Kittiwake- re Picasso- we have a diesel- bit of a roar... sounds like a tank sometimes! But defo agree with them being good price. I dont think they are too much of a family car... I still feel kind of cool driving it... I mean... not too old and decrepid or destined for misery with screaming kids and snot all over me...

Oh and yes... definatley some sweets and crisps somewhere....

alicet · 09/05/2007 12:02

Hi all October mummies - not been on here before and hope you can help! Posted a separate message about this already but was advised by kittiwake to post here too as apparently one of you has been having the same problem. Plus great to chat to people due at the same time anyway!

I am due to have my second baby on 9th October (am 18 weeks pregnant). My son was born in Feb 2006 by emergency section for foetal distress. Anyway for the last 3 hours I have been having intermittent cramps associated with tightenings of my uterus that last about 30 seconds. Think these are probably like braxton hicks but although I had these with my first pregnancy it wasn't until much later (about 28 weeks) and they weren't associated with the discomfort. I spoke to my midwife yesterday who said they were probably bh's but that she couldn't rule out early labour and that I should rest and give the hospital a call if they got more frequent or worse. After resting yesterday they have settled and I have only had one since mid am yesterday. Saw my GP this am who confirmed what the midwife said and has signed me off work for a week to rest (although not easy with a toddler!) He says that if they settle into a pattern its less likely to be anything worrying as long as I don't have any other symptoms.

Has anyone else had the same and if so I'd be really interested to hear what advice you were given and what you did about it....

Cheers, Alice

Mumpbump · 09/05/2007 12:06

Congratulations and welcome Alicet! My ds was born in Feb 2006 as well and I agree it is very hard work being pg with a toddler!

I did have a some intermittent cramping that was quite painful one morning a few weeks ago that settled down and has not come back. But I never had BH in my first pg so no idea how early they can start... Sorry I can't help more.

alicet · 09/05/2007 12:18

Thanks mumpbump for reassuring me when you're busy at work! The more I chat to mates and stuff the more reassured I am that its nothing but think best to rest when I can and cross my fingers... But the more reassurance the better...

I had a Quinny Buzz for my son which can face you and face away which I have found fantastic. It has developed an annoying squeak which seems to be a fairly common problem but other than that its fantastic - its great to be able to chat to him when we're out and its really easy to manouvere too. You can get a carrycot to use in the first 6 months (pushchair would be too big till then) plus maxi cosi carseats fit onto it as well which I found really useful. Could use this instead of the carrycot if you didn't plan to be out too long at a time. Not the smallest pushchair in the world but I have a zafira so it wasn't a problem. One of my mates has a more normal sized car though and she managed fine.

Can get it significantly cheaper than rrp by shopping round on the net - i got it from somewhere called twoleftfeet.

Hope that helps!

honeyapple · 09/05/2007 12:31

Hi alicet,

There is a stats thread somewhere to add your EDD etc..

Ejt1764 had the same thing with the cramps... have a look down the thread...

Hope they calm down and are nothing to worry about.

I am looking for a new pram/buggy... have had a look at Quinny buzz but thought it a bit big... need to have a go with one in real life rather than just surfing the net!

alicet · 09/05/2007 13:32

Couldn't find stats thread. So here is a bit about me...

34 (today!), have one son 15 months old and due my second on 9th Oct. 12 week scan all good (only 1 baby!!!!) and due my 20 week one on 21st May. Not sure what else you want to know but happy to answer any questions!

Yes the Buzz isn't the smallest pushchair on the planet but its really easy to steer and I feel has a lot more going for it. Agreed too that better to check it in person rather than online as that can be misleading.

ANyone got any tips for a good twin pushchair? The ones I like the look of are mountain buggy urban (like carrycot which can face me plus narrow and easy to get about) but v expensive, first wheels (like the facing me thing) but seems on brief look in mothercare to be a bit flimsy and wide, and phil & teds sport but worry its a bit rubbish for the kiddie sitting underneath and seats don't recline much.... ANyone got experience of any of these or others?

Mumpbump · 09/05/2007 13:35

Here you go, Alice

stats

I have a Phil and Ted's which a friend gave me. It is very cumbersome so I never used it with ds, but and am thinking of using it when there are two. However, I have heard a few people say it's not much good for the child at the back which has to be the older child. Also, not sure how long it will be suitable for ds since he will be 20 months old when no. 2 arrives. I am thinking of getting a double buggy that is side by side, but later on as I will carry no. 2 in a sling for the first few months...

ejt1764 · 09/05/2007 17:59

Evening all,
Back in work today - dephead was her usual charming self, and after reducing me to tears (yes, again) we agreed that I should have a bit more flexibility (well, as much as you can have whilst working in a school!). Basically, if I have a free lesson for lesson 1 or 5, then I'll not be at work ... hopefully that will allow me to get a bit more rest!

