Hi everyone, just got a bfp this morning after over a year of trying, so excited whilst trying to keep calm as I recently had a mc. This will be my second baby, would love to chat to others who have just found out too!! Xxx

Anyone got any really good excuses for not drinking? Antibiotics line isn’t an option. I have a dinner with my boss and his wife this week and it is normally very boozy, I would never ordinarily turn down a glass of wine so need a great excuse!

Since2016 · 19/06/2018 13:01

@MakeLemonade I have a similar dilemma. Have a v boozy 40th next week. IMO the antibiotics line is as good as saying I'm duffed up.

Things I'm considering:

  1. I'm on a v boring health kick
  2. A resting bitch face - I'm taking meds that aren't compatible with alcohol (if pushed for a reason)
  3. I'm super hungover - sorry!

I've not been drinking for the past 7 weeks so makes it easier as some people know that already.

Any other ideas?

Rowse · 19/06/2018 13:53

@Since2016 and @MakeLemonade I know the antibiotics excuse isn't an option, so my suggestion doesn't really help, but I can't think of anything else!
When I had a gum infection I was prescribed

metronidazole which is an antibiotic but one where it is really dangerous to drink when you take it.
I haven't needed an excuse yet but think I might say I'm taking it for a gum infection if I need to.

Hope someone can come up with something more helpful!

emoji · 19/06/2018 15:09

Oh god @Rowse I've had alcohol by mistake with metronidazole (completely forgot I was taking medication) and I was SO sick from one very small glass of g&t I honestly thought I was dying 🙈

As regards to no drinking could you accept a glass of wine and then nurse that throughout the meal/party?

Or just say you've got a blood test the following morning or GP appt for something and you're not allowed to drink beforehand.

Since2016 · 19/06/2018 15:34

@Rowse this is very good!!!! Maybe I can use this excuse twice (once for work and once for next week) and say I've had an abcess?

Ok maybe the antibiotics excuse not so useless!!

SpringfieldMummy · 19/06/2018 16:18

Can you drink "sprits" instead and then just have lemonade?

If you're out for dinner at a restaurant, phone ahead and explain the situation so you can order a g&t at the table and then they know to just bring the t!

I'm at a bbq on Saturday so I'm emptying a gin bottle and filling it with water. DH and best friend know so they can also pour me drinks, and I'll just have to hope no one else helps themselves to it and twigs!

I'm at a works do tomorrow though so am recruiting a team mate as a wing woman as there's no way I'll be able to pull off the soft drink trick on my own. I'm more relaxed about people knowing this time, especially since I've shared with quite a few people about having had a miscarriage in the past (but didn't at the time)

MakeLemonade · 19/06/2018 16:57

The challenge with pretending is that it’s a small dinner - just four of us, so no way to surreptitiously order soft drinks and it’s really expensive so can’t bear the thought of him paying £16 for a plain tonic Grin

The appointment the next morning thing could work though... I like that.

I’ve had an allergic reaction to metronidazole before which he knows and is why it won’t wash!

It’s at times like this I wish I wasn’t such a boozer normally, definitely can’t pull off nursing one wine all evening or pretending I’m on a detox!

OpenThatTrapDoor · 19/06/2018 17:38

I’m a runner so my excuse is “I have a long run in the morning so not drinking” - seems to work generally!
Pretty sure I’ve been sussed at work though as I’ve turned down coffee multiple times now, not like me!

MrsY87 · 19/06/2018 17:39

I'm known for liking a glass of wine too and every time I'm pregnant I wish I wasn't! I went to a summer fair thing with one of my best friends the day after we found out I was pregnant and she was like...ooohh let's have pimms! The moment I said no I'm ok she gave me that knowing look so I had to come clean!

UTI is also a good excuse as people don't normally ask more. Or could you come up with a reason to postpone the dinner for a few weeks?

MrsY87 · 19/06/2018 17:40

Just re-read what I wrote! Obviously I mean wish I wasn't known for liking a glass of wine not being pregnant! 🤦‍♀️

furandchandeliers · 19/06/2018 17:44

Do people really not drink anything? Not a drop?

