I’ve just done a bit of googling and the nuchal Scan (which is what it says i’m having on the letter) needs to be done before 14 weeks. I’m going to phone the midwife tomorrow.

SmashyCup · 03/01/2018 22:41

@Hettyturnip I think lots of hospitals are behind because of Christmas. I've been having to chase mine up for a scan appointment too. The NHS is very poor in comparison to other countries for only offer two scans during most pregnancies, let alone being late with them as well. Hmm

agteacht · 03/01/2018 23:23

Hi all, I wondered if people have been having early scans privately? I didn't realise this was a thing to do but I'm 6 weeks tomorrow and thinking waiting 6 more for the NHS one sounds a LONG time. What have you guys done?
Thanks

SmashyCup · 03/01/2018 23:29

I think some people get an extra early scan due to higher risks or fertity treatment. But you can get private ones. I'm thinking of getting the Harmony Test because it's much more accurate than the NHS screening tests, and it usually comes in a package with extra scans. And a conclusive test for the sex if you want that as well!

YouCantBeSirius · 04/01/2018 00:18

I'm 10 weeks today. I have my booking appointment on Monday so I'll hopefully get a date for my scan then and probably an appointment for when I'm around 16 weeks.

StrawberryLemonade · 04/01/2018 05:42

agteacht I eventually decided to have an early scan last week at 8 weeks. Pleased I did I think it was worth the money. I know it doesn’t guarantee anything but at least it reassured me I’m not feeling ill for no reason!

WaitingforToto · 04/01/2018 06:54

I’m having a private scan on Sunday @agteacht it’s my first pregnancy so just want someone to say ‘so far, so good’ to put my mind at ease for now. I’ll be 7+4 by then, the clinic I’m going to won’t do it before 7 weeks as you’re less likely to see a heartbeat then. I’ll let you know if it’s worth the £80 when I’ve been.

misshannah · 04/01/2018 07:55

@agteacht I wasn't going to have an early scan, but a scare earlier in the week made me feel like I really wanted some reassurance, so have booked in for a private scan next week. Also, 12 weeks is AGES to wait!

My clinic won't do scans before 7 weeks, i'll just be 7+2 when i go.

I've then got my booking appointment the following week.

Gizzymum · 04/01/2018 07:59

@agteacht I didn't have an early scan for DC1, but as we are doing harmony testing this time we will get a scan with it (they have to make sure you're far along enough for the harmony test to work). I'll be 10w at the scan.

For early scans it's prob worth a google about what stage they do internal vs external scans. Personally I'd wait the extra week or so for the external. 😳

butterfly86 · 04/01/2018 09:02

Does anyone know how ill you have to be to get Meds for the sickness? I feel on the brink of throwing up constantly and yesterday I was sick in the morning then late last night I brought everything I'd eaten back up...Sorry tmi! In my last pregnancy I was sick at least 4 times a day until 22 weeks but I just put up with it, I'm not sure I can this time now I have dd to look after and not sure how I'm going to hide it when I'm back to work?

Babydreaming · 04/01/2018 09:02

I was just talking to my mum about early scans. She’s not a doctor but works in the pharmaceutical industry in medical imaging. She’s scared me a bit!! She said that personally she wouldn’t expose the baby to any unnecessary ultrasound waves so early on. What do you guys think of this? I know ultrasound is meant to be safe?

OP posts:
SmashyCup · 04/01/2018 09:15

@butterfly86 if ylu are struggling your GP should prescribe something.

@Babydreaming that's interesting. What extra risks does increased ultrasound wave exposure pose, did she say?

Babydreaming · 04/01/2018 09:26

@smashycup she doesn’t really know what she’s talking about but just said that ultrasound does have some effects e.g heats tissues so she wouldn’t personally want to do anything unnecessary when the cells are all developing still.

Hi Ladies,
I'm having an early scan as I'm still just so apprehensive, was awake at 5am worrying that something was wrong and I'm just basically counting down the days. I didn't used to be so crazy - infertility has made me a bit Hmm

I'll be 7+3 by LMP at the date of the scan but I think I'm further on than that as I feel pregnant during a medicated cycle and I was getting scans etc.

Sorry to hear about those really struggling with sickness. I was sick yesterday and this morning but nothing too bad, I find the nausea harder to deal with but at the same time, its reassuring!

peterpanwendy · 04/01/2018 10:43

Had my booking appt with the midwife today at 8+5, she was so nice and reassuring. I am still feeling so rotten though, need something to take the edge off this nausea 😭

peterpanwendy · 04/01/2018 10:45

@Gizzymum the private scans clinic by me do internal before 8 weeks 😦

Emmasmum2013 · 04/01/2018 10:50

@Babydreaming - ultrasound is just sound. Its perfectly safe. Its not like you're having an xray and getting a dose of radiation each time.

Emmasmum2013 · 04/01/2018 10:58

Does anyone have any recommendations for good pregnancy products? I'm always on the hunt for something that's good value for money and is tried and tested by other pregnant ladies.
My recommendations for today are:

Nivea in shower body moisturiser - its kind of like a conditioner for your skin. I hold this product solely responsible for my lack of stretchmarks from DD. Its so quick and easy, and really does leave your skin nice and soft. I didn't like using bio oil as it was just too greasy for me. I think its on offer in the shops at the moment. Stock up!

New Look overbump skinny jeans. I'm actually looking forwards to buying a pair of these again. They were the most comfortable maternity jeans I owned. Just buy them in your normal size. I gave mine to a friend who was pregnant after I'd given birth and she loved them too!

amzq87 · 04/01/2018 11:06

@Babydreaming I had heard this before a couple of years ago when my friend was pregnant. Just did a quick google and found this:

www.nhs.uk/news/pregnancy-and-child/warning-over-souvenir-baby-scans/

But it doesn't say there is any evidence as such, just that things like 3D scans that need prolonged exposure may introduce risk factors for developing nervous systems.

amzq87 · 04/01/2018 11:08

Thanks for the recommendations @Emmasmum2013 - will have a trip to new look. Currently using a soap and glory righteous body butter shower cream that seems to be moisturising just nicely but I'll try the Nivea one :-)

Emmasmum2013 · 04/01/2018 11:17

Oooh amzq87 I've never seen the Soap and Glory one.. there stuff smells lovely as well. I'll have to check that one out!

LadesC · 04/01/2018 12:26

US does have some heating effects and as its a relatively new technology then i guess we dont know if any detrimental effects will be found in future. (Im a sonographer). But ive already had 2 scans this preg and am not concerned. The machines have thermal indices to keep an eye on to ensure they within an ok range.

BertieBotts · 04/01/2018 12:31

It's funny, I only hear this worry over ultrasound imaging in the UK, other places seem to have no problem with it, especially Germany, which would be surprising if it was risky. Germans seem very over cautious, if I was working in a nursery with under 3s they'd have me off work already for example due to some illness in the herpes family I'd never even heard of before! I've also had a blood test for toxoplasmosis whereas other places just say to avoid toxo triggers.

Stephiewoo · 04/01/2018 12:45

@milney25 did the spotting ease last night? Hope you're feeling ok today x

milney25 · 04/01/2018 12:55

Ah thanks for checking in @Stephiewoo. It did ease to a lot lighter, darker spotting. I'm fully expecting it to return this evening though! Taking comfort from a strong heartbeat yesterday and growth bang on schedule!