Alice - welcome to the irritable uterus club! I have also been told by the midwives at the hospital when I went in yesterday (had had full blown contractions on Monday night - fun!) to take it easy ... so of course I went back to work today!
Here are the things that I've found out can cause early bh / tightenings ....
*infection - this is most common apparently - it can happen if you've got a bladder infection / stomach bug, as the area gets all lary.
*dehydration - don't know why, but it apparently can make the tightenings much worse.
*stress - again, upsets the area
*sex - the prostoglandins in sperm can make you have (non-productive) contractions, even at this early stage - they suggest that if you are prone to painful contractions early on to use condoms when you have sex (and there's me thinking I'd left the buggers behind for a bit!!! )
*law of sod - this is why I've been having them! I've been told that I may now have them on and off until I give birth - baby due 2nd October

Will post more in a bit - dh calling me to eat a lovingly prepared dinner!

ejt1764 · 09/05/2007 18:49

Continued ... dinner was lovely! dh had cooked chicken curry & rice - yum!

Jersey - you have my deepest sympathy with the sciatica - is there any chance of you getting a physio referral for it?

Can't remember who was talking about weight gain - I have so far gained 17lbs - but I haven't actually put any on in the past 4 weeks - since I've been able to stop eating all the flamin time to stop myself puking, I've been a lot more controlled. Mind you, I'm not that bothered - I've lost it once - I can certainly do it again!

As for the pram / buggy issue, we have a cosatto with carry cot / car seat that we bought with ds ... the car seat bit fits straight onto the wheels, which is handy, but I hate the carrycot / pushchair bit - but I can't really justify the outlay to buy a new one when the one we have is perfectly servicable! Mind you, we used the pram for less than 6 months with ds, then went for buggy - I went through about 3 - we did a lot of walking!
The last one I bought is a mamas & papas one, which is actually suitable from birth - and it was absolutely fantastic. Can't remember what type it is, but it's been fantastic - unlike the Mclaren volo I had - I went through 2 of them in 6 months, as the wheels kept disintegrating!
A point to bear in mind for the first timers is that the lasy in the shop when we bought the pram told me that I'd buy a buggy within 6 months - and I didn't believe - if I had it would have saved me a lot of money!

Now to cars - we have 2 - an 8 year old 206 (diesel) which I drive most of the time - even with ds as he can come in the front as there's no passenger airbag. Fuel consumption on that is very low. We also have a Xsara Picasso - a petrol one as we couldn't afford a diesel at the time - I so wish that we'd gone the extra to buy a diesel one as it's really thirsty if you're only driving around town. The Picasso is great in terms of boot space though, but I find it too big (hence why I bagsy the 206 if I get the chance!) - I also call it the 'mummy bus' ... and you can get 3 car seats across the back seat - always useful to know!

Right - off to shower and go to bed ...

buffythenappyslayer21 · 09/05/2007 19:48

hi evryone.

ejt-glad to her everything is ok.can completely sympathise with you.with all my pregnancies ive had cntractions early, and was told the same,i had an irritable uterus.with my 1st 3,my waters went at 30 weeks,so was on steroids and bed rest until each one arrived.had same probs with my last 2 [regnancies, but uckily my waters didnt go early, but was in and out with contractions.sorry to be down about it,but its what happens unfortunately.just hoping this time that things dont start up again and that i have a trouble free pregnancy!

jersey-i asked for a scetion this time when i first saw my gp,but she said she didnt think consultant would agree.when i saw consultant she offered one to me!said it is my decision, but i was so gobsmacked i said i didnt know what i wanted!(i begged her for one last time and she said no-ended up having very bad labour with dd and tats why iwant a section this time).im going to have a section this time,i think its the best thing for me because my last labour was so awful i have nightmares about it!but if i was you,id say go with whatever feels best for you.you need to weigh up the pros and cons of section vs vbac (recovery time etc) and think about what you want tp do,not what the hospital want you to do.

anyway,hope everyones ok!!

greedygreedyguzzler · 09/05/2007 20:11

alicet - i have been getting bhs for the past week too. i really notice them when i am rushing around or walking fast to get my ds to nursery and pushing buggy with dd in at the same time. i had them with both my previous pgs but only after about 30 wks, so i was very surprised to start getting them so early this time round. my bump is much bigger much quicker this time and i wondered if that was why i could feel them so early on. dont know, but dont like it much! kind of makes me slow down a bit though and remember that i am pg!

hello everyone else!!

we have just bought a hyundai santa fe as our new 'family fit 3 car seats in the back' car! it has 7 seats and a DVD player! its great!!!

greedygreedyguzzler · 09/05/2007 20:15

didnt really realise there was such a thing as an irritable uterus!!! maybe mine is a bit narky too then!!! sex DEFINATELY makes mine contract, but thats just the whole orgasm thing isn't it? i remember getting my dh to feel how rock hard my tummy was every time we had sex last pg cos it amazed me so much! (not used to having a hard tummy, soft and squidgy is more the norm for me!!)

greedygreedyguzzler · 09/05/2007 20:16

buffy - all your pgs sound so traumatic! i am amazed you keep coming back for morE!!!