I've never been a big drinker unless it's a special occasion so I don't miss alcohol at all but if there was an occasion where a glass of pimms or a champagne was in the cards I'd have one! Not going to do any harm at all!

Since2016 · 19/06/2018 17:45

Agh I agree re the liking a drink - sooo hard to pretend when you're generally renowned 😳

I'm going to try the antibiotic one - I'm way too nervous to tell people - it's still super early for me, and I definitely do not want to let on to work - it was deeply unpleasant last time (I hadn't been there v long) and while I'm sure it'll be different this time I would rather not let on till as late as possible.

Since2016 · 19/06/2018 17:46

@furandchandeliers I think it's a deeply personal decision. While I totally agree that the odd glass isn't going to do any harm I found it easier first time round not to drink anything, although I was pregnant at Christmas (looks like this time will be the same!) so had one then. Each to their own I think.

lanalawr · 19/06/2018 18:18

I have the same alcohol issue for the next couple of nights. I'm away with work and while I don't drink a lot I would usually have a couple of glasses. Not entirely sure how to hide it while we're here. I'm choosing not to drink (I can't stand the smell either) so may accept one glass but not drink it.

Xstaryx · 19/06/2018 18:35

Hi everyone :) this is my first time posting so please be gentle haha! I had my BFP last Friday Smile i'm currently 7 weeks going off LMP which was 2nd May. This is my first pregnancy and I'm so nervous and worried! I feel like i spend every day worrying something is going to go wrong. We've been trying since January and got married 6 weeks ago and i think its just that dread of "what ifs" that i need to get out my head! I have my first midwifes appointment on 3rd July I've never looked forward to something so much haha!

jeanzbeanz · 19/06/2018 18:35

I carried on drinking initially, just one or two glasses of wine per weekend. Can't bear the thought of it now. Although occasionally I pinch a mouthful of DH's G&T and thoroughly enjoy it, which is weird as I have never been a fan of gin!

Since2016 · 19/06/2018 19:09

Welcome @Xstaryx - we're all in the same boat and even if you've been pregnant before it's no less nerve wracking the next time round! Welcome!

Xstaryx · 19/06/2018 19:24

I'm so glad it's not just me! I feel like i have a little countdown to my midwife appointment just to feel safer! 2 weeks feels like forever and a day!

MrsY87 · 19/06/2018 19:32

I went out and got smashed and then to a wine tasting lunch just before my BFP but haven't had anything since as I don't fancy it. I'll probably have a glass or two over the next 8m though like I have in my previous pregnancies but normally not til after my 20w scan.

Koalatom1 · 19/06/2018 19:32

Righto I’ve set up the fb group and so if anyone wants to join then pm me and I’ll add you as a friend and then add you to the group!

Sickness is terrible today. Was meant to go out for dinner but I just can’t face it. So my inlaws have gone out (on hokiday with them) and my and the husband are going to watch Netflix!

Xstaryx · 19/06/2018 19:43

I've given you a pm i would love to join the group

SpringfieldMummy · 19/06/2018 19:46

I drank up til the night before I got my bfp, people would be suspicious and there wasn't anything to necessarily be suspicious about!

Plus if I was only just getting the hormone to say it's embedded, how does the alcohol actually get to it at that point?

I allowed myself 1 glass of wine a week when I was preg last time, and probably had about 2/3rds of them, mainly as occasion drinking. Actually quite looking forward to putting a lid on it for a while again, it's been slowly creeping up!

SpringfieldMummy · 19/06/2018 19:47

I'm going to give it another few weeks if you don't mind @Koalatom1, easier to extract myself from an anonymous forum if things don't go to plan. But thank you for setting it up x

Since2016 · 19/06/2018 20:42

@Xstaryx I've not even referred in yet! Too nervous! Only just over 4 weeks so super early days for me. Waiting till next week to refer in. I'm literally counting the weeks to the scan/14 week point.

@SpringfieldMummy agree thank you @Koalatom1 for setting up but as I don't do Facebook anyway and I'm at the tail end of the group Id rather hang on a little bit longer. Terrified it's too good to be true.

My sickness has abated now just constantly peeing - constantly! Sickness kicked in last time at around 8 weeks so going to enjoy the next 3 weeks of relative normality!
