0-1m 10 vests
0-3m 10 vests
0-3m 6 sleepsuits (will get another 6)

Lavellan · 29/04/2019 14:48

I keep looking at clothes and getting totally overwhelmed and walking away with nothing. Hah.

Megan2018 · 29/04/2019 14:54

@Lavellan
Snap. I’m going to leave clothes until last. There is a lot of time to fill!
I have £50 in NEXT vouchers so going to use them to start me off. But hanging on for the next sale to see if any bargains first.
I can’t seem to choose anything else, although I sort of decided to get plain white vests, but they were out of stock at Asda so that made me give up.
I’m picking up a bundle of baby things from an old friend on Sat which includes clothes so I’ll see what thats like. It might inspire me!

boodles101 · 29/04/2019 14:56

hsunshine yes we are going to find out. I would happily wait but we really can't agree on any names. Plus I have loads of DS old clothes that I can get rid of it it's 2 girls.
I would be really surprised if it is 2 girls though as I just don't think they are. I even referred to one as he yesterday by accident!

easterbuns1 · 29/04/2019 15:32

I think I've got all the newborn and 0-3 stuff we need already, mainly preloved hardly worn bargains. Got 3-6 Sleepsuits but won't do outfits til the autumn / winter stuff arrives in the shop. I'm far too organised.

@easterbuns1
How many hats have you got? And cardigans or similar and outer layers for out and about? I have got my head around the sleepsuits and vests quantities but struggling to work out about the other bits.

easterbuns1 · 29/04/2019 16:48

@Megan2018 that's the only thing I haven't got, waiting to see how mad my mother goes with the crochet hook Hmm (but may buy a couple from next or knit my own so I know they will actually match or fit).

Re clothes- I've never had that much, 8 of each (vests (possibly more like 12 vests actually, some short sleeved and some long: 6-8 in the most seasonal and 3-4 of the other) and 8-ish sleepsuits) in 0-3, and just one or two things smaller. My babies are big, and they can always wear big clothes while you get smaller ones.
Then 2-3 hats (1-2 thin cotton, 1-2 woolly for out) and 2-3 cardies, one snowsuit (but never used til much older as I put tinies in a sling inside my coat). I've always been given plenty of hats and cardies! And the rest tbh, if you include handmedowns. I never seem to get much of a chance to buy for my babies!

Hsunshine · 29/04/2019 17:11

Do vests go under sleep suits? Then another top layer like cardigan or coats for going outside?

TwittleBee · 29/04/2019 17:14

Hsunshine really depends on how cold it is! Generally yeah a vest then sleepsuit / outfit. I actually still put DS at 21 months in a vest!

Good way to gauge if they are hot is to feel the back of their neck and if it is hot to touch then they have too many layers. MWs & HVs drummed into us how its more dangerous for a baby to overheat than be a bit chilly.

Megan2018 · 29/04/2019 17:15

@Hsunshine
Yes, I was told to treat vests as the baby’s underwear. So always a vest, then usually a sleepsuit. Then another layer if cold enough indoors (eg cardi) plus an outside layer when out. One more layer than you are wearing as a rule.
I’m getting a groegg for the house to help!

Its so scary!! I’m going to go with short sleeved vests I think and see how we go.

TwittleBee · 29/04/2019 17:16

As for hats, only used hats for DS outside if it was cold - below 10 degrees. As again, our MW & HV said there was no need for hats and can actually overheat them. They made us take the hats off our newborns in hospital!

TwittleBee · 29/04/2019 17:16

Groeggs are great, come with a handy guide! Actually most sleepbags / grobags do too actually so you know if they are okay to sleep etc!

Hsunshine · 29/04/2019 17:25

Having a baby seems more complicated every day!

DustyDoorframes · 29/04/2019 17:29

You can get obsessed with the thermometer though- relaxing into your common sense makes you less crazy (DC2 vs DC1...). One layer more than you and finger down the collar to check will see you right. We tend to keep the house relatively chilly so in winter I've tended to put a cardie over the sleepsuit/vest combo.

TheCraicDealer · 29/04/2019 18:04

DSis's SIL had an obsession with hats- her DS was born in May last year and she had a hat on him all the time, even inside. And you remember what the weather was like last May! If they're cold they'll tell you, whereas if they're overheating chances are they'll doze off.

I said I wouldn't buy anything else til after my 20w scan (two weeks tomorrow) but ended up getting a ditzy print grosnug in Mothercare- my first girly purchase! Paid a bit more off the pram and carseat so "only" have to find another £300 for that and it's paid off.

Have booked a week in France for the start of June so ordered some summer stuff from Boohoo there, they have a sale on. A lot of it's not my bag but there's a few basics in there which are inoffensive and good value.

excitednerves · 29/04/2019 18:14

Oooh great advice on how much baby stuff to get. I have ordered a pack of 10 short sleeve white/animal vests and 6 sleepsuits from George, plus bought a couple of cute romper things for daytime/visitors but that’s it. From this chat, looks like that’s enough for the first few weeks. No doubt I’ll pick up things in the sales too but might go for bigger sizes.

What’s the best thing for a newborn to sleep in? Swaddle? Swaddle/grobag hybrid thing? Sleeping bag?

db92 · 29/04/2019 18:42

Had our 20 weeks scan today (exactly 20 weeks) and was really anxious all day. Was so pleased to see the heart beat right away but baby is very stubborn and just wouldn't get into a good enough position to take all the measurements.

So another trip for us this week!

They were able to tell us we are having a baby boy though Grin

DustyDoorframes · 29/04/2019 18:56

Exciting @db92 ! Yay for all good as far as they could see!

@excitednerves I think swaddles are now not recommend anymore as the baby can overheat as they can't move their arms. I swaddled DC1, but couldn't be bothered with DC2 so she just went into a sleeping bag.

TheCraicDealer · 29/04/2019 19:14

I'm getting a lend of two cosy grosnugs plus the one I just bought (which on reflection I probably don't need but it was so cute!). Apparently they need to be a certain weight before going into the more traditional sleeping bags?

You'll need to research this more as I haven't discounted the fact it may be a canny marketing ploy, but right enough DNeice did rattle around in her 0-6mo one when she was a newborn. It might be due to the potential for them to wiggle down if they're on the small side- the grosnugs are much more fitted.

April88 · 29/04/2019 19:17

I’ve got some cellular blankets for the first few weeks then will put into a sleeping bag after that

Megan2018 · 29/04/2019 19:18

I’m going for grosnugs, 2 cosy, 2 light before sleeping bags. I thought I’d buy one of each new then one of each used as spares. They seem to resell easily.

Megan2018 · 29/04/2019 19:21

How are all the riders getting on? I’m typing this whilst hacking. Bump hurts when I trot tonight. This may be the beginning of the end. Gutted Sad

Moraxella · 29/04/2019 19:39

@megan2018 I get pain under it/about 10cm up from pubic symphysis when I run or walk along distances, feels a bit like a pulled muscle

Whisky2014 · 29/04/2019 19:45

I dont have any clothes yet. Think I'll leave that until a bit further down the line.

Went to the Glasgow baby event. Ended up buying a micralite smartfold which we got the display version of along with carry cot for £350. Bargain. But actually we now Want a different pram so will have to go back and return this and then shop for another one. Think we are leaning towards an icandy peach.
Unsure about buying a cot or cot bed. Both have pros and cons. Got a maxi cosi pebble plus car seat for £143. Think thats also a bargain??
