Hello

Changing units not only a waste of cash, tehy're dangerous as well- babies can't fall off the floor after all.

other BIG ahte is baby baths. Either sink with a littlie, or I loved the bath support (just under a tenner in ASda for same plastic moulded model I had last time). Indeed, that's my biggest essential left to buy. FIL's girlfriend's Mum is knittingcardi's, have snowsuit and babygro's, Mum has a steriliser for me (cold water.... steam ones another hate LOL, must write a baby book! Cold water ones you change once and they're ready all day, steam ones should be re-done fifteen minutes or so after each opening- PITA). That's about it now I think.

I still need LOADS of stuff. Is all a bit depressing tbh - can't work out what to get for the best as there are so many conflicting opinions that I dither and get nothing.

What did you mean about the sterilizers? Didn't really understand

Gosh its been busy. All this talk about strippers. How exciting. My poor Dh has found things a bit difficult recently (well over the last 2 years really). What with problems due to being huge, fat and pregnant followed by sheer exhaustion, followed by problems due to breastfeeding, followed by sheer exhaustion and morning (evening) sickness and now problems with hips/pelvis. I think he will be looking for a stripper soon.

We have never had a changing unit and certainly have never missed it.

We are currently looking at double puschairs at the moment. There seem to be no really good ones around so we will keep looking. DS is very stubborn and strong willed and I can not imagine not having a double pushchair.

At the moment I teach a little boy who was born at 23 weeks (his younger twin brothers were also born about then as well!) and have taught a little boy whose sister was born at 23 weeks. It is amazing how babies can survive when born so tiny. The three boys do have problems but the girl is absolutely fine.

I'm with Peachy on the sterilisers. If you open a steriliser that ahs been done byt steam, ie microwave or electric, and take the bottles out, after a certain amount of time the stuff in it is unsterile, apparently.
Whereas witha cold water, you just put it all in and leave it, then swill out whatever you need to use, and change the sterilisng fluid once every 24 hours.

Loris that's interesting- was reading some AIM's backed research recently about Premmie care and related survival rates, and one of the things that struck me was that at pre- 28 weeks deliveries, girls are twice as likely to even survive as boys! (there was no data on disability rates within that).

The main other criteria seemed to be early help, and getting the steroids in on time for babies lungs so always worth remembering, could happen to anyone of us.

my friend had the steriod injection 4 days before Harvey was born at 33 weeks he was breathing alone at birth.

I am a lover of steam sterilisers, i'm afraid. have tried cold water and its just not fast enough! although, yes, they are no longer sterile when you open the lid.

also when making bottles be careful to wash hands and keep worktops clean, etc etc.

Do you do it one day at a time or have longer targets? i dont think i can do it, i think she would need it all the time, that i wouldnt be able to stop her crying, and that i dont see how i can? am i making sense? i have no faith in that part of me to do it. its the only thing with babies that i just dont get.

Oooh Scorpio, I would so recommend trying BF, it's the most wonderful bond, and once you get your head around it it's so damn easy, you can do it anywhere, and no bottles to prepare. Just like with formula, you can get them on to a routine of feeds every 3 to 4 hours when they are past that newborn bit. To me, mixing formula and having to sterilise everything, and get up in the night to make bottles sounds much harder work!

By the way, has anyone chosen names yet? We are really struggling to find a second girl's name we like, after using our favourite with our first. Boys names, I love loads of those! But we're not having a boy!! I want something really unusual, but not too hard to spell/ understand.

Hello all! Happy new year to you girls - have missed you as I somehow lost the thread

Loads to comment on but will go backwards (and forget half of it). I used the steam steriliser and would make the bottles up the minute it stopped i.e. put them back together with teat, ring thing and lid and then assumed that they would stay sterile as they were completely sealed.

I have put on about 1st 1 or 2 and doc said that wasn't very much - and I'm only 24 weeks (late April) so I think you all sound like you need to eat more! Particularly doesn't total gain of 21lb sound low? I thought it was 25-35? People say am mainly bump but I can definitely feel legs and bum fatter and less toned.

Elfsmummy our DCs will be identical ages, almost - I also have DD born April 06 (19th!)

