and all seems to be ok so far! He was 2.5 weeks early and weighs 6lbs 14oz
