maybe

I've just passed my driving test too! About the same time as you. I haven't driven since Blush.

ElleMcElle · 23/08/2017 09:53

@maybe - I'm hoping to learn to drive before baby comes but I'm also terrified. Absolutely hate it. Well done for passing - at least if you really need to drive for some reason, you have the option now!

peachgreen · 23/08/2017 10:00

@Decaffstilltastesweird My hair is ATROCIOUS. Dry, fluffy and MASSES OF IT. Although I have found that oiling my hair after towel-drying has really helped.

Congrats to both you and @Maybebaby2 on passing your driving tests! I haven't passed mine either and I'm really starting to panic about needing to learn before the baby comes. But dreading it so much!

My bump has really popped out the last few days (18+3). My physio had to treat me on my side and DH said that yesterday was the first time he'd looked at me and SEEN me as pregnant rather than just knowing I am!

reetgood · 23/08/2017 10:09

@maybebaby2 loads of sympathy re driving. I qualified late, when I was 35 and as I don't need to drive everyday it took me a really long time to feel comfortable. But I've been surprised by pregnancy really placing the anxiety (for me about other things) near the surface. It's just a bit more in your face than usual. So reassure yourself you might just have hormones amplifying this, there's nothing 'wrong' with you.

What everyone says is true, it's all about getting the miles and time in. Some things that I found helpful:

  • taking familiar roads at first, and looking at my route before I drove to places
  • picking destinations I wanted to go to - I'm not really one for driving for the sake of it so I'd run errands, go to places that took me ages on public transport. This helped me appreciate driving.
  • having car radio on with low key music. Not even stuff I choose myself, just safe familiar noise
  • sat nav on, particularly for multi lane change type situations. Very familiar as like having instructor giving directions :)
  • my partners a very supportive passenger so I told him what I needed and did motorways with him in the car first.
  • go into a supermarket car park out of hours and practice bay parking. The car you have may well be different from the car you learnt in. Soooo much less stressful to figure this out in peace. I always nailed a bay park in instructors car, but when we got a new car it did take me quite a few go s to adjust! See also parallel park - find a quiet road and have a couple of tries!
  • feel the fear and do it anyway. I drove a lot feeling anxious. I just decided that I wasn't going to give up after spending all that money. And it's really useful. I can't say I enjoy driving even now, but I have stopped feeling the lead weight and I'm more confident in my ability.
  • there are a lot of crap drivers on the road worse than you, who don't even worry about it. I find this reassuring, and I just give them a wide berth and try to practice all the stuff about observing and anticipating.

But congrats and do get yourself driving! Even if it feels like nothing and sometimes you don't want to, little and often really helps. Celebrate your wins and reward yourself for getting out x

flossyfloss · 23/08/2017 10:27

I'm 19+4 and still not felt much movement at all, some days I feel a few light kicks which I could still pass off as wind Confusedand other days nothing, this is my 5th and usually at this stage they're starting to get strong enough to be felt from the outside so it is worrying me - I'm strongly suspecting I have anterior placenta! My scan is tomorrow so I will find out!

Still have mild nausea which is driving me mad and heartburn Sad

We have quite a lot of baby clothes now in all sizes and have a car seat, high chair, Moses basket, pram and lots of nappies and wipes Smile enjoying stocking up! I've also changed my car as I had a 4 seater before so now have a nice practical 5 door 5 seat car!

Maybebaby2 · 23/08/2017 10:28

Congratulations on passing decaff we should be out and about driving everywhere shouldn't we! We'll get there, just need to relax into it.

Good luck Elle and peach it is really scary but you have to keep at it. I failed 6 times before my pass but was determined not to give up!

Thanks reet it's really reassuring that I'm not the only one to have gone through this and you given lots of good advice. I'm 37 so a very late driver, it took me 2 full years of lessons because I was so nervous. I actually found I was calmer since being pregnant, I knew I had to focus and just get it done. So I know I'm a good driver its just the fear has come back now that I haven't got my instructor sat next to me. Definitely feel better if I have a particular place to drive to rather than driving for the sake of it. I'm going to dive us to scan appointment on Friday which I'm actually looking forward to 😀

klaw87 · 23/08/2017 10:45

Well done on passing @Maybe and @Decaff!
I passed on my 3rd attempt 9 years ago and I would say I've only really been a confident driver in the last couple of years as I have driven more consistently rather than every now and again - it definitely just comes with experience but just take it slow, don't worry about being slow and annoying other drivers, it's better that you feel safe and give yourself time to make decisions about every manoeuvre than rush it and make it a horrible experience for yourself - you can obviously drive well if you've passed the test, so now it's just practice :)

@flossyfloss you sound like me, I've been buying lots of bits and have been given lots as well which has been amazing! I've been thinking of starting to get nappies and wipes, but with this being my first I find it all so confusing! I don't want to get too much of one size, and equally have no idea what blooming size brand or type to get!

I've got my scan tomorrow - so excited/anxious!!

Disinterested · 23/08/2017 10:47

Congratulations on the ladies who have recently passed their driving test (I myself only passed from an intensive course in June!) And Good luck to those starting up!