PolarMummy · 09/05/2007 20:59

ejt1764 glad you had a nice tea, I think it always tastes nicer when someone else cooks it

As for the Pram/buggy dilemma, I would be quite happy to buy a pram for when the baby is born and wait for a couple of months to buy a buggy the problem I am finding is that no one seems to sell the prams separately any more. So if you know of somewhere I can buy just the carrycot and wheels PLEASE let me know as this would solve all my problems (well my pram/buggy related ones anyway )

gemmamc · 10/05/2007 08:48

Hello everyone. Interesting discussion about bh cramps.

I have been feeling some mild cramps lately, but I have no idea if they are bh. They felt more like mild menstrual cramps I've been having from the beginning, but a bit worse than usual.

Given the description, I guess they might be bh. Not sure what people mean by "tightening" but I did notice my tummy was quite hard - is that what you mean?

I am seeing the GP anyway in an hour because I also think I may have a mild bladder infection and perhaps also thrush at the same time (lovely! sorry if TMI). Interesting to hear contractions or cramps might be due to infections...

I also noticed I felt better yesterday once I stopped working and relaxed a bit (I was trying to meet a deadline and I realised I was very tense) and it got even better after I took an afternoon nap (wonders of home working).

hmmm. Good I am getting this checked. I'll keep you posted.

Apricott · 10/05/2007 10:16

Morning all

Sorry to hear of all your aches and pains and other pregnancy woes. So far, my only pain has been in the groin - had the same last time, but not until much later - it's actually making walking quite painful at times; already!

Thought I'd throw a new one into the equation, though. Is anyone else suffering from itchy dry skin? I've developed patches on my back that are driving me crazy. I'm pretty sure they're pg related. Sound familiar?

Bloody, damn computer (she says in a workman blaming his tools type way). Sorry I keep posting everythign twice. I WILL get the hang of this!

gemmamc · 10/05/2007 10:46

Hi Apricott,
I've been getting itching too. Mainly in my legs - but I have had this problem in the past anyway. I know pregnancy can cause changes in the skin, so I am assuming that's what it is. I think we don't need to worry unless the itching gets really severe....but I'll let others, with more experience, say what they think too.

It is much better now that I am using Aqueous Cream - a really good product for dry skin conditions that you can get over the counter. Might be worth mentioning to GP in any case if it continues...

I've just been to the GP, and he tested my urine. No bladder infection - which is good. He thinks the thrush might explain some of the other symptoms, so now I have to take pessary and cream for a week, and if other symptoms don't get better I need to go back.

If I get more strange discomfort/cramps I might call the midwifes, though....but hopefully they won't.

OK - back to work now!! All this stuff yesterday and today meant I might miss a crucial deadline....

greedygreedyguzzler · 10/05/2007 11:03

can i trade some of my oily spotty skin for your dry skin please??? then we might both get the right balance and have beautiful clear skin!

betsycoe · 10/05/2007 11:40

Hi,
just had a call from the hospital to say that my husband needs to go for tests as I am a carrier of sickle cell and Thallasemia (SP?). Does anyone know what this means?

gemmamc · 10/05/2007 11:53

I am not an expert, but I do know they are both inherited conditions which are actually very very common in places like the Mediterranean and parts of Africa, and most times causes no problems.

In Italy, where I am from, being a carrier of thalassemia is very common (sometimes called Mediterranean anaemia). It is actually something some people have developed over millennia as a protection against malaria. My SIL is a carrier of thalassemia and had two healthy children.

I think it can potentially cause some problems if both parents carry it, which is why they are testing your dh.

I still have a looming deadline, so I can't do an internet search, but I am sure you'll find lots of information online. Don't get yourself too worried though, because remember it's a very common thing in some parts of the world and as long as you're a carrier rather than actually having the illness, it's properly diagnosed and well managed, it should not be a huge problem.

greedygreedyguzzler · 10/05/2007 11:55

this should help

bascically these disorders are both recessive disorders, so your baby can only be affected if you and your dh are carriers. as long as he isn't a carrier the baby will be fine. if he is a carrier for sickle cell then i think the chances of your baby it are 1 in 4. if he is a carrier for thalassemia the chances of your abby getting it are quite high.

sorry to hear this, its not what you need is it. but i should think it is very unlikely that your dh is a carrier too, so all should be fine.

honeyapple · 10/05/2007 12:08

Hi all,

Betsy- hope your DH is not a carrier. Is he of mediteranean or African heritage? Sickle Cell can make kids very ill, it usually affects boys... dont know too much about the other one.

I saw my MW yesterday- and a student MW- who blew my arm up failing to take my BP- poor thing, I had to stop her as I thought my arm was going to explode! Also she spent about 5 mins failing to find baby HB... only for Maureen to find it in 2 seconds. It must be SO hard being a student in any medical environment.
Anyway- thats it dont see MW until 28 wks... have had to change my scan date as DP couldnt make the first one. He asked whether it mattered if he came or not . I said if he wanted to find the sex, I would only ask if he was there! I will update the scan list.
I am going on holiday when I wil be 26 wks- get back when I am 28wks... dunno whether to make MW appointment for before I go away, just in case?? What u reckon?

honeyapple · 10/05/2007 12:11

Thought I'd refresh the list with just the upcoming scans...
