greedygreedyguzzler · 10/05/2007 12:29

how does this hypnobirthing thing work then?

KezzaG · 10/05/2007 12:36

Its the Mile for Maud in Romford. Im dragging dh and ds along with me.

Not sure how it actually works, you learn techniques to keep calm and handle the pain and generally help your body do its thing. First session not until July. If we do see each other in hospital i may not be able to speak, I may be so calm and in touch with inner self I will be incommunicado.

Or, I will be screeching for an epidural and cursing Paul McKenna and all his evil minions

greedygreedyguzzler · 10/05/2007 13:11

so have you been hypnotised before for other things? was your first birth experience ok or not? i have a feeling you have some horribly traumatic story!

betsycoe · 10/05/2007 13:20

Thanks Gemma and Greedy,
hopefully DH will get the all clear as his family are Irish (as are mine but I suppose there must be some relatives from further afield somewhere down the line).

KezzaG · 10/05/2007 13:35

betsycoe, I just found the leaflet I was given by the MW at my booking in apt about sickle cell & thalassaemia, as it a new test now offered.

screeningl link

this is the link from the leaflet. There is more info in the booklet but it would take me ages to type it. If there was anything in particular you wanted to know let me know and I will see if it is covered.

This is important though, even if you and the babys father both carry the gene, for each baby you have there is:

one in four chance baby will not be affected
two in four chance baby will be a carrier
one in four chance baby will have a disorder

so even if you both have the gene its not neccessarily bad news.

greedy, not a bad birth as such but I have a bit of family history that makes me very nervous. My mum lost a baby who got stuck in the birth cancel, she then went onto have a section next time. Also my sister, 2 aunts, and counsin all had long labours resulting in sections, and I too had a section. This has left me really scared of the whole birth process and convinced I cannot do it, and that I come from a familt of birthing incompetents!. Hypno birthing is supposed to help with this kind of fear and make the whole process less stressful.

I have been hypnotised for my spider phobia and titally cured so I am totally convinced these things can work......we will see.

If we dont meet before, lets definatley meet while on mat leave.

greedygreedyguzzler · 10/05/2007 13:47

sounds good! i have a spider phobia too! and it is starting to rub off on my ds and dd so i should really get it sorted. might have to try this hypnotising thing. are you seeing the same person for your hypnobirthing? it sounds great to me as i truly believe that giving birth successfully depends a lot on how you feel psychologically. if you believe you can do it, you will!

i guess you will find out in 20 wks!!!!!!!

KezzaG · 10/05/2007 13:51

I did my spider course at London Zoo. It is a day course and at the end of it you catch a house spider in a jar and carry it around and then hold a tarantula. honestly was the most scary thing ever, the morning I went I felt like I couldnt breath properly and at the end of the day I lost my voice, purely down to stress. When it came to holding the spiders thoigh it was easy peasy and I can now either leave them if they are meduim/small or catch them and put them outside of they are big. Changed my life it did, you should deffo do it if you dont want your dc's to be scared.

alicet · 10/05/2007 14:49

Hello all and thanks for your welcomes!

Thanks to ejt1764 for the helpful tips. Sex not likely to be a factor at the moment - does anyone else with a toddler manage anything resemmbling a normal sex life??!?! If so I'm jealous! Rest is definately working for me though - only had a couple of really mild ones in the last 2 days.

Good (for me anyway!) to hear some of the rest of you are getting bh's too as that reassures me that it's not anything scary. gemmamc yes tightenings are when you feel your tummy going hard. This is all I had in the way of bh's last time - no discomfort at all. Still its not so bad when i know its probably nothing serious....

jersey - hello not met before. Saw some mention to you thinking about having a section but obviously don't know your background. If it helps I had an emergency section with my son and had a really straightforward recovery. Much easier and less painful than I expected and my mate who had a planned section was up and driving and totally back to normal in 3 weeks. Of course if you've had one yourself already you may well know this! I'm currently having the vbac v section debate and am totally undecided....

Cars - we have a vauxhall zafira and its great. Despite being pretty big its actually pretty easy to drive - better than the other buses we tried out anyway. The boot is enormous and you can set it up for 7 seats if you like (although this sacrifices a lot of the boot). Not sure would fit 3 carseats on back seat though as middle seat only has a lapbelt but you can put them on the extra 2 seats in the boot if you need.

Mumpbump · 10/05/2007 14:52

Very quick post today as work is continuing to distract me from Mumsnet... Is anyone else feeling nervous about their 20/22 week scan? Not sure if it's because of my previous m/c's, but feeling a bit worried that there might be something wrong...

alicet · 10/05/2007 15:10

I am yes especially after my bh's and all the worry with that this week. I think you can't really help it can you. Last time I wasn't so anxious as it all felt a bit surreal but now I know what its like to have a baby it makes it all so much more real.

On a less important note - is anyone else going to find out the sex of their baby? We did last time and that made him feel so much more real afterwards. Will be gutted if they can't see this time!!!!

honeyapple · 10/05/2007 15:35

Greedy-

Yes, fab news about MrsMcJ .

We decided to scrap the Croatia idea... mainly due to few sandy beaches, but also I got kind of cold feet after getting BFP about going somewhere different... not sure why.... I wouldnt mind going there now... but a few weeks ago I was worrying about everything!
So we have booked an overnight ferry with porthole cabin to St. Malo in Brittany (taking the car) will have 2 nts hotel in St. Malo, then a gite for a week. I hope it will be stress-free and relaxing. I love France, but don't know Brittany- went there as a child only. Are you having a summer hol? Or was St Lucia your one for the year?