I am very very itchy to the point of it waking me up at night, I'm scratching my legs as I type this! Is anybody else experiencing this?

klaw87 · 23/08/2017 11:00

@Disinterested I know that pregnancy can change the skin a bit, make you more sensitive than you would normally be etc, could it be your skin isn't agreeing with a soap or moisturiser you use any more? Must be frustrating! X

Decaffstilltastesweird · 23/08/2017 11:18

disinterested

I've had this a bit, but not as bad as yours sounds. In my case I think it's dry skin.

Read this though, as it may be worth mentioning to a mw or gp:

www.mumsnet.com/pregnancy/itching-in-pregnancy-causes-and-remedies

My friend had cholestasis (sp?) but that was in later pregnancy. Not sure if it happens at our stage or not.

klc75 · 23/08/2017 13:26

Same @klaw87 I know I'm going to wake up then just can't get back to sleep for hours.. if I do I have vivid weird dreams 😫

Disinterested · 23/08/2017 16:22

Thanks for the replies. Think I'm gonna book in at the doctors tomorrow just to get it checked out.. x

Owl1011 · 23/08/2017 16:38

I've just had my first negative public experience! Angry

Standing at the train station platform with hundreds of others after our original service was cancelled. A woman just had a go at me because I stood in front of her in a gap and I actually (shamefully) in pulled the pregnancy card and told her that I don't want people ramming my stomach and pushing me (I don't have a really visible bump yet so it is hard to tell). She then continued to have a right attitude on her and then announced that I was pregnant to the whole (packed) carriage so naturally people got up to give me their seats which I said it's fine don't worry but they insisted. She then started telling the woman next to her I could have waited behind her as there's 'plenty of space'. You should see how rammed this train is now and people are like sardines! SadConfused

hanna87 · 23/08/2017 16:44

Hey @Disinterested could be your soap/moisturiser! But, although a little early for cholestasis(sp) ask the GP to check if ur liver functions are ok as raised levels also cause lots of itching...

Victoriaaaaaaaa · 23/08/2017 16:48

@Owl1011

What a disgusting human being!

Gemxo · 23/08/2017 17:29

Smile & wave @Owl1011 !!

hanna87 · 23/08/2017 17:42

@Owl1011 i had a similar experience last week -though i am quite big now! I got shouted at by a passenger for sitting on a priority seat on the bus because it meant that a lady couldn't have her trolley parked next to her. I politely pointed at the priority label and i got told to go back to my own country :-(
Im of Indian heritage but born n bought up here, pay my taxes n contribute to the economy.
Some people are plain mean

Decaffstilltastesweird · 23/08/2017 18:01

Jesus hanna. That's absolutely disgusting! Poor you. Did nobody defend you? I'm absolutely furious on your behalf!

owl that woman sounds horrible as well. Some people just are Angry.

disinterested, I'm sure it's nothing to worry about, but probably a good idea to double check. Pregnancy seems to do weird stuff to us!

Owl1011 · 23/08/2017 20:03

@hanna87 oh my gosh, it's ridiculous how rude and disgusting people's behaviour can be! I hope you ignored them, didn't move and enjoyed your seat!

@Gemxo @Victoriaaaaaaaa I just can't get over how people can be so rude! Confused

In more pleasant news we've been for a reassurance scan this evening and baby doing well and wiggling away. I don't have an anterior placenta so she said what I'm starting to feel is likely to be movement Grintheir machine wasn't working properly so didn't get a detailed look, have to wait until 20 week scan 6th Sept but makes me very excited!

millsbynight · 23/08/2017 21:14

Wtf! @hanna87 that's so sad, I'm sorry this happened to you. Disgusting behaviour.

Also sorry @Owl1011 Where in the UK are you? Do you have access to a Baby On Board badge like they give women in London?

I was wearing my Baby on Board badge the other day and STILL no one offered me a seat on a full bus. I didn't have the strength to ask anyone to move as I was only going a few stops but I was still annoyed Angry

Dreading going back to work in a week when I'll be commuting in rush hour. Hopefully my bump will really start to show so will be more obvious.

OP posts:
reetgood · 23/08/2017 21:38

@hanna87 I'm sorry you had that experience. Not ok.

For you commuters, how far gone in weeks are you? I am almost 21 weeks and I swear in the past day I just went pop...

millsbynight · 23/08/2017 21:48

@reetgood I'm 21+3. Here is a bump pic from 21+0!

Getting there...

I bought some lovely maternity work trousers from Debenhams and they are super comfy for my commute and the office Smile

reetgood · 23/08/2017 21:58

I am much more popped than you @millsbynight! Will have to get a pic...

rememberpurpleronnie · 23/08/2017 22:10

@reetgood me too- I swear people think I'm about to pop! I would love to have a nice neat bump but suspect that is highly unlikely!!

hanna87 · 23/08/2017 22:14

Yes really quite disgusted at what happened. Everyone watched and stared..I felt so embarrassed..got off a couple of stops early as was paranoid everyone kept looking at me after what happened! Some people are pure ignorant..

Glad that's over though!
