Does this strep b have any symptoms or signs? How come a few of you are worried about it? I've never heard of it and my midwife has mentioned nothing to me? Should I be concerned and wanting a test? I have my midwife app tomorrow

To add to that I've had both high and low vaginal swabs taken about 3 times in this pregnancy, would it of shown up on those?

APD1981 · 12/05/2020 20:37

@newbyxx apparently they sometimes pick up on it accidentally (if you've had swabs etc for other reasons) but it's not routinely tested for on the NHS. I'm not sure there are definite symptoms as such but it is fairly common to have the infection unknowingly. It can also come and go but in adults it's not dangerous. However in babies, if it's passed on at birth it can lead to meningitis, sepsis, or pneumonia. Risks are quite low but they are certainly there. I only know about it because be best friend tested positive "accidentally" with her first baby so that meant at a certain point in her labour she needed to have antibiotics to protect her baby. I just think for £35 I'd rather know about it than not!

As for 'fanny daggers' oh yes. Lots and lots of time the last week or so and I was told today that baby's head has engaged so that'll be why.

Water birth BMI - in my trust it's over 35 that you can't have a waterbirth. I think it's because if you're too heavy, they won't be able to lift you out in an emergency. My scales at home (which are accurate) put my BMI under that but the clunky old mechanical ones at the surgery put me just above. I'm wondering if I can take a photo of my own scales before my next MW appt and show her to see if that means she'll give me the go ahead. We'll see!

Excited for the first baby announcement imminently. It makes it so real!

I had to take off my rings this morning...my hands are so puffy! And I'm sure they are only going to get bigger!!