I think I know the (sister of) the girl who had twins from the March thread - was she up in Glasgow and now has to stay there for at least six weeks whilst babies in SCBU? Her sister (if same girl) is just about to go to Oz/NZ for a month or six weeks, was due to be BACK for the birth!

Looked at the name lists and welled up when I saw DD's name (Poppy) - I am such a sap but I'm really missing her now I'm back at work. Her talking has come on no end. We had a friend to stay at the weekend with a 7 month old and she said 'Poppy reading baby story' and started to 'read' Peepo to him - she knows the sounds off by heart, like 'ere ipple baby one two pwee, tada cot, ottee see' - SOOOOO CUTE.

Ellie, please don't worry about incontinence or TMI. I made sure that when I had DD (I was first of my friends to have kids, what a bunch of late starters we are...) I told them all about doing a FULL WEE on the floor trying to pick up P from her moses basket when about four days old - and not even feeling it at all! 'What is this water all over the floor, and my trouser... oh'. That was the impetus I needed to really get cracking on the pelvic floor exercises, although they are very difficult after you've popped! I remember the midwife saying 'just stop your urine mid-flow' and thinking 'yes, all very well in theory...'.

I love Benedict and Sebastian, so much so that just emailed DH as we are going off Walter. I am decided on Isla but he still needs convincing. Definitely swinging towards girl but then I was convinced DD was a boy. Have same (gross) rash on right cheek as did last time and leg hair growing less than usual (more than last time when it stopped completely), but hair still falling out in shower and last time that stopped completely too. Also nausea last time, very little nausea this time, think bump about same size and shape but a bit lower.

oh don't ask me about girls names, it has been a nightmare for me!

and Scorpio - you WILL be able to breastfeed! Don't worry. You have the support of all of us on here. Definitely worth talking to La Leche League or something and/or making sure you have great people to talk to when you are trying. It is hard to begin with but there is no reason you won't be able to do it. Definitely worth talking to people who have had similar misgivings or similar experiences with previous kids and gone on to manage successfully with a later child - maybe start a thread? MN is definitely the place! And like VS said there are loads of (not scarily militant) really helpful bf counsellors etc on here - might be worth seeing if any are near you and could come to your house for an hour after you have Millie. I think sound advice at the beginning is really crucial - it's such a mental/emotional thing and having the right support network to be able to maintain a positive mental attitude through the difficulties is vital, I think. Without meaning to sound patronising, we're all really proud of you for being so determined to try!

LOVE Millie and Scout. You will have to get her a giant ham costume! If there are loads of Millies you could always go for Emilia and call her Millie for short - I think that's really cute. My friend just called her baby Emilia and calls her Emmy but I would definitely go for Millie.

I'm no BF Counsellor Scorpio but I have done the UNICEF breastfeeding course for work, and can help if you need- Just CAt me. You can do it, I managed to BF ds3 until 16 months after abortive efforts with the first 2. Have a few misgivings about BF this one but know I can do it and it is the best thing (esp. as this one has to be dairy and gluten free for first 3 years). Even in the worstc ase scenario, just the colustrum of the first few days is such a benefit to a small baby and you cn just go from there and see how it goes.

a dear friend of mine is a BF counsellor for her job, i may give her a call. she an see me from 28 weeks at home so i will ring her i think.

Oh yes, and on the newborn thing, I have hardly seen any so don't have opportunity to steal them (did anyone see 'My Fake Baby' last night?), but I remember my NCT classes last time and having to keep physically stopping myself from going and grabbing the baby doll she used to demonstrate e.g. fitting out of the pelvis and doing nappies and stuff!

already got it it is MISERABLE. Also totally preventing me from doing any exercise - can anyone think of anything I can do? Walk - no, swim - no...? I am a grumpy git when I don't do exercise (although am naturally lazy and would much rather sit on the sofa). Lucky old DH...

My SPD went Christmas Day when my bump dropped so don'tdespair, not necessarily stuck with it (swimming in December made it much worse though)

mine was manageable over the 'holidays' (we had the outlaws AND my parents to stay) when I literally did no walking whatsoever - sadly can't happen when I have to go to work. Seeing doc next week - might google 'how to getsigned off work with SPD'...
